Rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titers were periodically examined during and after treatment in three rabbits clinically diagnosed with rabbit syphilis. RPR titers remained positive after clinical recovery and then gradually declined. Of the two rabbits inoculated experimentally, one showed clinical signs of the disease, while the other did not. A method of utilizing morphological changes in rat mast cells to determine reaginic antibody activity in bovine serum is described. The interrelationships of anaphylactic bronchoconstriction, active cutaneous anaphylaxis and circulating reaginic antibody level in rats sensitized with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis have been studied. The rapid plasma reagin (RPR) circle card and the Venereal Disease Reference Laboratory (VDRL) slide test results were compared on a group of sera known to show biological false positive (BFP) reactions to reagin detection tests for syphilis. The RPR test was more specific than the VDRL test on the sera selected, ie, it gave fewer false positive results than the VDRL test. However, in a group of presumed normal sera, the RPR test gave BFP reactions while the VDRL test gave none. The RPR test gave fewer BFP reactions than the VDRL test in 269 sera from patients with lepromatous leprosy.

An exceptionally rare case of spontaneous allergic sensitization to a glycoprotein rich in sialic acid and present in human seminal fluid is described in a woman. An anaphylactic reaction, consisting of giant urticaria, oedema, asthma, uterine pain and cardiovascular collapse followed within minutes of coitus. A high degree of atopic hypersensitivity was shown by skin reactions to human seminal fluid, but not to that of animal origin. Passive transfer of the hypersensitivity to man and monkey was successful and the responsible antibody was shown to be reagin-like and associated with the group

The analytical performance of the AIX1000 system, a fully automated and recently FDA-cleared rapid plasma reagin (RPR) system, was evaluated by comparison to a manual RPR test in a traditional syphilis testing algorithm. A total of 1,028 consecutive serum samples submitted for syphilis testing to the University of North Carolina Hospitals Clinical Immunology Laboratory were tested per each manufacturer's instructions.
