Scalp nodular syphilis:Case illustrated.

A 32-year-old male presented with asymptomatic scalp nodules persisting for over two months. Histopathological examination, positive Treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA), a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titer of 1:32, and subsequent resolution post-treatment collectively confirmed a diagnosis of secondary syphilis.

Infantile Myofibroma of Scalp.

Infantile myofibroma (IM) is the most common congenital fibrous tumor of infancy, originating from fibroblasts and myofibroblasts and presen … ial until lesion stabilization or regression is confirmed. Here, we present a female neonate with a scalp IM. Persistent ulceration, recurrent bleeding, inability to definitively exclude malignancy on imaging, and significant maternal distress warranted the decision for surgical excision. This case emphasizes the importance of individualized care in IM, …

Scalp Biopsies for Alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is one of the most common reasons patients seek dermatologic evaluation. Although clinical examination and trichoscopy establish the diagnosis in most cases, scalp biopsy remains essential when findings are inconclusive, when cicatricial alopecia is suspected, or when histopathologic documentation is required before systemic therapy. METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase on the indications, biopsy site selection, sampling technique, specimen processing, and histopathologic interpretation of scalp biopsy in alopecia. RESULTS: …

Treatment of Scalp Psoriasis.

Scalp involvement is seen in a majority of individuals with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune skin disease with variable phenotypes. Occasionally, isolated scalp involvement is observed; and this causes significant psychosocial morbidity. Management of scalp psoriasis is difficult, in part due to the difficulty of applying topical agents and its refractory nature. Various treatment options are available with variable efficacy. Topical agents include topical steroids, keratolytics, tar and anthralin compounds, vitamin D analogues, and vitamin A derivatives. The combination treatment of topical be…

Sebaceous Nevus of the Scalp.

Excisions of scalp nevus sebaceous (NS) presents a unique challenge due to limited soft tissue laxity, hair-bearing skin, and convex surfaces which often leave the surgeon and patient underwhelmed with the reconstructive outcome. In this study, the authors conducted an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of patients who underwent excision of pathologically proven scalp primary NS from 2003 to 2017 at our institution to better define the reconstructive outcomes and options for treatment of pediatric scalp NS. 92 patients were included in the study, 54 males (58.7%) and 38 f…

Reconstruction of the Forehead and Scalp.

Tissue inelasticity and the hair-bearing nature of the scalp and forehead pose unique challenges during reconstruction. A thorough understanding of the surgical anatomy of the scalp and forehead is paramount for optimal reconstructive outcomes. Primary wound closure is usually preferred over secondary intention healing and skin grafting. Use of dermal alternatives and tissue expansion are adjunctive therapies to facilitate scalp wound closure. Local skin and soft tissue flaps are commonly used for most small to medium defects; however, microsurgical free tissue transfer can be considered for l…

Metastatic meningioma of the scalp.

Meningiomas generally present as slow-growing, expanding intracranial lesions and are the most common benign intracranial tumor in adults. Rarely, meningiomas can exhibit malignant potential and present as extracranial soft-tissue masses through extension or as primary extracranial cutaneous neoplasms. Although they are uncommonly encountered by dermatologists, it is important to include meningioma in the differential diagnosis for scalp neoplasms. We present a rare case of a 68-year-old woman with scalp metastasis of meningioma 11 years after initial resection of the primary tumor.

Solitary Piloleiomyoma in the Scalp.

Cutaneous leiomyomas can be classified into three types according to the site of origin: piloleiomyoma, angioleiomyoma, and dartoic (genital) leiomyoma. It might be expected that leiomyomas are commonly found on the scalp because there are many arrector pili muscles and vessels. However, leiomyomas are actually rarely reported in the scalp. Recently, we observed a case of cutaneous leiomyoma in the scalp and present our experience along with a literature review.
