Bidirectional Dynamics between Sibling Warmth, Conflict, and Rivalry and Depressive Symptoms in Chinese Adolescents: The Moderating Role of Sibling Structure.

Although the association between adolescents’ sibling relationships and depressive symptoms has been investigated, the within-person bidirectional dynamics between these constructs have remained unclear. Additionally, few studies have examined whether and how sibling structure moderates these associations. To address these gaps, the present study utilized four-wave longitudinal data collected at six-month intervals from 1,927 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.67, SDage = 1.69; 50.06% female). Using a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model, the current study examined the within-person bidirecti

The Role of Institutional Placement, Family Conflict, and Homosexuality in Homelessness Pathways Among Latino LGBT Youth in New York City.

Despite the overrepresentation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth among the homeless, the processes leading to their homelessness are understudied. This ethnographic study sought to elucidate the role of sexual orientation in the pathway to housing instability among young gay men. Fieldwork included 18 months of participant observations in public spaces and at a homeless LGBT youth organization in New York City, as well as formal semistructured interviews with 14 Latino young men and five staff. Three distinct pathways emerged. Some youth became homeless after placement in

Occupational burnout during war: The role of stress, disruptions in routine, sleep, work-family conflict, and organizational support as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout, resulting from long-term exposure to work-related stressors, is a significant risk factor for both physical and mental health of employees. Most research on burnout focuses on routine situations, with less attention given to its causes and manifestations during prolonged national crises such as war. According to the Conservation of Resources theory, wartime conditions are associated with a loss of resources, leading to accelerated burnout. This study aimed to examine burnout among employees during the war in Israel that broke out in October 2023, placing the p

Childhood emotional maltreatment and coping with romantic relationship conflicts in women during early adulthood: The protective role of feminist identity.

Feminism has shown a protective effect on women's mental health and well-being. However, there exists a prevailing perception that feminism is incompatible with heterosexual romance. Despite this perspective, emerging research suggests that identifying with feminism can have positive implications for women's romantic relationships. The authors seek to contribute to existing literature by exploring the beneficial effects of feminist identity on women's romantic relationships. A total of 328 Chinese female undergraduates who were currently in romantic relationships completed the measurement of c

Workplace Bullying and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptomology: The Influence of Role Conflict and the Moderating Effects of Neuroticism and Managerial Competencies.

Research has explored numerous consequences of workplace bullying, including a recent link to the exhibition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology. Role conflict as a workplace stressor may contribute to instances of bullying from a passive perspective, which may lead to PTSD symptomology in victims. What remains less explored is if role conflict has a direct relationship to PTSD symptomology and how personality traits such as neuroticism and workplace factors such as managerial competencies may moderate the stress brought on by role conflict. Hence the present study seeks to e…

Effects of effort-reward imbalance on emergency nurses' health: a mediating and moderating role of emotional exhaustion and work-family conflict.

BACKGROUND: Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) is a prevalent issue in the healthcare sector, particularly in the high-intensity, high-risk, and high-stress environment of the emergency department. This results in emergency department nurses bearing heavier workloads, responsibilities, and time commitments compared to their counterparts in other departments. ERI poses significant risks to their physical, psychological, and sleep quality. Therefore, it is essential to explore the mechanisms through which ERI influences the health of emergency department nurses. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigat

How do marital conflicts influence post-traumatic growth among infertile women? The moderation role of coping strategies.

In the current study, the authors aimed to investigate the post-traumatic growth (PTG) among infertile women who experience conflicts with their spouses, and the role of personal coping strategies in mitigating such influences. A total of 267 infertile female patients were recruited from a reproductive medical center in China. OLS regressions with moderation effects of coping strategies were conducted. Our results showed that coping strategies had the main influence on infertile women's PTG, and minimizing and avoiding marital conflicts had a particularly negative effect on PTG when infertile

The role of vitamin D in cancer prevention: does UV protection conflict with the need to raise low levels of vitamin D?

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is essential for life. Part of the body's supply of vitamin D is ingested in food, but UV induced vitamin D synthesis in the body plays an even more important role. UV irradiation is a cause for the currently rising incidence of skin cancer in many countries; on the other hand, Vitamin D might be protective against some cancers. In this paper we summarize the current data on vitamin D and cancer and on the vitamin D status of populations in Europe and discuss whether current recommendations on UV protection require changes. METHODS: In 2008, the International Agency for

The role of memory-related gene WWC1 (KIBRA) in lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder: evidence from two independent samples from African conflict regions.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from the formation of a strong memory for the sensory-perceptual and affective representations of traumatic experiences, which is detached from the corresponding autobiographical context information. Because WWC1, the gene encoding protein KIBRA, is associated with long-term memory performance, we hypothesized that common WWC1 alleles influence the risk for a lifetime diagnosis of PTSD. METHODS: Traumatic load and diagnosis of current and lifetime PTSD were assessed in two independent African samples of survivors from conflict zones who

Role of basal stress hormones and amygdala dimensions in stress coping strategies of male rhesus monkeys in response to a hazard-reward conflict.

OBJECTIVES: In the present study the effect of stress on monkeys that had learned to retrieve food from a five-chamber receptacle, as well as the relationship between their behavior and the serum cortisol and epinephrine levels and relative size of the amygdala was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six male rhesus monkeys were individually given access to the food reward orderly. They could easily retrieve the rewards from all chambers except for the chamber 4, which a brief, mild electric shock (3 V) was delivered to them upon touching the chamber's interior. The coping behaviors were video-

The role of off-path glances: A quantitative analysis of rear-end conflicts involving Chinese professional truck drivers as the striking partners.

INTRODUCTION: Rear-end crashes are one of the most frequent crash types in China, leading to significant economic and societal losses. The development of active safety systems - such as Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) - could avoid or mitigate the consequences of these crashes in Chinese traffic situations. However, a clear understanding of the crash causation mechanisms is necessary for the design of these systems. METHOD: Manually coded variables were extracted from a naturalistic driving study conducted with commercial vehicles in Shanghai. Quantitative analyses of rear-end crash
