Rat-bite fever is an uncommon disease known for its endemicity to occur worldwide. Although most patients tend to develop mild symptoms with improvement from conventional antibiotics, it can progress with severe complications with a mortality rate as high as 13% without proper treatment. The authors report a complicated case of rat bite-fever involving a 61-year old woman who presented with fever petechial rash, and septic arthritis following a rat bite. Initially, multiple antibiotics were administered but were not effective. As a consequence, invasive procedures such as arthrotomy and joint …

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever is a zoonotic disease that has been described in laboratory personnel as well as the general population.
METHODS … lti-organ system failure 59 days after initial injury.
RESULTS: This is the first reported case of rat-bite fever (RBF) in a pet shop work setting.
CONCLUSIONS: Zoonotic infections may present a significant hazard to workers handling animals. Education on hazards of animal contact and other preventive measures are needed in small places of business like pet sh …

Rat bite fever is a rare but potentially fatal Gram-negative infection that predominantly affects populations with exposure to rats, notably children. The clinical presentation is nonspecific and requires a high threshold of suspicion to elicit a history of rat exposure. We report here a case of a child whose diagnosis was made retrospectively but with good outcome.

We report a case of rat-bite fever in a 94-year-old woman with Streptobacillus notomytis infection. We established an epidemiologic link between exposure to rats and human infection by performing nested PCRs that detected S. notomytis in the intraoral swab specimens obtained from rats captured in the patient's house.

Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a challenging diagnosis transmitted by the bite of the rats. We present the first reported case of RBF complicated by vertebral osteomyelitis. It is important to consider performing the MRI to differentiate vertebral osteomyelitis from simple back pain to determine the appropriate duration of antibiotic therapy.

A 5-year-old girl was admitted to hospital with fever, headache and nausea. Her C-reactive protein raised from less than 11 mg/l to 65 mg/l and she developed a maculopapular, petechial rash, especially pronounced on the soles and palms. After incubation for 3 days, Streptobacillus moniliformis was found in all blood cultures that had been taken. Some weeks before her admission, the girl had been playing with her grandmother's pet rats, which later had died from an unknown disease. There was no history of rat bite. Her condition improved rapidly after treatment with penicillin and chloramphenic

Of the two postmortem examinations on rat-bite fever previously reported, the patient of Miura and Toriyama, a woman, aged 32 years, died on the 70th day after the onset of the disease. Anatomically there were no marked changes. Histological examinations were not made. Macroscopically, the following findings are reported: increase of cerebrospinal fluid, hyperemia of the meninges, inflammatory edema of the lungs, cloudy swelling of the liver, etc. The other, Blake's case, was a woman of 67, who died 1 month after the bite of a rat. The anatomical findings were acute ulcerative endocarditis, su…

The authors report the case of a 45-year-old male with history of human immunodeficiency virus who presented unresponsive and with injuries to his hands after spending a night on a lakeside beach. During his hospitalization, he developed a fever with arthralgias and was initially thought to have calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease before a diagnosis of Rat Bite Fever was ultimately discovered. He was successfully treated with six-weeks of ceftriaxone. The authors discuss the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of Rat Bite Fever.

Rat-bite fever is a rare zoonotic infection caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus, which is characterised by fever, rash and arthritis. The arthritis has previously been described as non-suppurative and isolation of the organism from synovial fluid as very uncommon. This article reports a case of septic arthritis diagnosed as rat-bite fever when the organism was cultured from synovial fluid and reviews another 15 cases of S. moniliformis septic arthritis reported in the worldwide literature since 1985. Articles were included in this review if S. moniliformis was cultured fr…
