Tropheryma whipplei in fecal samples from children, Senegal.

We tested fecal samples from 150 healthy children 2-10 years of age who lived in rural Senegal and found the prevalence of Tropheryma whipplei was 44%. Unique genotypes were associated with this bacterium. Our findings suggest that T. whipplei is emerging as a highly prevalent pathogen in sub-Saharan Africa.

Epidemiology and management of bacterial vaginosis in Dakar, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: In Africa, vulvovaginal infections represent a public health issue due to their frequency and complications. Recent studies have shown a significant shift in bacterial ecology, which is increasingly dominated by bacterial vaginosis. The PETAL study aimed to determine the epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological profile of vulvovaginal infections in Dakar (Senegal), to assess the predictive etiological value of the syndromic approach by comparing it with microbiological results, and to evaluate the clinical and microbiological efficacy and the tolerance of treating bacterial v…

Resting behavior of Aedes aegypti in southeastern Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Only the sylvatic and zoophilic population of Aedes aegypti was formerly identified in southeastern Senegal. A newly established anthropophilic population was detected in the urban area of the Kedougou city. Because of its new behavior, this species could play a primary role in the transmission of dengue and other arboviruses in this area. Because these arboviruses have no vaccine and specific treatments, vector control remains the only effective way to control their outbreaks. Effective vector control strategies require to understand some aspects of the bioecology of the vector, s…

Post-ivermectin encephalopathy in Senegal: a case report.

Ivermectin is an ant parasitic drug used for combating onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. It works by inhibiting the function of neurons and muscles, thus causing paralysis of microfilariae. Side effects of this drug have been reported including post-ivermectin encephalopathy requiring emergency care in hospital. We report the case of a 35 years old patient living in rural areas of Senegal who presented two days after a mistake in administration of a second dose of ivermectin, headaches, altered consciousness and bilateral blindness. The workup revealed brain white matter lesions, abnorm…

Oesophageal atresia: Diagnosis and prognosis in Dakar, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal atresia is a neonatal emergency surgery whose prognosis has improved significantly in industrialised countries in recent decades. Negative cutaneous effects of medicinal plants in Senegal.

Use of medicinal plants is common and widespread throughout Africa, including in Senegal. Because efficacy has been demonstrated, public policies have been instituted that have allowed plant-based therapies to have an important role in general primary care. However, little is known about the cutaneous safety of many plant-based therapies. In this 6-month prospective study all cases of dermatitis induced or aggravated by exclusive use of medicinal plants were evaluated via skin allergy testing. The results were classified and compared with the available literature. Forty-three cases of plant-th…

[Can schistosomiasis be defeated? An example from Senegal].

The authors report the results of actions combatting schistosomiasis since 2008 in 53 villages in eastern Senegal, including the creation of 450 latrines and the distribution of praziquentel. The prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni has fallen from 44% in 2006 to 1.8% today. To succeed in eradicating schistosomiasis, access to non-infected water must be improved to ensure the adhesion of local village communities.

[Intracranial suppurations of otorhinolaryngological origin in children in Senegal].

BACKGROUND: Intracranial suppurations (ICSs) are poorly assessed in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study from 1st January 1996 to 31st December 2004 in children admitted to the pediatric department of the Hôpital Principal de Dakar, Senegal, for a sinogenic or otitic ICS. Endemic transmission of Rift Valley Fever in Senegal.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an expanding zoonotic disease transmitted from ruminant to ruminant by Culicidae mosquitoes. In 2004, a longitudinal serological survey was performed on small ruminants in the Ferlo are (Senegal) to study RVF transmission and compared the results with those obtained from the same study in 2003. The results confirm that the disease is endemic and that the spatial transmission of RVF is highly heterogeneous. The virus could be maintained during dry season by transovarian transmission in Aedes vexans. Further studies are needed to improve the understanding of the epidem…
