Selective attentional bias related to the noticeability aspect of anxiety symptoms in generalized social phobia.

Persons with generalized social phobia were compared to nonanxious controls using the modified Stroop test of attentional biases and self-report questionnaires. Results indicated that participants with social phobia showed attentional biases to socially threatening words such as those describing negative evaluation (e.g., criticize) and those describing anxiety symptoms that are noticeable by others (e.g., blushing) as compared to nonanxious control participants, but not to words describing anxiety symptoms that are less noticeable to others. Participants with social phobia showed more attenti

Prehospital transport prioritization and time-varying selection bias in traffic-related multi-patient incidents: a nationwide retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In prehospital multi-patient traffic incidents, the first ambulance to depart -priority transport - may reflect underlying injury severity rather than a treatment effect, as more severely injured patients are systematically prioritized. Conventional statistical methods often fail to separate this severity-dependent selection from actual outcomes. We applied a "doubly robust" statistical framework (augmented inverse probability weighting, AIPW), which combines a treatment model and an outcome model, to better account for measured differences, reduce selection bias, and examine wheth…

Extrapolating Vincristine-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy From Caucasian to Kenyan Populations: Impact of Type I and Type II Selection Bias.

Vincristine is a cornerstone of pediatric chemotherapy, but its use is limited by vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN). Paradoxi … sess the impact of Type I (informative censoring) and Type II (population-specific effect modifier) selection bias on model predictions. A three-compartment PK model with saturable distribution and a proportional-odds PKPD model with Markov elements jointly described vincristine disposition and VIPN risk. Kenyan children showed lower clearance but markedly reduc …

Self-selection bias in eating disorders outcomes research: Does treatment response of underweight research participants and non-participants differ?

Observational treatment studies provide a valuable alternative to RCTs but are often criticized due to potential self-selection biases. Studies comparing those who do and do not participate in research on eating disorder treatment are scarce, but necessary to evaluate the impact of self-selection bias on outcomes. All consecutive underweight adult first admissions (N = 392) to an integrated inpatient (IP)-partial hospital (PH) behavioral specialty program were invited to participate in a longitudinal study of eating disorder treatment. Demographic and hospital course data were collected on par…

Methodological factors in determining rates of dementia in transient ischemic attack and stroke: (I) impact of baseline selection bias.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Many previous studies on dementia in stroke have restrictive inclusion criteria, which may result in underestimation of dementia rates. We undertook a large prospective population-based study of all transient ischemic attack and stroke to determine the impact of study entry criteria on measured rates of pre- and postevent dementia. METHODS: All patients with acute transient ischemic attack or stroke from a defined population of 92 728 are referred from primary care or at hospital admission to the Oxford Vascular Study (2002-2007) and have baseline clinical and cognitiv

Sperm output of healthy men in Australia: magnitude of bias due to self-selected volunteers.

Controversial claims, based on a meta-analysis aggregating 61 heterogeneous observational studies, have been made that human sperm output has decreased by 50% over the last six decades and that this trend may be due to global pollution. If true, such effects should be evident in all areas of the globe; however, longitudinal studies within single centres in Europe and America have produced conflicting results and there are no reports from the southern hemisphere. We therefore reviewed semen analyses obtained from 1980-1995 from 689 healthy men volunteering for screening either as potential sper

Comparative analysis of codon usage bias revealed natural selection-driven evolution and host adaptation of infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus.

The infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is an important threat for global salmonid aquaculture, particularly Oncorhynchus mykiss. Understanding molecular mechanisms of evolution and host adaptation is crucial. This study comparatively analyses codon usage bias (CUB) between IHNV genotypes and their relations to host adaptation and evolutionary forces. Phylogenetic analysis of IHNV reveals topological differences based on whole-genome and G gene. Temporal analysis mapped major genotypic diversification to the 1950s-1970s. At the whole-genome and G gene levels, the most frequently pr

Impact of selection bias on the association of kidney function polygenic scores with CKD progression in populations with CKD.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The associations of polygenic scores (PGS) for eGFR, with clinical outcomes in prevalent CKD populations have not been well evaluated. Collider bias may distort associations of exposures (including PGS) with outcomes in populations with prevalent disease. METHODS: Analyses included European ancestry participants from UK Biobank and three CKD cohorts (SHARP, CRIC and EMPA-KIDNEY) without ESKD at baseline. The exposure was a PGS for low eGFR derived from GWAS of eGFR in the FinnGen cohort. The primary outcomes were eGFR slope (mls/min/1.73m2/year) and kidney disease p

Genomic selection accuracy and bias using imputed genotypes on growth, welfare and fitness traits in two Pekin duck lines.

