Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) belonging to arboviruses is a major member of zoonotic pathogens. TBEV infection causes severe human encephalitis without specific antiviral drugs. We herein report the case of a 54-year-old male patient with a human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection, usually with low viral loads and CD4 cells < 200-100/mm3 due to thymic exhaustion. He was referred to our clinic because of hypertransaminasemia and cholestasis of a duration of 58 months and liver cirrhosis on FibroScan® without esophageal varices. Nonspecific manifestations included weight loss. Liver disease stigmata and generalized amyotrophy were also present.

Two patients with Lassa fever are described who are the first human cases treated with a combination of ribavirin and favipiravir. Both patients survived but developed transaminitis and had prolonged detectable virus RNA in blood and semen, suggesting that the possibility of sexual transmission of Lassa virus should be considered.

Since its recognition in 1964, La Crosse (LAC) virus has been recognized as an important cause of pediatric encephalitis in the United State … illness while potentially reducing the risk of permanent sequelae. Evidence exists that the use of ribavirin may form the basis of an effective treatment for LAC viral infections. We propose that oral ribavirin may provide a useful treatment to limit the severity and improve the prognosis of those suffering from LAC viral infections.

Ten patients with SSPE were surveyed during the last 4 years from the viewpoint of clinical safety for use of ribavirin therapy. Although effectiveness varied among cases, they were all treated safely with intraventricular ribavirin. This study suggests that treatment is safe and well-tolerated.

Tolerance and antiviral effect of ribavirin was studied in 6 patients with Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF) of more than 8 days of evolution. Administration of ribavirin resulted in a neutralization of viremia and a drop of endogenous interferon titers. The average time of death was delayed. A reversible anemia was the only adverse effect observed. A healthy 24-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with acute hepatitis. She denied traveling, consumption of drugs, herbs … ubinemia and liver cytolysis worsened. At this point, HEV serology and viraemia came back positive. Ribavirin was started with rapid clinical and biochemical improvement. Liver enzymes were normal and HEV viraemia was negative after 12 weeks of ribavirin, remaining undetectable 3 months later.
