BACKGROUND: Haematological values derived from local populations are useful in laboratories to improve diagnoses for local patients. In Cameroon, these data are not yet available. Moreover, there is great variation in baseline parameters pertaining to full blood cell count among medical laboratories.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine values for the complete blood cell count of a healthy adult Cameroonian population for use in locally derived ranges in our medical laboratories.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among blood donors attending three blood banks in Yaoundé fro

This study aims to compare the risk of anemia by iron deficiency in mothers and infants of twin and single pregnancy. It concerned 33 couples of twins and 31 control, all 97 being term newborns. At birth, ferritinemia is significantly lower in twins, and reticulocytes count is significantly higher; their mothers have a significantly lower hemoglobin level and higher reticulocytes percentage and count. At 3 and 6 months, hemoglobin level and mean corpuscular hemoglobin are significantly lower in twins, as at 6 months ferritinemia is significantly lower in twins. Iron stocks constituted in utero

Clinical and haematological features in 41 patients with sickle cell-beta0 thalassaemia (Sbeta0 thalassemia) and in 123 age--sex matched controls with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease were compared. Persistence of splenomegaly was more common and fetal loss less common in Sbeta0 thalassemia but other clinical features were similar in the two genotypes. Total haemoglobin, Hb A2, PCV, CCV, and red cell count were significantly higher and MCV, MCH, MCHC, and ISC counts significantly lower in Sbeta0 thalassaemia. Proportional reticulocyte counts were significantly lower in Sbeta0 thalassaemia b

Case 1. The laboratory findings of a hematological analysis of a 53-year-old woman with palpitations and dyspnea revealed the following: red blood cell (RBC) count: 9.4×10(5)/μL with 60.0‰ reticulocytes; Hb: 3.7 g/dL; mean corpuscular volume (MCV): 124.5 fL; white blood cell (WBC) count: 2,800/μL with 10.0% myeloblasts. Case 2. Similarly, a 42-year-old man with dizziness had a RBC count of 1.63×10(6)/μL with 24.0% reticulocytes, an Hb level of 6.0 g/dL, an MCV of 120.2 fL and a WBC count of 3,100/μL with 4.0% myeloblasts. Bone marrow aspirates in both patients confirmed a diagnosis of acute er

OBJECTIVE: To examine erythroferrone (ERFE)-hepcidin iron regulation in premature infants under intensive care at risk of iron metabolic disorders.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort recruited 31 infants with a birth weight of <1500 g hospitalized in a tertiary center. Their hematological status was measured at birth and 2 and 4 weeks of life.
RESULTS: ERFE was positively correlated with the reticulocyte hemoglobin content at 2 (r2 = 0.2374) and 4 weeks (r2 = 0.6005). An assumed negative correlation between ERFE and hepcidin was not determined during the neonatal period. Hepcidin was posit

Introduction The diagnosis of anemia in pregnancy should be early to prevent complications to mother and baby. It should be simple and safe, and therefore feasibility of reticulocyte parameters may prove beneficial in this regard. Newer reticulocyte parameters have not been studied extensively especially in pregnancy. The present study was conducted to evaluate reticulocyte hemoglobin content (Ret-He), immature reticulocyte fraction, and reticulocyte count and to compare them with serum ferritin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) in assessment anemia in preg

Rhesus hemolytic disease of the newborn is rarely found after the implementation of anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis. However, it may lead to cholestasis, elevated liver transaminases, iron overload and late hyporegenerative anemia when it occurs. Etiology of this type of anemia is not defined yet and treatment is controversial. It is typically recognized after two weeks of life which is characterized by low hemoglobin and reticulocyte count. We have reported a case of a neonate with Rh hemolytic disease with late hyporegenerative anemia that was noted at day 18 of life. We treated this anemi

Splenectomy is considered the treatment of choice for patients with "symptomatic" hereditary spherocytosis (HS). Published guidelines offering recommendations for splenectomy in HS categorize patients primarily based on hemoglobin concentration. We performed a retrospective review of 64 children having splenectomy for HS at Children's Medical Center Dallas. On the basis of hemoglobin concentration alone, 16 children (25%) had mild, 38 (59%) moderate, and 10 (16%) severe HS. However, when reticulocyte count was used to categorize disease severity, only 3 patients (5%) having splenectomy would b

Two children with nonspherocytic anaemia and pyruvate kinase deficiency had their diagnosis delayed due to normal initial estimations of enzyme activity. Repeated analyses involving other glycolytic enzymes documented an increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity as a function of high reticulocyte counts. The pyruvate kinase activity showed subnormal values. By simple comparison of both enzyme activities a true pyruvate kinase activity of below 50% was estimated thus rendering the diagnosis of pyruvate kinase deficiency highly probable. Analyses of more than one glycolytic enzyme sho

BACKGROUND: Multiple packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions in very low birth weight (VLBW) prematurity have been suggested to be a risk factor for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) or for chronic lung disease (CLD). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of PRBC transfusions on the outcome of VLBW prematurity.
METHODS: In total, between July 2005 and June 2006, 36 VLBW preterm babies were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit and were randomly allocated to the "restrictive" (n= 19) or "liberal" (n= 17) criteria for PRBC transfusion. Complete blood cou

Blood count is crucial for assessing bone marrow's cell production and differentiation during infections, gaging disease severity, and monitoring therapeutic responses. The profile of blood count in chronic forms of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) has been insufficiently explored. To better understand the changes in hematological cells in different stages of the PCM chronic form, we evaluated the blood count, including immature blood cells in automated equipment, before and during the treatment follow-up of 62 chronic PCM patients. Predominantly male (96.8%) with an average age of 54.3 (standard

A 7-month-old Myanmar boy was admitted with a 3-day history of fever. He was markedly pale and his temperature was 38·2°C. Peripheral blood smear demonstrated Plasmodium vivax infection with spherocytosis and auto-agglutination of red blood cells. Haematocrit was 16% and reticulocyte count 14·9%. Direct and indirect antiglobulin tests were positive. Antibody analysis was positive for auto-antigen I. P. vivax malaria with auto-immune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) was diagnosed. He was treated with chloroquine and primaquine for the P. vivax infection, and oral prednisolone for the AIHA. Because of

Forty-six Nigerian adult sickle cell anaemia patients were investigated, each in sickle cell crisis and steady state. Forty-three patients had vaso-occlusive crisis while three had haemolytic episodes. Investigations included Packed Cell Volume (PVC), Reticulocyte count and Haemoglobin F estimation. PCV was carried out by the microhaematocrit method while the reticulocytes were counted manually. Haemoglobin F was estimated by the Alkali Denaturation Technique. There was significant anaemia (p < 0.05) and reticulocytosis (p < 0.0001) during the period of crisis compared to the steady state. The

High total haemoglobin levels in homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease are a risk factor for painful crises, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, proliferative sickle retinopathy, and the acute chest syndrome. Since lowering the haemoglobin level may ameliorate these features, understanding the determinants of total haemoglobin may be of practical importance. A range of possible determinants including red cell characteristics, reticulocytes, serum iron, transferrin saturation, serum ferritin, alpha thalassaemia status, red cell mass and plasma volume, oxygen affinity, red cell survival, trans
