Normative surface skin temperature changes due to blood redistribution: A prospective study.

The continuing development and manufacture of infrared devices, together with improvements in thermal body mapping techniques have simplified surface skin thermography which is being used more extensively than ever before. Normative thermography data, however, remains incomplete. A normative blood redistribution range of skin temperatures was established for use as a reference for laboratory infrared thermography (IT), thermal body mapping, and mass fever screenings. 500 healthy volunteers participated in this prospective study. To determine the maximum range of the skin temperature changes du…

Sacral Skin Temperature Assessed by Thermal Imaging: Role of Patient Vascular Attributes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that temperature differentials measured by thermal imaging of sacral versus a remote skin area in critically ill patients differentiate those with significant vascular disease and risk for pressure injury of the sacral area. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 100 patients (58 men, 42 women) with mean ± SD ages of 70.4 ± 14.4 and 74.0 ± 14.5 years, respectively, who were admitted to a cardiovascular intermediate care unit or a neurosurgical intensive care unit in the southeastern region of

Facial cold-induced vasodilation and skin temperature during exposure to cold wind.

One purpose of this study was to characterize the facial skin temperature and cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response of 12 subjects (six males and six females) during exposure to cold wind (i.e., -10 to 10 degrees C; 2, 5, and 8 m/s wind speed). This study found that at each wind speed, facial skin temperature decreased as ambient temperature decreased. The percentage of subjects showing facial CIVD decreased significantly at an ambient temperature above -10 degrees C. A similar CIVD percentage was observed between 0 degrees C dry and 10 degrees C wet (face sprayed with fine water mist) at …

Effect of skin temperature on platelet function in patients undergoing extracorporeal bypass.

Thirty-seven patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass operations were studied to assess the effect of skin temperature on platelet function. Differences in skin temperature between the two arms were created during bypass, at the completion of bypass, and at 2 and 24 hours after the completion of bypass. In each of 37 patients the temperature of one arm was increased with a water-filled blanket set at 40 degrees C. In 11 of these patients the other arm was allowed to equilibrate with the environment, and in the other 26 patients the arm was cooled with ice. Except for the differences in local…

Effect of cold ambient temperature on heat flux, skin temperature, and thermal sensation at different body parts in elite biathletes.

INTRODUCTION: When exercising in the cold, optimizing thermoregulation is essential to maintain performance. However, no study has investigated thermal parameters with wearable-based measurements in a field setting among elite Nordic skiers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the thermal response and sensation measured at different body parts during exercise in a cold environment in biathletes. METHODS: Thirteen Swiss national team biathletes (6 females, 7 males) performed two skiing bouts in the skating technique on two consecutive days (ambient temperature: -3.74 ± 2.32 °C) at 78 ± 4% of

Accuracy of skin temperature over carotid artery in estimation of core temperature in infants and young children during general anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Core temperature monitoring is essential in children under general anaesthesia as they are more susceptible to hypothermia. We aimed to use skin temperature over the carotid artery (Tsk-carotid) with correction factors (Cf) to estimate core temperature. Primary outcome measure was to assess the sensitivity of Tsk-carotid with Cf for detecting hypothermia. Secondary outcome measure was to assess the specificity of Tsk-carotid with Cf for detecting hypothermia. METHODS: First consecutive 50 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in modelling group and next…

Theoretical Design of Smart Bionic Skins with Self-Adaptive Temperature Regulation.

Thermal management presents a significant challenge in electric design, particularly in densely packed electronic systems. This study proposes a theoretical model for radiative bionic skin that emulates human skin, enabling the self-adaptive modulation of the thermal exhaustion rate to maintain homeostasis for objects covered by the skin in fluctuating thermal environments. The proposed artificial skin consists of phase change material (VO2) nanoparticles embedded in a low-loss matrix situated on a metallic substrate with a minimal thickness of several micrometers. The findings from our theore

Infrared thermography for examination of skin temperature in the dorsal hand of office workers.

Reduced blood flow may contribute to the pathophysiology of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSD), such as tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The study objective was to characterize potential differences in cutaneous temperature, among three groups of office workers assessed by dynamic thermography following a 9-min typing challenge: those with UEMSD, with ( n=6) or without ( n=10) cold hands exacerbated by keyboard use, and control subjects ( n=12). Temperature images of the metacarpal region of the dorsal hand were obtained 1 min before typing, and during three 2-min sample p

The utility of skin surface temperature measurement in the prediction of diabetic foot ulceration.

AIM: Temperature is a marker of inflammation. Research has shown that by measuring skin surface temperature in those with a history of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU), tissue damage can be identified early and reduce rates of subsequent DFU. This study considered whether measuring skin surface temperature using infra-red thermometry can identify early tissue damage and inform clinical practice in a general population with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). METHOD: The data presented was taken from a prospective observational study of risk factors in patients with Diabetes. As part of this study, temperat

Skin temperature response to thermal stimulus in patients with hyperhidrosis: A comparative study.

Primary hyperhidrosis (HH), the excessive sweating exceeding physiological demand, has been associated to a complex dysfunction of the auton … ompared to a control group in order to investigate putative differences in blood flow assuming that skin temperature in glabrous (non-hairy) areas reflect the sympathetic tone in arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs). Infrared thermography images were obtained from a cohort of patients diagnosed with HH, followed at a hospital pediatric surgical department and to a sex …

Inhibition of Fungal Pathogens across Genotypes and Temperatures by Amphibian Skin Bacteria.

Symbiotic bacteria may dampen the impacts of infectious diseases on hosts by inhibiting pathogen growth. However, our understanding of the generality of pathogen inhibition by different bacterial taxa across pathogen genotypes and environmental conditions is limited. Bacterial inhibitory properties are of particular interest for the amphibian-killing fungal pathogens (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans), for which probiotic applications as conservation strategies have been proposed. We quantified the inhibition strength of five putatively B. dendrobatidis-inhi

The effects of sodium oxybate on core body and skin temperature regulation in narcolepsy.

Patients suffering from narcolepsy type 1 show altered skin temperatures, resembling the profile that is related to sleep onset in healthy controls. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of sodium oxybate, a widely used drug to treat narcolepsy, on the 24-h profiles of temperature and sleep-wakefulness in patients with narcolepsy and controls. Eight hypocretin-deficient male narcolepsy type 1 patients and eight healthy matched controls underwent temperature measurement of core body and proximal and distal skin twice, and the sleep-wake state for 24 h. After the baseline as…

The vulva skin microclimate: influence of panty liners on temperature, humidity and pH.

Many women use panty liners between menstrual periods. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of such products might influence the vulva skin. Twelve healthy women were studied on four occasions with three different product constructions and on one occasion without products. Temperature, surface wetness and surface pH were measured on vulva skin. Mean skin temperature when the women were wearing a conventional panty liner (with a non-breathable back sheet) was 35.9 degrees C, compared to 34.4 degrees C when wearing no panty liner at all (p < 0.01) and 34.5 degrees C when usin…
