Correlation of clinical improvement with pontine lesions in opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome.

In a case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis displaying opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome, magnetic resonance images (MRI) disclosed pontine lesions involving part of the pontine paramedian reticular formation and the raphe nucleus. Shrinkage of the lesions correlated with the patient's clinical state. This observation supports the hypothesis that a pontine lesion can cause opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome.

Medullary nuclear dysplasia (Möbius syndrome) in an infant with recurrent apnea and isoelectric EEG.

From birth, an infant girl had repeated episodes of loss of consciousness, apnea and bradycardia, aphonia, and severe pharyngeal-esophageal discoordination. These functional deficits correlated with a gross and microscopic malformation of the medulla oblongata, which is characterized by profound deficits of motor and sensory nuclei and of the reticular formation. We have classified this as an example of Möbius syndrome. No etiology was suggested from the history. Histopathologic findings are compatible with an early massive insult to developing structures in the tegmentum of the medulla oblong…

[Progressive spinal muscular atrophy of proximal location in adults].

The authors report two cases of familial progressive muscular atrophy of proximal localization, with late onset of signs which was associated with involvement of the motor nucleus of trigeminal nerve and hypoglossus nerve nucleus as well as with presence of gynaecomastia. Cases of coexistence of gynaecomastia with spinal muscular atrophy are rare in the literature and the present report may serve for explanation whether the association of these signs is accidental or whether it is a separate nosological entity.

Parallel descending dopaminergic connectivity of A13 cells to the brainstem locomotor centers.

The mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) is an important integrative area for the initiation and modulation of locomotion. Recently it has b … the dorsolateral striatum was observed. On the other hand, DAergic A13 projections to the medullary reticular formation (MRF) and the lumbar spinal cord were sparse. A small number of non-DAergic neurons within the medial ZI projected to the lumbar spinal cord. We then characterized the DA A13 cells and report that these cells differ from canonical DA neurons since t …

In addition, partial tearing was observed in the middle portion of the right lower ventral ARAS. Carotid chemoreceptors tune breathing via multipath routing: reticular chain and loop operations supported by parallel spike train correlations.

We tested the hypothesis that carotid chemoreceptors tune breathing through parallel circuit paths that target distinct elements of an inspiratory neuron chain in the ventral respiratory column (VRC). Microelectrode arrays were used to monitor neuronal spike trains simultaneously in the VRC, peri-nucleus tractus solitarius (p-NTS)-medial medulla, the dorsal parafacial region of the lateral tegmental field (FTL-pF), and medullary raphe nuclei together with phrenic nerve activity during selective stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors or transient hypoxia in 19 decerebrate, neuromuscularly blocke

[Various mechanisms of neural regulation of the excretory and secretory functions of the stomach].

Activation of the brainstem RF with small doses of aminasine increases the gastric secretory and excretory functions in dogs. Changes in these functions following bilateral vago-and splanchnicotomy suggest the gastric vagal nerves to be related both to the secretory and excretory functions. The vagal and celiac nerves are supposed to alter the permeability of the gastric glands as well.

Unilateral left paramedian infarction of thalamus and midbrain: a clinico-pathological study.

In a patient with a unilateral embolic infarct in the left posterior thalamo-subthalamic paramedian artery territory, neuropathological studies showed involvement of the intralaminar, dorsomedial, and internal part of the ventral posterior nuclei of the thalamus, of the rostral part of the mesencephalic reticular formation, and of the posterior commissure. The patient showed upgaze palsy for voluntary saccades, smooth pursuit and vestibulo-ocular movements, sustained downgaze, right-sided motor hemineglect and facio-brachial hypaesthesia, motor transcortical aphasia and anterograde amnesia. Effects of drugs on the electrical activity of the brain: anesthetics.

The major concepts presented in this review can be summarized as follows: 1. There is a multidirectional continuum of anesthetic states--some represented by CNS excitation and others by depression. 2. The reticular activating system is influenced by all anesthetics; some inhibit its action (stage III) and some hyperexcite the system resulting in a function disorganization (stage II-C). 3. Some agents traverse both excitation and depression, diethyl ether (I, II, III). 4. Others induce only stage II--catalepsia, e.g. nitrous oxide, ketamine, gamma-hydroxybutyrate, alpha-chloralose, phencyclidin

Functional brain stem circuits for control of nose motion.

Rodents shift their nose from side to side when they actively explore and lateralize odors in the space. This motor action is driven by a pair of muscles, the deflector nasi. We studied the premotor control of this motion. We used replication-competent rabies virus to transsynaptically label inputs to the deflector nasi muscle and find putative premotor labeling throughout the parvocellular, intermediate, and gigantocellular reticular formations, as well as the trigeminal nuclei, pontine reticular formation, midbrain reticular formation, red nucleus, and superior colliculus. Two areas with ext…

Rostral cuneiform nucleus and the defence reaction: Direct and indirect midbrain-medullary 5-HT mechanisms in baroreflex inhibition.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Activation of the defence reaction inhibits the baroreflex response via the intermediate rostro-ventromedial medulla (B3 raphé) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). Our aim was to determine whether and how baroreflex inhibition, induced by the disinhibition of the rostral cuneiform nucleus (part of the defence pathway), involves 5-HT neurons in B3 and 5-HT3 receptors in the NTS. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We performed immunohistochemistry and anatomical experiments to determine whether raphé 5-HT cells expressing Fos were directly targeted by the rostral cuneiform nucleus

[Motion sickness exemplified by seasickness].

The knowledge of seasickness is as old as seafaring itself. In ancient times the Babylonians already reported on this malaise and on possible therapeutical measurements. The Babylonians, the advice of old sailors and modern pharmaceuticals have one thing in common. They have not been able to find a complete cure for motion disease. The interactions of the relevant cerebral structures are so complex that no drug is available which can interrupt this process definitively. The most important preventive measure is to develop strategies which lead to a quicker adaptation to movement.

Role of autonomic, nociceptive, and limbic brainstem nuclei in core autism features.

Although multiple theories have speculated about the brainstem reticular formation's involvement in autistic behaviors, the in vivo imaging of brainstem nuclei needed to test these theories has proven technologically challenging. Using methods to improve brainstem imaging in children, this study set out to elucidate the role of the autonomic, nociceptive, and limbic brainstem nuclei in the autism features of 145 children (74 autistic children, 6.0-10.9 years). Participants completed an assessment of core autism features and diffusion- and T1-weighted imaging optimized to improve brainstem imag…

Large-Scale Mapping of Vocalization-Related Activity in the Functionally Diverse Nuclei in Rat Posterior Brainstem.

The identity and location of vocalization pattern generating (VPG) circuits in mammals is debated. Based on physiological experiments, investigators suggested anterior brainstem circuits in the reticular formation, and anatomic evidence suggested the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the posterior brainstem, or combinations of these sites as the putative mammalian VPG. Additionally, vocalization loudness is a critical factor in acoustic communication. However, many of the underlying neuronal mechanisms are still unknown. Here, we evoked calls by stimulation of the periaqueductal gray in anestheti…
