[Bickerstaff's encephalitis].

INTRODUCTION: The clinical and radiological findings in a case of Bickerstaff encephalitis are described and the relationship with Miller Fisher and Guillain Barré syndromes are discussed. CLINICAL CASE: Subsequently to a respiratory infection,a 44-year-old male developed external ophthalmoplegia and cerebellar-like ataxia; his condition deteriorated and he suffered consciousness disturbances and absent tendon reflexes were noted. An MRI scan was performed showing a lesion affecting the brainstem. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed albuminocytologic dissociation and the presence of oligoc

후뇌염의 영상 소견 스펙트럼: 임상 화보.

Rhombencephalitis is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by inflammation or infection involving the hindbrain, or rhombencephalon. This syndrome is also clinically diverse, with a wide range of etiologies and varying prognoses. The causes of rhombencephalitis include infections, paraneoplastic syndromes, demyelinating disorders, and autoimmune conditions. Neuroimaging, especially MRI, plays an indispensable role in the diagnosis and topographic evaluation of abnormalities. Bacterial rhombencephalitis, particularly that caused by Listeria monocytogenes, commonly affects the dorsal brainstem …

Lithium-induced subacute diencephalic angio endotheliopathy.

A 65-years-old woman with bipolar affective disorder presented to our ED with a severe lithium intoxication and the recent onset of confusion, clumsiness, and tremors. Symptoms worsened to stupor and anarthria immediately after hospital admission. Gadolinium-enhanced brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed signal hyperintensity involving both thalami in T2weighted (T2w)/Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery sequences (right > left), restricted areas of proton diffusivity at the level of both occipital lobes and a sharp contrast enhancement of thalami, rhombencephalon, and of leptomeninges …

Influenza-B-virus-induced eye and brain malformations during early chick embryogenesis and localization of the viral RNA in specific areas.

Influenza is prevalent worldwide, and the teratogenic effects of influenza infection have been suspected to occur within the developing cent … viral RNA was specifically located in the anterior neural retina, habenular area, mid-thalamus, and rhombencephalon. Our data show that influenza B virus can be a teratogenic agent in neural and nonneural embryonic tissues, raising concern for transplacental infection during early pregnancy.

Stage-specific expression of alkaline phosphatase during neural development in the mouse.

The expression pattern of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) in the developing neural tube of mouse is reported. Homogeneous AP activity in the neuroepithelium becomes prominent at E8.5. At E9.5, distinctly AP-positive cells appear in the brain and spinal cord area. At stages E10.5 to E12.5, AP positivity is observed between the mesencephalon and the rhombencephalon, along the entire spinal cord and cranial nerves emerging from the myelencephalon. At E13.5, strongly AP positive fibers become prominent in the pons. At E14.5, AP expression in brain tissue is considerably reduced and …

Whole-body central processing of lateral line inputs encodes flow direction relative to the center-of-mass.

From shifting visual scenes to tactile deformations and fluid motion, animals interpret patterns of sensory flow around their body to construct internal models and produce adaptive behavior. Understanding how such transformations are encoded in the brain remains incomplete. To tackle this question, we leverage the lateral line of larval zebrafish as a tractable system sensitive to fluid motion and used to steer navigation, feed, and avoid predators. By presenting stimuli of either direction to neuromasts along the body, we mapped hindbrain responses via high-resolution calcium imaging. Our fin

α-Synuclein Pathology Spreads in a Midbrain-Hindbrain Assembloid Model.

Understanding the progression of α-synuclein pathology in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) is a longstanding challenge. Here, a novel midbrain-hindbrain-assembloid model that recapitulates the spread of α-synuclein pathology observed in PD patients, akin to Braak's hypothesis, is presented. Initially, the presence α-synuclein pathology is demonstrated in the hindbrain organoids. Subsequently, sophisticated tissue engineering methods are employed to create midbrain-hindbrain assembloids. These assembloids allow investigation and description of the spreading of α-synuc

Molecular Organization and Patterning of the Medulla Oblongata in Health and Disease.

The medulla oblongata, located in the hindbrain between the pons and the spinal cord, is an important relay center for critical sensory, proprioceptive, and motoric information. It is an evolutionarily highly conserved brain region, both structural and functional, and consists of a multitude of nuclei all involved in different aspects of basic but vital functions. Understanding the functional anatomy and developmental program of this structure can help elucidate potential role(s) of the medulla in neurological disorders. Here, we have described the early molecular patterning of the medulla dur

The Mouse Hindbrain As a Model for Studying Embryonic Neurogenesis.

The mouse embryo forebrain is the most commonly employed system for studying mammalian neurogenesis during development. However, the highly folded forebrain neuroepithelium is not amenable to wholemount analysis to examine organ-wide neurogenesis patterns. Moreover, defining the mechanisms of forebrain neurogenesis is not necessarily predictive of neurogenesis in other parts of the brain; for example, due to the presence of forebrain-specific progenitor subtypes. The mouse hindbrain provides an alternative model for studying embryonic neurogenesis that is amenable to wholemount analysis, as we

Listerial rhombencephalitis in an immunocompetent young adult.

Listeria monocytogenes is a common cause of central nervous system infections, especially in immunosuppressed patients, infants and elderly people. Listerial rhombencephalitis is a rare and severe infection of the brainstem that is reported to have high mortality and frequent serious sequelae for survivors. We report the case of a 19-year-old healthy male who presented with listerial brainstem infection due to Listeria monocytogenes.

Cell proliferation during early hindbrain development in Alligator.

Cell proliferation, as determined by immunoreactivity to proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was investigated during early hindbrain development in Alligator. At the earliest stage examined, stage 3, when five rhombomeres are present, PCNA immunoreactivity is more robust laterally towards the pial margin and interrhombomeric boundaries are clearly seen. Subsequently, PCNA immunoreactivity fills each respective rhombomere and increases in intensity but respects the boundaries between segments until stage 7. At this time, borders between rhombomeres become less distinct. At stage 8, when t

The development of the human brain, including the longitudinal zoning in the diencephalon at stage 15.

Twenty-six embryos (6-11 mm) of stage 15 (approximately 33 days) were studied in detail and graphic reconstructions of three of them were prepared. Characteristic features of this stage include closed lens vesicles, presence of nasal pits, and retinal pigment. The neuromeric pattern is still visible. Each cerebral hemisphere is limited by the torus hemisphericus internally and by the di-telencephalic sulcus externally. The medial (diencephalic) eminence of the basal nuclei (previously misinterpreted by others as the lateral) had appeared in stage 14, and the lateral eminence, which is telencep
