A retrospective case-control study was designed to assess risk factors for neonatal infection. Nonprivate patients (8,215) who delivered in a period from January 1, 1983 to June 30, 1988 were studied. Ninety three cases of conjunctivitis (incidence 2.4/1,000), 104 cases of pneumonia (incidence 2.8/1,000), and 50 cases of sepsis (incidence 1.3/1,000) were identified. Group B streptococcus was cultured from septic neonates in 46%. Calculated Odds ratio's indicated prematurity/low birth-weight (OR 6.9) and antepartum fetal tachycardia (OR 6.3) as important risk factors for pneumonia/sepsis. Prema…

Although a relationship has been suggested between abstinence from alcohol and improvement in left ventricular (LV) function, no long-term s … urvival were LVDD, low cardiac output, increasing age, and abnormal wall motion. Therefore: (1) the risk factors in alcoholic and nonalcoholic cardiomyopathy are similar although IMLC appears to be a relatively specific prognostic factor for alcoholic cardiomyopathy and (2) abstinence from alcohol does not appear to improve survival.

In nursing homes, immobility and related complications are major problems with profound health care and financial implications. We conducted a retrospective study to identify risk factors associated with immobility. We compared factors in 34 nonambulatory residents with those in 12 independent ambulatory residents who served as controls. Factors associated with immobility included contractures, severe dementia, poor vision, and history of hip/leg fractures. Factors not associated with immobility included age, osteoarthritis, mild to moderate dementia, weight gain, and broad categories of selec…

With a systematically sampled population of children aged under 5 attending this centre for diarrhoeal disease research during 1983-5 a retrospective analysis of persistent diarrhoea (defined as greater than 14 days' duration) was performed to identify the possible risk factors for this syndrome. Of the 4155 children included in the analysis, 410 (10%) gave a history of persistent diarrhoea. A comparison with children with acute diarrhoea matched for age showed that 11 factors were correlated with persistent diarrhoea, and strongly associated factors were stools with blood or mucus, or both, l…

A study on possible association of maternal factors with undescended testis was undertaken. A comparison was made using mothers of boys with the disease (No. = 108) and mothers of boys without the disease (No. = 108). The boys without the disease were selected from outpatients by individually matching the birth year with the case. A smaller proportion of mothers having babies with the disease experienced vomiting during the index pregnancy (the estimated relative risk RR = 0.51, P = 0.02). A larger proportion of them had delivered by vacuum extractor delivery, cesarean section, or breech extra

In a prospective study 90 patients who had confirmed abruption of the placenta were compared with a control group. Significantly more patients who had abruptio placentae were unmarried, smoked cigarettes, received no antenatal care, had coitus within the 48 hours preceding delivery, developed intrapartum hypertension and had a lower ponderal index than the controls. More patients with abruptio placentae had proteinuria and antepartum hypertension but statistical significance was not reached. In addition, the incidence of intra-uterine growth retardation was higher in these patients.

Risk factors for mental retardation were studied prospectively in 12 000 children born in northern Finland in 1966 and followed to the age of 14 years. The number of untraced children was less than 2 per 1000. Altogether 326 children had an IQ less than 86, and the incidence of severe retardation (IQ less than 50) was especially high. An incidence figure for children with mental retardation, a separate figure for healthy children, and also the death rate were calculated for each disease. Only in the cases of Down's syndrome and some hereditary diseases were all the exposed children mentally re…

In a retrospective study of 277 adult patients consecutively hospitalized for burns over a five-year period (1975-1979) patients' characteristics, circumstances of burn injury and prevalence of established predisposing factors were determined. The average age was 44.5 years, 78% were black and 62% were men. Average extent of burn was 19.7% body surface area. Major causes included flames in 44.8%, scalds in 28.5%, and chemicals in 9.7%. Seventy-four percent of all burns occurred at home. Burns resulting from assault accounted for 20.9%. Fifty-six percent of the patients had one or more of the e

Fifty-eight women with postmenopausal osteoporosis (crush fracture of the spine) were compared with 58 age-matched normal women. The osteoporotic women had lower total-body calcium levels and bone mineral content of the radius, had undergone an earlier menopause, smoked cigarettes more, and had breast-fed less often. They also had lower levels of estrone, estradiol, and testosterone and reduced levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. These findings suggest the presence of changeable risk factors for the development of osteoporosis. Smoking should b…

Since 1976, data were collected to evaluate risk factors for breast cancer in a hospital-based case-control study of 1185 women with breast cancer and 3227 controls. The risk of breast cancer increased with increasing age at first birth; this effect was not accounted for by parity. An early age at first birth appeared to reduce the risk relative to no pregnancy, whereas a late age at first birth was associated with a higher risk than not having a full-term pregnancy. High parity was associated with a reduction in the risk that was independent of that of age at first birth: for parity greater t…

Besides oxygen administration and immaturity of the premature retinal vessels, there are other risk factors for retrolental fibroplasia: (1) respiratory distress syndrome; (2) multiple episodes of bradycardia apnoea; (3) exchange transfusions; (4) hyaline membrane disease; (5) anemia of prematurity; (6) hyperbilirubinemia; (7) avitaminosis E; (8) cardiovascular defects; (9) infectious diseases; (10) multiple births; (11) hypocalcemia; (12) hypothermia; (13) hemorrhagic tendency; (14) delayed coaptation of the retina, and (15) spastic diplegia.

Various factors have been found to be predictors of the relative risk of breast cancer (Table 2). Epidemiologic variables influencing breast cancer risk include age, marital status, geographic location, racial or ethnic extraction, and socioeconomic status. The risk of developing mammary carcinoma is increased with advancing age, among unmarried women, in the United States and Europe, and among women of higher socioeconomic classes. Conversely, a decreased breast cancer risk is observed among fertile married women in Asian countries, among Oriental women, and in lower socioeconomic classes. Re

INTRODUCTION: Omphalocele is a rare congenital abdominal wall defect characterized by the herniation of abdominal organs through the umbilical ring, covered by a protecting sac. The etiology is not fully understood, and little is known about the role of maternal factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of maternal risk factors in the development of omphalocele.
METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted using data from Swedish national registries between 1997 and 2016. The study included 207 mothers of children born with omphalocele (cases) and 2,070 contro…

INTRODUCTION: Posterior capsule opacification represents a major public health concern, particularly in developing countries. It is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Its pathogenesis involves multifactorial mechanisms, including surgical, biomolecular, and patient-related factors.
AIM: A retrospective case-control study was initiated to identify the risk factors for the development of posterior capsule opacification.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Two hundred eyes undergoing cataract surgery at the ophthalmology department of Kasserine Regional Hospital between 2019 and 2023, opera…
