Iris damage in the area with loop contact can be prevented by lowering the dosage of steroids. An already damaged iris can be saved with phospholine iodide followed by phospholine iodide combined with atropine to immobilize the iris. On a low dose keratic precipitate-like spots will be formed on the pseudophakos, but they will disappear spontaneously. This lens does not tolerate pilocarpine in the first month after surgery. Thirty individuals with the clinical diagnosis of Down's syndrome received ophthalmologic examination periodically over 10 years at a state school for exceptional children. Atkinson has shown that early correction of hypermetropia reduces the incidence of esotropia. If esotropia is reduced by prescribing glasses early, the rate of esotropia-induced amblyopia can be similarly reduced; this would have important economic consequences. PURPOSE: To test the effect of dorzolamide on accommodation or pupillary function.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This double-blind study examined 35 young subjects with normal ophthalmological findings. Before and after the application of two drops dorzolamide in one eye and placebo in the other eye the subjects were examined by pupillography, infrared video-retinoscopy, and subjective near-point determination.

In a population of 212 mentally retarded, retinoscopy could be performed in 342 eyes in 182 patients. Of these, 334 eyes were phakic. Hypermetropia of +5 or more was encountered in 20 eyes (6.0%), while 26 (7.8%) had a myopia of -5 or more. The most striking finding was a high number of severe astigmatism, cylindrical power of -3.25 or more being present in 29 eyes (8.7%). Glasses were initially prescribed to 88 patients. Six months after the prescription, 59.1% used their glasses regularly. Aspects of glass prescription to mentally retarded are discussed in the paper.

Hong Kong Chinese infants were refracted by retinoscopy at regular intervals between the age of approximately 10 and 40 weeks. Cyclopentolate 1% was used to obtain cycloplegia. A comparative study of the cycloplegic effect of 1% cyclopentolate and atropine or homatropine was done by means of Lindner's method of retinoscopy. In 53% of 1.5- to 6-year-old strabismic patients the hypermetropic refraction was higher (average 0.6 dpt) under the use of atropine, and in 27% of 6- to 11-year-old children cyclopentolate was more effective than homatropine (average 0.5 dpt). Using retinoscopy, we measured the refractive state of 96 eyes of three different strains of rats: albino Sprague-Dawley, Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) with and without inherited retinal dystrophy, and lean and obese varieties of Zucker rats.