BACKGROUND: The study explored the accuracy and biases of genomic selection in two commercial Pekin duck lines, focusing on their performance under real-world breeding practices. A dataset of 26 K duck records with phenotype and imputed genotype information (60 K chip) was analysed for growth, welfare, and primary feather length traits. Mixed linear models with relationship matrices from pedigree (BLUP) or markers (GBLUP) were used to estimate variance components and breeding values. We then assessed selection accuracies and biases to determine the most appropriate models. RESULTS: Results sho

Evidence for Strong Mutation Bias toward, and Selection against, U Content in SARS-CoV-2: Implications for Vaccine Design.

Large-scale re-engineering of synonymous sites is a promising strategy to generate vaccines either through synthesis of attenuated viruses or via codon-optimized genes in DNA vaccines. Attenuation typically relies on deoptimization of codon pairs and maximization of CpG dinucleotide frequencies. So as to formulate evolutionarily informed attenuation strategies that aim to force nucleotide usage against the direction favored by selection, here, we examine available whole-genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 to infer patterns of mutation and selection on synonymous sites. Analysis of mutational profil

Comparing bicyclists who use smartphone apps to record rides with those who do not: implications for representativeness and selection bias.

Increasing population levels of cycling has the potential to improve public health by increasing physical activity. As cyclists have begun u … proportion of ridership captured. A sample calculation illustrated how such differences may induce selection bias in smartphone-data-based research on infrastructure and motor-vehicle-cyclist crash risk. We illustrate in the sample scenario how the bias can be corrected, assuming inverse-probability-of-selection weights can be accurately specified. The presente …

Inequalities in the health survey using validation question to filter insufficient effort responding: reducing overestimated effects or creating selection bias?

BACKGROUND: The presence of insufficient effort responding participants (IERPs) in a survey can produce systematic bias. Validation questions are commonly used to exclude IERPs. Participants were defined as IERPs if responding inconsistently to two matched validation questions, and non-insufficient effort responding participants (non-IERPs) if responding consistently. However, it has not been tested whether validation questions themselves could result in selection bias. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey conducted in Guangxi, China. Participants' intentions to use antibiotics fo…

Quantifying structural selection bias in observational cohort data: a ponderation analysis of age - specific incidence rates to inform vaccine safety verification.

BACKGROUND: A recent nationwide cohort study reported an unadjusted Hazard Ratio (HR) of 2.714 for Vitiligo incidence following COVID-19 vaccination, indicating a major safety concern. This finding was based on cohorts with an ≈ 11-year age difference, immediately raising critical concerns regarding extreme structural selection and detection bias. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that this extreme association is an artifact of a fatal methodological flaw, challenging the study's internal validity and subsequent external validity. We aim to quantitatively separate the HR attributable to the structur

Completeness and selection bias of a Belgian multidisciplinary, registration-based study on the EFFectiveness and quality of Endometrial Cancer Treatment (EFFECT).

BACKGROUND: With the aim of obtaining more uniformity and quality in the treatment of corpus uteri cancer in Belgium, the EFFECT project has prospectively collected detailed information on the real-world clinical care offered to 4063 Belgian women with primary corpus uteri cancer. However, as data was collected on a voluntary basis, data may be incomplete and biased. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the completeness and potential selection bias of the EFFECT database. METHODS: Five databases were deterministically coupled by use of the patient's national social security number. Participa…

A protocol to identify and minimise selection and information bias in abattoir surveys estimating prevalence, using Fasciola hepatica as an example.

Abattoir surveys and findings from post-mortem meat inspection are commonly used to estimate infection or disease prevalence in farm animal populations. However, the function of an abattoir is to slaughter animals for human consumption, and the collection of information on animal health for research purposes is a secondary objective. This can result in methodological shortcomings leading to biased prevalence estimates. Selection bias can occur when the study population as obtained from the abattoir is not an accurate representation of the target population. Virtually all of the tests used in a…

Interfacial Charge Transfer Governs Bias-Polarity-Selective Electroluminescence in van der Waals Tunneling Heterostructures.

Inelastic electron tunneling (IET) provides an efficient route for electroluminescence (EL) in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, yet the microscopic origin of its bias-polarity dependence remains elusive due to structural asymmetry in prior devices. Here, we report a pronounced bias-polarity-selective EL in structurally symmetric graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/graphene tunneling junctions coupled to CrSBr; light emission is observed exclusively under positive bias and is fully quenched under negative bias. We demonstrate that strong interfacial charge transfer between CrSBr and th
