OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an association exists between the presence of rheumatoid nodules and thickening of the intima-media and plaque of the carotid artery, which is evidence of atherosclerosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study of 124 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from a University Hospital clinic from 2005 to 2006. We divided the patients into 2 groups, 62 with rheumatoid nodules and 62 without rheumatoid nodules, matched for age and sex. Medical history, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide, rheumatoid factor, and a high …

We report a case of a 73-year-old male with rheumatoid arthritis presenting with acute abdominal and back pain and rapidly developing multio … s, with occasional giant cells and lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate - findings consistent with a rheumatoid nodule. Infective vegetations were overlying the nodule. Due to its relative frequency, a possibility of cardiac involvement by rheumatoid arthritis and its potential infective complications should be considered in patients with appropriate history and cli …

A 67-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis developed recurrent acute onset of stereotyped focal neurological abnormalities. Cerebral imaging showed a mass lesion in the left parieto-occipital lobe. Imaging did not show the time evolution expected in stroke and so he underwent an extensive workup, which was inconclusive. Brain biopsy identified a rheumatoid nodule causing an extensive inflammatory reaction that mimicked a mass. Following treatment with intravenous corticosteroids and rituximab infusions, his clinical condition improved. While rheumatoid meningitis is well recognised, a rheumat…

Here, we present a case report of a woman who presented with a large sacral rheumatoid nodule. This patient failed conservative treatment and presented in search of a surgical solution. We successfully removed her rheumatoid nodule using a surgical approach typically reserved for traumatic coccydynia. We show how coccygectomy, although a rare surgical procedure, was effective in treatment of a large rheumatoid nodule.

Symptomatic cardiac rheumatoid nodules are a rare but recognized manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis. We describe the surgical management of a rheumatic nodule involving the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve.

Pulmonary rheumatoid nodules can be found in over 4% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnostically they have to be differentiated from malignant and infectious processes. The present article describes a case of pulmonary rheumatoid nodule which responded well to Rituximab therapy.

We present a 54-year-old man, a heavy smoker, with clinical and laboratory evidence of familial hypercholesterolemia and an asymptomatic solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) increasing in size on follow-up chest X-ray. Laboratory work-up revealed high titers of rheumatoid factor and the presence of acute phase reactants. Because of the patient's age and history of smoking, open lung biopsy was performed to rule out malignancy. The biopsy showed histological features compatible with a rheumatoid nodule. Identical features were noted in the histological examination of the subcutaneous nodule. Usually…

We describe a patient with a rheumatoid nodule on the mitral valve who developed embolic phenomena from an overlying thrombus. It is important to recognize that thrombus can develop on intracardiac rheumatoid nodules and that these patients may require anticoagulation.

A 44-year-old woman with a long-standing history of classical rheumatoid arthritis had an intra-articular rheumatoid nodule of the knee joint. The history, symptoms, and signs of this case were, however, almost identical to those cases previously reported. This entity has a classic presentation and distinct findings on examination which distinguish it from other intra-articular lesions of the knee.
