Association between shift work and insomnia in nurses: a cross-sectional study using the Athens Insomnia Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Shift work is a recognized occupational risk factor for sleep disturbances, particularly among healthcare professionals. Nurses are especially vulnerable due to irregular work schedules, night duties, and the high physical and psychological demands of clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the association between shift work and insomnia among nurses using the Athens Insomnia Scale. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 110 nurses. Data were collected using an anonymous electronic questionnaire consisting of an original sociodemographic and occupat

Day-to-day association of night work with musculoskeletal pain and other symptoms: results from the 1001 nights-cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Night work disrupts sleep, which may increase inflammatory processes, pain sensitivity and pain perception. We investigated effects of night shifts on musculoskeletal pain (MSP) and other mental and somatic symptoms using day-to-day measurements in a within-person design. We also disentangled the effect of night work from the effects of shift-related differences in job demands and sleep. METHODS: We included 522 hospital employees with data on ≥1 day shift (n=1926) and ≥1 night shift (n=1422). Participants reported their working hours, MSP, other mental and somatic symptoms, sleep

The acute effect of night work-related circadian misalignment on headache episodes: Results from the 1001 nights-cohort.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of headaches on days with night shifts compared with days with day shifts within the same individuals, accounting for work-related psychosocial stressors, physical job demands, and sleep duration and quality. This approach allowed us to isolate the impact of circadian misalignment due to night work from other potential headache triggers. BACKGROUND: Night work has been suggested to increase the risk of headaches, primarily due to circadian misalignment and disturbed sleep. Most previous studies compare night workers with day workers, but diff

Examining the interplay of micro-break durations and activities for employee recovery: A mixed-methods investigation.

On a given workday, employees spend time at work doing tasks that are not work-related, potentially using these micro-breaks (i.e., short breaks that are less than 10 min) to attempt to recover depleted psychological resources such as energy and attention. However, most work break and recovery research has focused on how individuals recover from work during formal nonwork time with longer or unspecified time durations (e.g., lunch breaks, evenings, vacations), limiting theoretical and empirical understanding of whether employees can experience recovery within the workday via brief micro-breaks

Understanding the mechanistic interlink between circadian misalignment and heart disease in night shift workers: Therapeutic role of behavioral interventions.

BACKGROUND: Rotating and night shift work, especially in older workers, is a growing health concern of modern societies due to the associated high morbidity and mortality rates from cardiovascular disease (CVD). The resulting circadian misalignment disrupts neuroendocrine pathways that regulate cardiovascular physiology, risking myocardial tissue damage and heart dysfunction. AIMS: Considering the gaps in the literature as to how atypical work behaviors may disrupt the temporal link between the central and myocardial oscillators at the level of the proteome and transcriptome, the primary goal

Caffeine consumption as a potential risk factor of osteoporosis development among night shift workers: epidemiological evidences and hypothesis.

Night workers have demonstrated an increased risk of bone fracture. The mechanisms underlying the observed bone changes among night workers remain unclear. They have been attributed to hormonal changes resulting from exposure to light during nighttime, sleep restrictions and distur- bances in expression of circadian rhythms genes. An additional factor that may contribute to increased bone loss among night workers is the con- sumption of caffeinated products. The aim of the work was to review the epidemiological evidence on the association between caffeine consumption and bone density or fractu

Moderate-intensity continuous exercise preserves sleep quality, while high-intensity intermittent exercise disrupts it in female night-shift healthcare workers.

This study aimed to explore the effects of a single bout of moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) on sleep in inactive female healthcare workers with mild sleep impairment during continuous night-shifts. A total of 14 subjects (mean age: 31.8 ± 8.3 years) were randomized to either a MICE (70 ~ 75% of the maximum heart rate (MaxHR) for 47 min), HIIE (90 ~ 95% of the MaxHR for 4 min and 50 ~ 70% for 3 min, for 4 rounds, total 28 min), or the quiet-rest control, 14 h before undertaking a continuous night shift. Sleep quality was assessed sub

Fixed or Rotating Night Shift Work Undertaken by Women: Implications for Fertility and Miscarriage.

This review summarizes the evidence concerning effects of night shift work on women's reproductive health, specifically difficulty in conceiving and miscarriage. We distinguish between fixed night shift and rotating night shift, as the population subgroups exposed, the social and biological mechanisms, and the magnitude of effects are likely to differ; of note, women working fixed night shift are known to have high tolerance for this schedule. We identified two relevant systematic reviews with meta-analyses and five additional studies. Night shift work may give rise to menstrual cycle disturba

Sleep loss and circadian disruption in shift work: health burden and management.

About 1.5 million Australians are shift workers. Shift work is associated with adverse health, safety and performance outcomes. Circadian rh … er with appropriately timed melatonin and/or bright light may be used to facilitate adjustment to a shift work schedule in some situations, such as a long sequence of night work. It is important to manage the health risk of shift workers by minimising vascular risk factors through dietary and other lifestyle approaches.

Work-family conflict and burnout in night-shift nurses with children: the mediating roles of recovery experience and fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurses is a major global concern, particularly among those working night shifts, which can compromise the quality of nursing care, increase turnover intentions, and threaten the stability of the nursing workforce. Previous studies have shown that work-family conflict correlates positively with burnout in nurses, but not enough research has been performed on its relationship among night-shift nurses with children. In addition, the mechanism of this relationship is not completely clear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships among work-family conflict

Dissociation between subjective sleep quality and lipid dysregulation in underground miners: night shift work as an independent risk factor for hypercholesterolemia.

OBJECTIVE: Shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and is established as a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. While poor sleep quality is often hypothesized as the primary mediator linking shift work to dyslipidemia, the extent to which circadian misalignment affects lipid metabolism independently of sleep complaints remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the independent and combined effects of shift work and sleep quality on serum lipid profiles in a cohort of male underground miners. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 921 male miners from the Kailuan Group. Partic
