Bacteremia due to Weeksella virosa in a pediatric patient with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Weeksella virosa is one of the two species of the genus Weeksella. Clinical disease due to this bacterium in humans is rare, for which only nine cases have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a left orbit rhabdomyosarcoma Stage III and was admitted to a northeast third level referral center in Mexico. Aerobic, non-pigmented, Gram-negative rod was isolated from a blood culture. W. virosa was identified by Sensititre™ ARIS. This organism has been described in cases of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, sepsis, pneumonia, ventric

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of breast, pleura, and retroperitoneum diagnosed from pleural fluid cytology.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is a malignant small blue round cell tumor which is commonly seen in head and neck region. Breast and pleural involvement are uncommon. Rhabdomyosarcoma has been rarely reported in the body fluids like ascitic, pleural, and cerebrospinal fluid. In this article, we report an interesting case of ERMS which had deceptive small blue round cells in pleural fluid. The cytomorphological features along with a panel of immunocytochemical markers helped in arriving at the definite diagnosis. Later, biopsy from the breast lump and retroperitoneal mass also revealed the s

DICER1-Related Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Uterine Corpus in a Prepubertal Girl.

BACKGROUND: Germline DICER1 mutations increase the risk of developing a wide variety of generally uncommon tumors. We describe a case of DICER1-related embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the uterine corpus in a prepubertal girl. CASE: A 10-year-old- girl with a history of cystic nephroma presented with a 3-week history of vaginal bleeding. A 3-cm mass filling the uterine cavity was detected, and histopathologic examination of hysteroscopy-guided biopsy samples revealed ERMS. Molecular genetic sequencing of the tumor sample revealed a DICER1 mutation. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: This report hig

Botryoid-type of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of renal pelvis in a young woman.

A 22-year-old woman presented with three weeks history of intermittent left loin pain, on radiological evaluation by U\S and MRI revealed left renal pelvic mass, ureterorenoscopy and biopsy taken, but couldn't reveal definitive diagnosis other than presence of a malignant process. Left nephroureterctomy was performed. Grossly there is a polypoid mass attached to the upper pole of the kidney by stalk. Light microscopic examination and immunohistochemical staining confirm a diagnosis of Botryoid-type of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Treatment and follow up to 1 year is mentioned. Reviewing the lit

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and nephrotic syndrome in a child with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

A case of nephrotic syndrome (NS) and acute renal failure (ARF) associated with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in a 10-year-old boy is reported. Ultrasound revealed irregular, echogenic, circumferential urinary bladder base mass, bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis. Histopathology of percutaneous renal and urethrocystoscopic biopsy specimens, respectively, revealed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and embryonal RMS. Tumour remission was induced with pulse doses of intravenous vincristine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and actinomycin D over a 15-month period. He has been follo

Teratoma in an adolescent with malignant transformation into embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: case report.

BACKGROUND: The somatic type tumors are occasionally found in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors in men. These malignancies are presumed to arise from malignant transformation (MT) of teratoma or by differentiation of totipotential germ cell. OBSERVATION: A case of MT of germ cell tumor in 17-year-old male into embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is described. The histopathologic diagnosis was that of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in which no germ cell elements were found. The germ cell origin of transformed histology is supported by cytogenetic analysis (isochromosome 12p), and elevated alpha(1)-fetoprote

Lactoferrin inhibits enterovirus 71 infection of human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma cells in vitro.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71), the newest member of Enterovirudae, is notable for its etiological role in epidemics of severe neurological diseases in children. It appears to be emerging as an important virulent neurotropic enterovirus in the upcoming era of poliomyelitis eradication, whereas no effective vaccine or antiviral agents are available at this moment. Human and bovine lactoferrins, iron-binding proteins belonging to the nonimmune defense system, were assayed in vitro to assess their inhibiting capacity on the cytopathic effect of EV71 on human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells. Both bov

Costello syndrome: report of six patients including one with an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

UNLABELLED: Costello syndrome was first described in 1971. Besides papillomata, which were part of the initial description, patients tends to develop benign tumours of ectodermal origin. Aetiology is yet unknown but it is supposed to be the result of a sporadic dominant mutation. We report six patients with typical clinical findings and emphasise the importance of cardiac manifestations and the tendency to develop tumours. One patient developed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, the occurrence of which has been reported twice before in patients with Costello syndrome. CONCLUSION: There might be a

An unusual manifestation of Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome: Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma - A case report.

Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome (HFGS) is a dominantly inherited condition and one of the rarest cases encountered in clinical practice. It might be presented with a wide variety of limb malformations and urogenital defects manifestations. In this report, a unique and novel case of HFGS accompanied with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is described in a two-year-old male. The patient was admitted to the hospital in order to investigate a progressively enlarging mass in the lower abdomen. During hospitalization, oliguria was noted by resident physicians. However, hypospadias and dys

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma masquerading as embryonal subtype: the value of modern molecular diagnostic testing.

A 3-year-old child presented with a history of conjunctivitis in her OS. She had hyperglobus of the OS and a palpable mass in the left inferior orbit. An urgent MRI revealed an enhancing mass in the left orbit. The patient underwent an incisional biopsy with pathologic assessment most consistent with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. However, subsequent molecular genetic testing of the biopsy specimen was positive for the PAX3/PAX7-FKHR chimeric gene, indicating the tumor was actually an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient received a more intensive chemotherapy regimen and also was treated with p

Custom-designed mouthpiece for HDR brachytherapy of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the soft palate.

This paper describes the design and fabrication of the mouthpiece used for high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy of a cancerous lesion in the soft palate of a pediatric patient. A custom mouth guard made with Thermo-forming material (Clear - Mouthguard) similar to those used by athletes, with a bite section, alveolar sulcus, hard and soft palate sections was made. Markers were placed around the lesion using a color transfer applicator and the impression transferred to the mouthpiece. Ten catheters arranged in a plane were placed on the inferior side (concave part) of the mouthpiece, and held in p

Congenital pineoblastoma and parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma: concurrent two embryonal tumors in a young infant.

BACKGROUND: Pineoblastomas are very rare brain tumors in fetus and neonates, comprising only 0.9% of congenital brain tumors. The occurrence of multiple tumors of different histopathologic types in the same individual is a rare event, most often encountered in hereditary cancer syndromes. CASE REPORT: We report a female fetus presented with a congenital pineoblastoma at the 32nd week of gestation, with hydrocephalus and concurrent parameningeal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in early infancy. RESULTS: Cytogenetic analysis showed normal karyotype in the peripheral blood of the patient, and p53 mu

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcoma botryoides rarely arises in the uterine cervix. It usually presents in the adolescent age group. The peak incidence is in the second decade. A combined modality approach to treating rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) has markedly improved survival. We present two cases of cervical RMS. One of them had a very aggressive clinical course. CASE: Two cases of RMS in young women who presented with rapidly progressive cervical tumor are reported. They were treated with two-stage surgical procedure and chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: A combined modality approach to treating RMS using multidrug ch

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix: case report and review of the literature.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the female genital tract usually occurs during childhood in the vagina. In rare cases, RMS can originate in the uterine cervix, with a peak incidence in the second decade. A combined modality approach to treating RMS using multidrug chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery has markedly improved survival. Early stage embryonal RMS of the cervix has been found to have an excellent prognosis. The present case and literature review indicate that extensive surgery does not improve survival in patients with stage I disease.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the ampulla of Vater with long-term survival following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the biliary tree is a rare cause of biliary tract obstruction in childhood. A 3-year-old child is reported here after presenting with obstructive jaundice secondary to an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the ampulla of Vater. He underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy and irradiation. He is now well and free of disease 5 years following treatment. This child appears to be the first long-term survivor who has required pancreaticoduodenal resection for this lesion.
