Agmatine disrupts prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle reflex in rats.

Agmatine is a guanidine-amine formed by the enzymatic decarboxylation of arginine. Agmatine has been proposed to be a neuromodulator and its downstream derivatives, the polyamines, have been suggested to be responsible for sensory gating deficits seen in schizophrenia. In this study, male Wistar rats underwent treatments with agmatine, vehicle or other agents known to alter sensory gating in an experimental paradigm of prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response. Apomorphine (1 mg/kg s.c.), a nonselective dopamine agonist known to disrupt PPI responses, was injected as the posit

Wideband reflectance measures of the ipsilateral acoustic stapedius reflex threshold.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for acoustically measuring the ipsilateral acoustic stapedius reflex threshold by using wideband shifts in energy reflectance and admittance. DESIGN: A group of 27 young adult subjects with normal hearing participated in the study. Contralateral reflex thresholds were first measured for a 4000 Hz activator tone (maximum level, 92 dB SPL), using a clinical method with a 226 Hz probe tone. Ipsilateral and contralateral reflex thresholds were then measured by using an experimental wideband reflectance and admittance system that used a

The reversed ipsilateral acoustic reflex: clinical features and kinetic analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The reversed ipsilateral acoustic reflex (RIAR) has been the subject of few studies in the past literature and the nature of this "reflex" response is not yet completely understood. It can be observed in different diseases, all of which result from inactivity of the stapedial reflex (SR). We aimed to investigate the occurrence of the RIAR in different diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An extensive clinical investigation of the RIAR was carried out. RESULTS: The RIAR was found to be present in 100% of ears lacking an effective SR arc. Its amplitude is modulated by the air pressure le

Visual Modulation of Acoustic Reflex Measurements: Insights Into Sensory Integration.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the impact of visual tasks on acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and AR latencies (ARLs) during AR measurements. METHODS: A total of 31 participants (17 female, 14 male; mean age: 20.3 ± 1.8 years) with normal hearing and Type A tympanograms were included. ARTs and latencies were measured using a 226 Hz probe tone under five distinct conditions: (1) resting with no visual task, (2) eyes comfortably closed, (3) fixed gaze on a stationary object, (4) saccadic eye movements, and (5) optokinetic eye movements. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA w

Acoustic-reflex responses in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

PURPOSE: Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) are especially susceptible to microangiopathic complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Microangiopathic changes are also the most important findings in histopathologic studies of the inner ear and central nervous systems in diabetic subjects. No previous studies have measured acoustic-reflex latencies (ARL) or amplitudes (ARA) in patients with IDDM. ARL and ARA reflect the function of the acoustic-reflex arch. Furthermore, possible changes in the tympanic membrane, ossicular chain, and stapedius muscle ma

Acoustic reflex abnormalities in behaviorally disturbed and language delayed children.

Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were measured in 62 subjects referred for suspected delays in development of language, learning disabilities, or disorders of auditory processing, with normal peripheral hearing thresholds and normal tympanometry. Thirty-two percent of the subjects in this study showed abnormal contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds. Both contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were involved when subjects showed abnormal reflex thresholds. Although a high percentage of abnormal acoustic reflexes occurred in this populat

The relationship between acoustic reflex threshold and air-bone gap.

Neither air-bone gap nor acoustic reflex presence/absence gives an unequivocal indication of abnormality in middle-ear sound transmission. In the present study, a stratified population sample was investigated to examine the interrelationships between these and other parameters of middle-ear status. Of a total of 1725 ears, 1450 had both normal acoustic reflex threshold (ART less than or equal to 100 dB; see text) and air-bone gap (ABG less than or equal to 15 dB); 70 had both abnormal ART and ABG; 160 had abnormal ART but normal ABG; 45 had abnormal ABG but normal ART. Examination of data on t

Acoustic-reflex activity and behavioral thresholds following exposure to noise.

The relationships between properties of the acoustic reflex and temporary threshold shift (TTS) were examined in eight subjects exposed to a 95 dB SPL, 1.0-kHz octave-band noise for 4 h. The specific pattern of TTS obtained from this exposure was consistent with the expected sensitivity changes along the cochlear partition. Maximum decrease in behavioral thresholds was noted at 1.4 kHz with significant TTS also occurring at 2.0 and 4.0 kHz. Behavioral threshold at 0.5 kHz, one octave below the center frequency of exposure, was not affected. Significant reflex threshold shift (RTS) occurred at

Acoustic reflex amplitude. II. Effect of age-related auditory dysfunction.

Crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex amplitude was measured in 99 adult subjects. Minor middle ear dysfunction profoundly influenced acoustic reflex amplitude. Reflex amplitude in subjects with minor impedance abnormality was, on the average, decreased by 68% in comparison to a matched control group. There was a complex relationship among age, sensorineural hearing loss, signal bandwidth and acoustic reflex amplitude. Sensorineural hearing loss differentially influenced acoustic reflex amplitude for young versus older subjects.

Collapsing ears and acoustic reflex measurement with circumaural ear cushions.

Ears that collapse from audiometer ear cushion pressure may show elevated stapedial reflex thresholds. In such cases, erroneous judgments about the status of a patient's hearing are possible. Experiments on 15 normal ears suggest that the use of a circumaural ear cushion on the impedance audiometer headset is an effective method of eliminating outer ear closure and the resulting spurious thresholds, when the proper correction values by frequency are applied to the audiometer dial reading. In this study, correction values for reflex-eliciting stimuli are established and their use in a child wit

Use of TEOAE, ABR, and Acoustic Reflex Measures to Assess Auditory Function Patients With Acoustic Neuroma.

Cochlear and neural auditory function for a series of 30 patients with acoustic neuroma was assessed pre- and postoperatively by transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), auditory brain stem response (ABR), and acoustic reflex measures. Employing a retrosigmoid surgical approach, physical integrity of the acoustic nerve was preserved for 22 patients. TEOAEs were observed preoperatively for 13 patients and postoperatively for 6 of them. Postoperative neural function remained unchanged or improved following surgery for 7 patients, and cochlear function decreased. TEOAE, ABR, and acoustic

Universal automated classification of the acoustic startle reflex using machine learning.

The startle reflex (SR), a robust, motor response elicited by an intense auditory, visual, or somatosensory stimulus has been widely used as a tool to assess psychophysiology in humans and animals for almost a century in diverse fields such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Previously, SR waveforms have been ignored, or assessed with basic statistical techniques and/or simple template matching paradigms. This has led to considerable variability in SR studies from different laboratories, and species. In an effort to standardize SR assessment methods, we developed a

Tactile, acoustic and vestibular systems sum to elicit the startle reflex.

The startle reflex is elicited by intense tactile, acoustic or vestibular stimuli. Fast mechanoreceptors in each modality can respond to skin or head displacement. In each modality, stimulation of cranial nerves or primary sensory nuclei evokes startle-like responses. The most sensitive sites in rats are found in the ventral spinal trigeminal pathway, corresponding to inputs from the dorsal face. Cross-modal summation is stronger than intramodal temporal summation, suggesting that the convergence of acoustic, vestibular and tactile information is important for eliciting startle. This summation

Acoustic reflex threshold and loudness in patients with unilateral hearing losses.

The relationship between the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) and loudness was examined in patients with unilateral hearing losses and subjects with simulated hearing losses using a masking method. Significant differences in the ART between the two ears of patients with unilateral hearing losses were correlated with differences in loudness at the level of the ART with differences in loudness determined by the alternate binaural loudness balance test. A similar relationship of ART and the sensation of loudness was also observed in ears with simulated hearing losses. The results obtained in the p

Acoustic reflex measures at high probe frequency: a phasor diagram approach.

Acoustic reflex measures at high probe frequencies (above 660 Hz) have not been extensively reported in the published literature. Studies of the acoustic reflex at low probe frequencies conflict as to the effect of the reflex on resistance, although all researchers agree that the reflex increases the amount of negative reactance (stiffness). These differences may reflect methodological differences across studies. Lutman and his associates (Lutman and Martin 1979; Lutman et al., 1984) have used phasor diagrams to provide evidence for the effect of the reflex being on reactance, with constant re

Acoustic middle ear muscle reflex protection against magnetic coil impulse noise.

Electromagnetic stimulation (EMS) of the brain and the intracranial portion of the facial nerve has become a widely used clinical technique. The high intensity impulse noise acoustic artifact generated by some magnetic coils used in EMS has been shown to cause severe cochlear damage in experimental animals. This damage results in permanent threshold shifts throughout the auditory spectrum of the rabbit. As with other impulse and impact noise signals, the duration of the coil impulse noise is too short to be influenced by the normally protective acoustic middle ear muscle reflex. Artificially a

Defining the relationship between cochlear hearing loss and acoustic reflex thresholds.

In this study several methods of defining the relationship between the magnitude of cochlear hearing loss and the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) levels were examined, with a view to defining the appropriate upper limits of ART that would ease clinical applicability and reduce the false positive rate. The 90th percentile, two standard deviations (SD) from the mean, the regression method and an empirical method based on the scatter plots of the ART at each activator frequency were all applied to the results of 99 patients with cochlear and/or peripheral vestibular pathology. The upper limits of
