Perception Toward Wolves Are Driven by Economic Status and Religion Across Their Distribution Range.

Effective conservation of large mammals depends on how people perceive them. Grey wolves have a widespread distribution globally, and their … nts from low-income countries elicited the most negative perceptions. We identified the predominant religion and economic status of a country as dominant factors determining perception. Studies conducted in countries with Hinduism as the predominant religion reported a negative perception toward wolves. We recommend that future studies on human-wolf intera …

Whole-body donation through the lens of Shona culture and Christian religion in Zimbabwe.

Voluntary donation is the ethically acceptable method for whole-body acquisition for anatomy education worldwide. In Africa, educational institutions struggle with this since many people remain unwilling to donate their bodies due to the strong influence of cultural and religious beliefs in decision-making. As part of wider efforts to improve the ethical sourcing of bodies in Zimbabwean medical schools, which are heavily reliant on unclaimed bodies, this study sought to determine the influences traditional and religious beliefs have on such decisions. We ascertained traditional and religious l

The Impact of Religion and Spirituality on Suicide Risk in Veterans and Refugees With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

It has been suggested that religion and spirituality have a protective impact on suicide risk in populations living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This review sought to examine the association between suicide risk among veterans and refugees with PTSD and religion or spirituality as a modifying factor. Two databases, PubMed and Embase, were searched and 10 publications were identified and included. Seven publications found that religion or spirituality was associated with lower suicide risk. The findings in this study suggest that religion and spirituality contain social as well as…

Global Scientific Outputs of Brain Death Publications and Evaluation According to the Religions of Countries.

In 1950s, the concept of brain death, which began to be discussed primarily in terms of medicine and then in terms of religion, law, and ethics, became a central topic in all world countries as it was an early diagnosis of death. Despite the fact that brain death (BD) diagnosis is of importance for benefitting from organ and tissue transplantation of patients in the world, the literature still involves no bibliometric studies that made a holistic evaluation of the publications about this issue. The present study aims to investigate the top-cited articles about BD published between 1980 and 201…

Multidimensional assessment of spirituality/religion in patients with HIV: conceptual framework and empirical refinement.

A decade ago, an expert panel developed a framework for measuring spirituality/religion in health research (Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality), but empirical testing of this framework has been limited. The purpose of this study was to determine whether responses to items across multiple measures assessing spirituality/religion by 450 patients with HIV replicate this model. We hypothesized a six-factor model underlying a collective of 56 items, but results of confirmatory factor analyses suggested eight dimensions: Meaning/Peace, Tangible Connection to the Divine, Pos…

Between universal feminism and particular nationalism: politics, religion and gender (in)equality in Israel.

This article argues that one of the many "idiosyncrasies" of the Israeli case, namely Israel's continuing, violent conflict with its Arab neighbours, is of highly influential relevance to the issue of gender relations. Viewed by many Israeli Jews as a struggle for the very existence of the Jewish state, the Arab-Israeli conflict has overshadowed most other civil and social issues, rendering them "secondary" to the primary concern of securing the safe existence of the state. This has pushed such pressing issues as gender equality and women's rights aside, thus allowing for the perpetuation of d

Carer Perspectives on the Influence of Spirituality, Religion and Culture on the Mental Health of African Australians.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health experiences among African Australians are influenced by cultural beliefs, spirituality, religion and caregiving expectations. This study explored carers' perspectives on how these factors shape mental health experiences and caregiving practices. METHODS: Guided by Leininger's transcultural nursing framework, a descriptive phenomenological design using Colaizzi's method was employed. Ten African Australian carers, recruited through purposive and snowball sampling, participated in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Two themes emerged: (a) cultural and social influ…

Thinking with Crocodiles: An Iconic Animal at the Intersection of Early-Modern Religion and Natural Philosophy.

This paper seeks to explore how culturally and religiously significant animals could shape discourses in which they were deployed, taking the crocodile as its case study. Beginning with the textual and visual traditions linking the crocodile with Africa and the Middle East, I read sixteenth- and seventeenth-century travel narratives categorizing American reptiles as "crocodiles" rather than "alligators," as attempts to mitigate the disruptive strangeness of the Americas. The second section draws on Ann Blair's study of "Mosaic Philosophy" to examine scholarly debates over the taxonomic identit

This paper investigates the procedure for determining the new Hijri Month between Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. It endeavours to understand the reason for dissimilarity in terms of practice between these four nations in commencing Hijri Month of Ramadan, Shawal, and Zulhijjah despite sharing the same lunar crescent visibility criterion. This study is conducted through the examination of literature with regards to regulations of the lunar crescent visibility criterion between these countries. The study finds out that the determination of the Hijri months, particularly Ramadan, Sha

Religion and HIV Sexual Risk Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in China.

