Prepubertal gynecomastia due to testis tumors is a very rare condition. Nearly 5% of the patients with testicular mass present with gynecomastia. Sertoli cell tumors are sporadic in 60% of the reported cases, while the remaining is a component of multiple neoplasia syndromes such as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and Carney complex. We present a 4-year-old boy with gynecomastia due to Sertoli cell tumor with no evidence of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome or Carney complex.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian Stertoli-Ledig cell tumor (SLCT) is a rare type of sex cord-stromal tumor of the ovary. The present study was to evaluate clinicalopahologic features and prognosis of patients with Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor treated by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy during short term follow-up.

A male one year-old beagle dog with unilateral cryptorchism was presented for investigation of reduced appetite. Abdominal sonography and radiography demonstrated abnormal enlargement of the left testicle in the abdominal cavity. This work evaluates adenosine effects on Sertoli cell functions, which are different to those resulting from occupancy of purinergic receptors. The effects of adenosine and N(6)-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA) - an A(1) receptor agonist resistant to cellular uptake - on Sertoli cell physiology were compared. PURPOSE: To present a rare case of Sertoli cell tumor that presents with acute abdomen.
CASE: A 28-year-old patient with symptoms of acute abdomen has presented to our emergency department. Her examinations revealed a 12 x 10 cm heterogeneous mass in the right ovarian fossa. Laparotomy was carried out immediately. Frozen pathological study revealed a low-grade sex-cord stromal cell tumor. Right salpingo-oopherectomy was performed. The regulation of Sertoli cell transferrin and sulfated glycoprotein-2 (SGP-2) mRNA levels by vitamin A was studied in vitamin A deficient rats. A tumor of the right ovary in a 21-year-old single woman is reported. Secondary amenorrhea, hirsutism, acne and deepening of the voice were associated with the tumor. Light and electron microscopic examinations showed that the tumor was composed of cells resembling Sertoli and Leydig cells of the testis in their cytology features and growth patterns. Sertoli cell-only syndrome is defined by the complete absence of germ cells in testicular tissues and always results in male infertility. The aetiology often remains unknown. In this paper, we have investigated possible causes of Sertoli cell-only syndrome with a special focus on genetic causes. Our results show that, for a large part of the patients (>23% in an unselected group), the sex chromosomes are involved. Prepubertal testicular masses are relatively rare. Sertoli cell tumors account for 2% of prepubertal testicular tumors and very few have occurred in the first decade of life. Gynecomastia can be seen in approximately 5% of patients with testicular mass. We present an 8-month-old boy admitted with bilateral gynecomastia and unilateral testicular mass.

METHODS/RESULTS: The clinical features of a patient with Sertoli cell tumor in a cryptorchid testis are presented.
CONCLUSIONS: It is recognized that there is a higher incidence of tumors in undescended testis and among these are Sertoli cell tumors.
