INTRODUCTION: Scleroderma is a rare disease of the connective tissue (50 to 200 patients/1 million people; 60,000 patients in France). We conducted a literature review about the orofacial manifestations of scleroderma that have been little studied.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 45 articles found in 6 different databases by using the keywords "scleroderma", "systemic sclerosis", "oral medicine", "face" and published between 1944 and 2016 were selected, for a total of 328 patients.
RESULTS: A total of 1187 orofacial manifestations of scleroderma were identified, occurring mainly in women (84.5%) w

Scleroderma or systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue, characterized by vascular abnormalities and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Kidney, esophagus, heart and lung are most frequently involved. According to the extensive skin involvement and the internal organ injury, scleroderma is classified in limited and diffuse forms. Vascular injury is considered the first event in the pathogenesis of scleroderma. Vasculopathy primarily affects the microcirculation and the small vessels decreasing blood flow that results in chronic ischemia. Chro

Scleroderma poses many difficulties and challenges for the treating dentist. Until now, dental implant treatment for patients with scleroderma was limited to either complete overdentures or short-span fixed partial dentures. This clinical report describes the use of modified techniques to fabricate a long-span fixed prosthesis delivered after serial extractions and implant placement.

Three patients with limited cutaneous scleroderma (CREST syndrome) and acute calcific periarthritis are presented. "Chalky" bursal effusion in one patient demonstrated masses of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals. In contrast to idiopathic acute calcific periarthritis, resorption of periarticular calcifications after resolution of acute attacks occurs both less frequently and incompletely in scleroderma associated acute calcific periarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and distinguish detailed nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) findings in patients with limited (lcSSc) and diffuse (dcSSc) cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: A total of 157 patients was recruited, 100 with lcSSc, 27 with dcSSc and 30 with primary Raynaud phenomenon (pRP). The NVC SSc pattern and the absolute number of capillaries (per linear millimetre) were performed at the first NVC analysis. 'Early'/'Active' NVC status (capillary dilations, microhaemorrhages and giant capillaries) and 'Late' NVC status (number of capillaries, altered microvascular archite

OBJECTIVES: Although systemic sclerosis (SSc) is known to affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, most of the literature focuses on esophageal, small intestinal, or anorectal manifestations. There have been no reviews focused on large bowel SSc complications in over 30 years. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic review of colonic manifestations and complications of SSc.
METHODS: An experienced librarian conducted a search of databases, including English and Spanish articles. The search used keywords including "systemic sclerosis," "scleroderma," and "colon." A systematic review wa

Syndecan-1 is a member of the transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan family, whose membrane-bound and soluble forms are involved in wound healing, inflammation and vascular biology. Because these physiological events are implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc), we investigated the clinical association of serum syndecan-1 levels in this disease. Serum syndecan-1 levels were significantly higher in SSc patients, both in diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc) and limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc), than in healthy individuals, while comparable between dcSSc and lcSSc groups. In late stag

For many years observational studies and clinical trials on systemic sclerosis (SSc) have been carried out only on patients who met the 1980 American College of Rheumatology-ACR preliminary classification criteria. However, this lead to the exclusion from all those studies of subset patients, particularly those with a limited cutaneous SSc-sine scleroderma subset, because, despite a diagnosis of SSc based on Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) associated with digital pitting scars/ulcers, or by sclerodactyly and telangiectasia and/or typical esophagopathy and/or interstitial fibrosis detected by High Re

Gemcitabine is a nucleosid analog approved for use in the treatment of metastatic urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. We describe an unusual case of scleroderma-like changes of the lower extremities after treatment by gemcitabine for metastatic carcinoma of the bladder. The patient developed initial inflammatory edema (3 kg) restricted to the lower extremities and subsequent scleroderma-like changes after 2 cycles of gemcitabine. Cutaneous biopsy specimen revealed diffuse sclerosis without involvment of the fascia or muscle. Discontinuation of gemcitabine resulted in dramatic removal of the e