BACKGROUND: Religion can profoundly impact the sociocultural contexts that shape sexual HIV vulnerability among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, the relationship between religion and HIV vulnerability remains poorly understood for MSM in China, where religious affiliations and practices are rapidly increasing. METHODS: Using cross-sectional survey data collected in Beijing and Tianjin, China, from 2013 to 2014 (n = 400), this study tests 3 hypotheses regarding religion and HIV sexual risk: (1) HIV vulnerabilities and testing patterns among religiously affiliated MSM are lower than fo…

Religion and physical health among older Israeli Jews: findings from the SHARE-Israel study.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of research on religious determinants of health, this subject has not been systematically investigated within Jewish populations, in Israel or the diaspora. The present paper is part of a series of studies using large-scale population data sources to map the impact of religiousness on the physical and mental health of Jews. OBJECTIVES: To identify religious predictors of physical health in a national probability sample of older Israeli Jews. METHODS: The data derive from the Israeli sample of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), a cross-n

Self-rated importance of religion predicts one-year outcome of patients with panic disorder.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication are efficacious treatments for panic disorder, but individual attributes such as coping and motivation are important determinants of treatment response. A sample of 56 patients with panic disorder, treated with group cognitive-behavioral therapy, were reassessed 6 months and 12 months after initial assessment. We studied the effect of self-rated importance of religion, perceived stress, self-esteem, mastery, and interpersonal alienation on outcome as measured by the General Severity Index of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI.GSI). Importance of religi…

Peace From on High? How Religion Moderates the Stress of Higher Status American Workers.

Building on the stress process model, this study examines whether religiosity moderates the mental health consequences of higher-status work among American workers. Drawing on the stress of higher status (SHS) framework and job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, we analyze data from the 2023 Measuring Employment Sentiments and Social Inequality survey (MESSI; N = 1744), a nationally representative survey of American workers. We focus on three work-related stressors central to the stress of higher status-job authority, long work hours, and work-family conflict-and three dimensions of religion/spi…

Religion and Public Health: Intersecting Beliefs and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care Practices in Kashmir.

This qualitative study investigates how local Islamic belief systems shape the lived experiences of stigma, disclosure, and treatment seeking among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) in Kashmir. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 15 PLHIV and four Muslim religious scholars at a major antiretroviral therapy center, and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, the study reveals that religious values deeply inform individuals' emotional struggles and choices around care. The findings call for culturally grounded, faith-sensitive public health strategies that

Relationship between religion and redress relief among Japanese American World War II incarceration survivors.

Soon after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II, more than 110,000 Japanese Americans (two-thirds U.S. citizens) were rounded up and ordered into desolate incarceration (internment) camps based only on their ethnic heritage. More than 40 years later, the U.S. government acknowledged that the Japanese American incarceration was unjustified and provided a formal apology and monetary award to surviving incarcerees. The present study investigates the relationship between religious affiliation (Buddhist and Christian) and subsequent perceptions of relief associated

The Melbourne colorectal cancer study: incidence findings by age, sex, site, migrants and religion.

During a 12-month period, age, sex, site, country of birth and religion data were obtained on all new cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Melbourne (population 2.8 million) yielding 1150 cases, this being the incidence study arm of a large-scale epidemiological and clinico-pathological investigation of CRC in Melbourne. The age, sex, site and subsite findings had, as expected, the characteristics of a high-risk population for CRC. Unexpectedly, rectal cancer rates were some of the highest recorded in the world. Incidence was greater in males than in females except for colon cancer between ages…

Religion and suicide in Hungary: uncovering regional patterns and the protective effect of Catholicism (2000-2022).

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a critical public health issue in Hungary, a country with historically high suicide rates. This study investigates the relationship between regional religious affiliation and suicide mortality from 2000 to 2022, shedding light on the influence of social and cultural factors in suicide prevention. METHODS: Data were sourced from the national population register and the three most recent censuses. We applied quantile and gamma regressions to explore the associations between age-standardised suicide rates and the age-standardised incidence rates of religious affiliati

Lived religion and gendered environmental governance: ecofeminism and indigenous cosmology in the Kajang community, Indonesia.

This article examines how lived religion, indigenous cosmology, and gendered moral practice shape environmental governance within the Kajang indigenous community of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork with 27 participants and secondary ecological data, the study demonstrates that ecological sustainability is sustained not through formal institutional regulation but through culturally embedded systems of lived religion and collective moral obligation. Central to this system is the cosmological concept of anrongta, which positions nature as a sacred maternal entity requir…
