PURPOSE: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a malignant eyelid tumor of the ocular adnexa that is primarily treated via surgical excision. Few therapies exist in advanced cases, and medical therapy is limited because of our incomplete understanding of SC biology. Herein, we describe a technique to culture human ocular adnexal SC for use as an in vitro model.

Cutaneous lesions consonant with Muir-Torre syndrome strongly suggest hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Ponti et al. discuss the importance of combining molecular genetic features of the sebaceous neoplasms, including microsatellite instability and immunohistochemistry, with family history, to determine the likelihood of HNPCC. Proof of diagnosis is identification of one of the mismatch repair germline mutations.

Eyelid sebaceous carcinoma is a rare tumour with slow growth and it is one of the most aggressive malignancies of the eyelid. Death rate can reach 6%. The diagnosis is often delayed because it is confused with other periocular lesions. The authors describe a case with atypical presentation, regarding rapid growth rate and exophytic aspect. Female, 78 years, presenting lower eyelid tumour with 4 months of evolution. Ophthalmological examination showed a tarsal exophytic tumour (22 mm), non-adherent to bulbar conjunctiva. She was medicated topically for 3 months, with the diagnosis of chalazio.

A 62-year-old man sought treatment for an eyelid mass containing osseous metaplasia in an area of lymphoid hyperplasia. An extensive oncologic workup ruled out malignancy. Nevus sebaceus (NS)(organoid nevus) is a benign follicular neoplasm that commonly occurs on the scalp, face, or neck. With time, it may give rise to benign or malignant tumors such as trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Rarely, other types of neoplasms may develop. We present a 76-year-old woman with several trichoblastomas as well as a primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma arising within a preexisting NS that was treated with frozen section excision.

Histopathological examination was performed on cutaneous biopsies from 900 dogs with skin lesions from Zimbabwe, collected from 1996 to 2000. Clinical data were collected from medical records. Sixty per cent (540/900) of the cases were tumours and 40% (360/900) were non-neoplastic inflammatory or degenerative diseases. Thirty different histological types of tumour were diagnosed.