Indirect immunofluorescence(IIF) and double immunodiffusion (DID) were performed on the sera of 64 patients who had a nucleolar immunofluorescence pattern on HEp-2 cells. Forty-nine of the sera were from 296 patients with systemic scleroderma (SSc) and 15 sera were from 214 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A homogeneous nucleolar staining pattern was found in 45 of the 64 sera (70.3%), a clumpy fluorescence associated with fibrillarin antibody in 14 (21.8%) and a speckled pattern was found in five of the sera (7.8%). There was a clear correlation between the sera which showed

Objective. We report a rare case of keloidal scleroderma and provide an analysis of similar cases. Results. A 41 year-old woman presented with dark brown, indurated, exophytic nodules over the chest along with smaller hyperpigmented plaques scattered over the abdomen, with concomitant sclerodactyly. The clinical, laboratory, and pathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of keloidal scleroderma. The patient was treated with methotrexate, resulting in reduced firmness of her plaques and no new lesions. A literature review of previously reported cases was performed using keywords inc

OBJECTIVES: A key mediator in cold-sensation is the protein transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8), which is expressed on sensory nerves and cutaneous blood vessels. These receptors are activated by cold temperatures and play a key role in body thermoregulation. Cold sensitivity and Raynaud's phenomenon are frequent clinical features in scleroderma, and are thought to be secondary to a local defect in cutaneous thermoregulation. We investigated whether autoantibodies targeting TRPM8 were present in the sera of patients with scleroderma as evidence for a possible mechanism for an acq

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are the standard of care for various malignancies and have been associated with a wide spectrum of complications that are phenotypically akin to primary autoimmune diseases. While the literature on these toxicities is growing, there is a paucity of data regarding ICI-associated scleroderma which can carry significant morbidity and limit the ability to continue effective ICI therapy. Our review aimed to analyze the current literature on ICI-associated systemic scleroderma (ICI-SSc) and key scleroderma mimics. Cases of ICI-SSc had notable differences from prima

A 39-year-old woman with a 4-year history of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) and no prior exposure to D-penicillamine presented with bilateral fluctuating ptosis of 1 week duration. On evaluation, she was found to have elevated acetylcholine receptor antibody levels and a positive neostigmine test confirming the diagnosis of ocular myasthenia gravis (MG). The patient was treated with oral prednisolone and pyridostigmine resulting in significant improvement within 2 weeks. The co-occurrence of systemic sclerosis (SSc) and MG is rare and when such an association is seen, it is usual

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to examine changes in the incidence of systemic sclerosis (SSc) in Finland using two different classification criteria.
METHOD: Medical records of patients who had been registered with ICD-10 code M34 from 1999 to 2018 in two university hospitals were reviewed retrospectively. This period was divided into 5 year periods: 1999-2003, 2004-2008, 2009-2013, and 2014-2018. Using American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) 2013 criteria and clinical findings, we reclassified patients into four groups: diffuse SSc, limited SSc

INTRODUCTION: Scleroderma featuring rare connective tissue disease that manifests as skin sclerosis and variable systemic involvement. Two categories of scleroderma are known: systemic sclerosis, characterized by cutaneous sclerosis and visceral involvement and localized scleroderma or morphea which classically presents benign evolution and self-limited, confined to the skin and/or underlying tissue. Recent studies show that the localized form may possibly course with involvement of internal organs and variable morbidity. This study aimed to determine the demographic characteristics, the preva

BACKGROUND: Secondary Raynaud's phenomenon in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis is driven by structural microvascular disease and is frequently accompanied by hand oedema, stiffness, and functional disability. Evidence for pragmatic physiotherapy approaches addressing both vascular symptoms and soft-tissue involvement remains limited.
CASE: A 66-year-old man with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (diagnosed in 2009) and long-standing triphasic Raynaud's symptoms reported cold-induced digital pain, recurrent fissures with prior ulceration, puffy hands, reduced finger range of motion, and

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Scleroderma is a disease characterized by excessive deposition of collagen and extracellular matrix proteins in affected organ systems, which results in tissue fibrosis and organ dysfunction. It is estimated that 90% of patients with systemic sclerosis have gastrointestinal involvement, with approximately 50% being symptomatic. Clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal scleroderma manifestations relate to impaired motility and absorption and ultimately malnutrition. Treatments for these symptoms often fail and are limited. The objective of this case report is to
