Background Acoustic neuromas (ANs) are consistently associated with decreased quality of life (QOL) related to the physical and psychosocial impacts of symptoms experienced from the tumour and its treatment. This study explored patient-reported experiences of ANs in New Zealand, with a focus on the impact on QOL and the provision of information, support and services. Methods A mixed methods approach was taken, conducting an online community survey that included the Penn Acoustic Neuroma Quality of Life Scale (N = 52). Those who indicated interest were offered semi-structured interviews after

BACKGROUND: Caring for a relative with dementia can be demanding and time-consuming. It is not uncommon for them to be overburdened and overworked, which can lead to symptoms of depression or anxiety disorders in 2/3 of cases. One possibility for treating family carers who have these issues is special medical rehabilitation (rehab). However, studies have shown that while such rehab is effective, it is not sustainable. To increase the sustainability of rehab for this target group, structured telephone-based aftercare groups were implemented in the present study. A process evaluation was conduct

OBJECTIVE: Investigations into online eating disorder (ED) communities have allowed for a rich exploration of lived experiences focused on a number of aspects, such as recovery and support groups. There is a lack of understanding around compulsive exercise (CE), which is often a characterizing condition of EDs. Exploring the lived experiences of CE as discussed online could provide helpful insight towards a better understanding of CE. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore experiences around CE and EDs shared on social media sites.
METHOD: Social media posts related to CE and EDs

Thyroid foundations and associations provide free information and support for thyroid patients in countries throughout the world. Their efforts save physicians time and increase patient understanding and compliance while reducing anxiety. Personal responsiveness to a patient's concerns is important but costly. Physicians can help by referring patients to local groups, accepting patient referrals from these organizations, and encouraging thyroid patients and organizations to help with financial support.

OBJECTIVES: Parents of children diagnosed with critical illnesses face multiple challenges during their caregiving experience. However, relevant studies have been limited in the Chinese context. Guided by the stress and coping model, we conducted a qualitative study to identify the stressors, coping strategies, and adjustment experiences of Hong Kong parents of children with cancer or hematological disorders.
METHODS: We recruited 15 parents of children with cancer or hematological disorders requiring bone marrow transplantation and were currently >2 years post-treatment. They participated in

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is the perception of noise without a corresponding external stimulus. Current management typically aims to moderate associated psychosocial stressors and allow sufferers to retain an adequate quality of life. With the increasing recognition of the Internet as a repository for health advice, information, and support, the online support group has become a popular coping strategy for those living with chronic conditions such as tinnitus. Patients find that communicating with each other, providing encouragement, and sharing information in the absence of physical and temporal boun

When AIDS is becoming a chronic disease, gay men with multiple loss experiences can easily turn into a forgotten group of widowers. Due to new medical treatment HIV-infected gay men are living longer and also have to deal with loss and surviving. This paper argues in favour of group grief therapy for multiple loss and survival problems, within the scope of peer support in the gay community during the AIDS era. In this group psychotherapy special attention is given to the influence of a low gay self-esteem on the grief process and surviving strategies.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist regarding the type of support patients need when experiencing early pregnancy loss (EPL). The objective of this study is to explore how patients emotionally cope with EPL and to assess if there is interest in a peer EPL support program with a self-compassion component.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with patients who experienced EPL in the past two years. We evaluated the kinds of support that patients felt were most helpful, interest in a possible peer EPL support person, and suggestions for the creation of such a program. Content analysis was

Peer support is integral to a variety of approaches to alcohol and drug problems. However, there is limited information about the best ways to facilitate it. The "social model" approach developed in California offers useful suggestions for facilitating peer support in residential recovery settings. Key principles include using 12-step or other mutual-help group strategies to create and facilitate a recovery environment, involving program participants in decision making and facility governance, using personal recovery experience as a way to help others, and emphasizing recovery as an interactio

This article aims to review the scarce available evidence on the effectiveness of the Well Leg Programme within the Lindsay Leg Clubs in terms of preventing wound recurrence and improving members' wellbeing. It collates the numerical data on members' wounds and healing rates from the Lindsay Leg Club relational database and members' narratives from a qualitative service evaluation of the Lindsay Leg Clubs. Findings of the review suggest that remaining within the Well Leg regime for several months (or longer) after having had a healed ulcer seems to provide further opportunity to prevent recurr

BACKGROUND: Self-help organizations act in a self-determined manner, but can be strengthened by conducive framework conditions such as advanced training programs. The Austrian Competence and Service Agency for Self-help ÖKUSS was created as part of the framework of the concept for public promotion of self-help. It developed an advanced training program for the systematic support of nationwide self-help organizations (NSHO). The article describes the conceptual development of an advanced training program and discusses how to deal with ambivalences arising in the process.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: International guidelines for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) suggest that patients benefit from becoming members of patient associations. However, the scientific evidence for this is limited and unconvincing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) between axSpA patients belonging to patient associations versus those who do not.
RECENT FINDINGS: Out of 680 patients, 301 (44.3%) were members of a patient association. A significant proportion of association members
