[The mechanism of distant metastases of alveolar hydatid disease].

The mechanism of the distant metastasis of echinococcosis was investigated using jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) by inoculation of fractions obtained from echinococcal lesions formed in the peritoneal cavity of cotton rats (Sigmoid hispidus). Protoscoleces, cysts, and germinal cells were fractionated from the peritoneal lesions of the cotton rats injected peritoneally with echinococcal germinal cells. Each fraction (protoscoleces; 500 pieces, cysts; 50 pieces, germinal cells; 2 x 10(7) cells) suspended in 0.2 ml of PBS was injected into either the left inguinal vein (IV group) or the mesenteric

Embryogenesis in Litomosoides carinii from pyridoxine deficient cotton rats.

Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) deficiency was induced in cotton rats which were then infected with the filarial parasite Litomosoides carinii. Embryogenesis was assessed microscopically in worms taken from pyridoxine deficient cotton rats and from various categories of control animals. Embryogenesis was retarded in worms from pyridoxine deficient hosts and more abnormal embryos were present in such worms than in those from control animals.

Description of Trichuris travassosi n. sp. (Nematoda: Trichurinae) from a Brazilian rodent, by light and scanning electron microscopy.

A new species of a trichurid nematode Trichuris travassosi n. sp., recovered from a wild rodent in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is described and compared to T. myocastoris (Enigk, 1933) and their differentiation was on the basis of a detailed morphometrical study. Oryzomys nigripes (Olfers, 1818) is a new host record for the genus. The denomination spicular prepuce is proposed to designate the structure previously named spicular sheath and, conversely, spicular sheath to indicate the cuticle that covers the spicule.

Effective Population Size Differences in Calomys musculinus, the Host of Junín Virus: Their Relationship with the Epidemiological History of Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever.

Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF) is a serious endemic disease in Argentina, produced by Junín virus, whose host is the Sigmodontinae rodent Calomys musculinus. Within the endemic area, human incidence and proportion of infected rodents remains high for 5-10 years after the first appearance of the disease (epidemic [E] zone) and then gradually declines to sporadic cases (historic [H] zone). We tested the hypothesis that host populations within the E zone are large and well connected by gene flow, facilitating the transmission and maintenance of the virus, whereas those in the H and nonendemic …

Occurrence and prevalence of bot flies, Metacuterebra apicalis (Diptera: Cuterebridae), in rodents of cerrado from central Brazil.

The occurrence and prevalence of Metacuterebra apicalis (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in natural populations of Oryzomys subflavus, Bolomys lasiurus, and Thalpomys cerradensis (Rodentia: Muridae) from August 1990 to July 1992 in the cerrado, a common savanna-like vegetation type of central Brazil, are reported. An increase in bot infection in the 3 rodent species between October 1991 and July 1992 without correlation to precipitation was detected. The prevalence was lower than in neotropical forest formations. Mean intensity was 1.3 bots (range 1-2) for T. cerradensis and 1 bot for B. lasiurus and O

Cryptosporidiosis in a cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus).

Cryptosporidiosis, previously unreported in cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus), was observed in one of nine cotton rats from Pryor, Oklahoma (USA). Infection was confined to the large intestine. Microscopically, numerous cryptosporidians measuring 2 to 3 microns in diameter were intimately associated with the luminal surface of colonic and rectal mucosae. The affected lamina propria of the large intestine was diffusely infiltrated by eosinophils, lymphocytes and macrophages. Ultrastructurally, numerous trophozoites and a single schizont were observed. Microvilli were displaced by the presence of

Modelling relative abundance of Oligoryzomys flavescens, an Orthohantavirus reservoir, in an endemic hantavirus pulmonary syndrome zone.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a zoonotic emerging infectious disease caused by New World orthohantaviruses (family Hantaviridae) hosted by rodents of the family Cricetidae. In Argentina, one of its main hosts is the sigmodontine rodent Oligoryzomys flavescens, a widely distributed mouse of the Pampas, Delta and Espinal ecoregions of central-east Argentina. Because the abundance of the reservoir and its proportion in the rodent community affects both virus prevalence and human exposure risk, its estimation throughout its known geographical distribution is of key importance for the desi

Morphology of the Oligoryzomys nigripes respiratory system.

Rodents are important in the transmission of infectious diseases that affect the respiratory tract, including simple infections and those caused by specific pathogens. These animals are natural reservoirs of zoonoses that cause many public health diseases. Basic knowledge on the morphology of these animals is important as basic research is useful for applied studies, such as the development of clinical, therapeutic, surgical and clinical models. Morphological data of respiratory tract in Oligoryzomys nigripes are absent in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a morph

Characterisation of the vascular pathology in Sigmodon hispidus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) following experimental infection with Angiostrongylus costaricensis (Nematoda: Metastrongylidae).

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode that causes human abdominal angiostrongyliasis, a disease found mainly in Latin American countries and particularly in Brazil and Costa Rica. Its life cycle involves exploitation of both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. Its natural reservoir is a vertebrate host, the cotton rat Sigmodon hispidus. The adult worms live in the ileo-colic branches of the upper mesenteric artery of S. hispidus, causing periarteritis. However, there is a lack of data on the development of vasculitis in the course of infection. OBJECTIVE: To describe the hist

Using the Specialization Framework to Determine Degree of Dietary Specialization in a Herbivorous Woodrat.

To be considered a dietary specialist, mammalian herbivores must consume large quantities of a plant species considered "difficult" with respect to nutrient or toxin content, and possess specialized adaptations to deal with plant defensive compounds or low nutritional content. Populations of Neotoma lepida in the Great Basin consume Juniperus osteosperma, a plant heavily defended by terpenes, but a detailed dietary analysis of this population is lacking. Therefore, we investigated the extent of dietary specialization in this species in comparison with the better-studied specialist species, N.

Detection of coccidioidal antibodies in serum of a small rodent community in Baja California, Mexico.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) represents a serious threat to inhabitants of endemic areas of North America. Despite successful clinical isolations of the fungal etiological agent, Coccidioides spp., the screening of environmental samples has had low effectiveness, mainly because of the poor characterization of Coccidioides ecological niche. We explored Valle de las Palmas, Baja California, Mexico, a highly endemic area near the U.S.-Mexico border, where we previously detected Coccidioides via culture-independent molecular methods. By testing the serum from 40-trapped rodents with ELISA, we

A new species of Trichuris (Nematoda: Trichuridae) from Phyllotini rodents in Argentina.

A new species of Trichuris is described. Trichuris pardinasi n. sp. was recovered from Phyllotis xanthopygus Waterhouse (Rodentia: Muridae: Phyllotini) in Sierra de la Ventana, Buenos Aires Province, and Pampa de Achala, Córdoba Province (Argentina). This is the first record of Trichuris parasitizing Phyllotini rodents. The new species can be differentiated from the other 10 species parasitizing rodents from South America by the absence of the spicular tube, spicular sheath with spines uniformly distributed, the length of spicule, the J-shaped proximal cloacal tube, and the nonprotrusive vulva

Relative utilization of reptiles and rodents as hosts by immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in the coastal plain of North Carolina, USA.

The interaction of immature black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, with reptiles and rodents was investigated in various woodland habitats in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Reptiles were sampled from April 1 to September 30, 1991. No ticks were found on 95 specimens representing 16 species of snakes. Ticks were found on 54 (36.7%) of 147 lizards. I. scapularis was the only tick recovered from lizards. Some lizards were collected in drift fence traps each month of the study except August. Capture rates averaged one lizard per 16 trap-days. Larvae and nymphs of I. scapularis were removed f
