Robust Scalable-Manufactured Smart Fabric Surfaces Based on Azobenzene-Containing Maleimide Copolymers for Rewritable Information Storage and Hydrogen Fluoride Visual Sensor.

Functionalized materials with reversible color switching are highly attractive in many application fields, especially as rewritable media for information storage. It is critical yet challenging to develop a cost-effective strategy for the fabrication of stimulus-responsive chromogenic systems. Herein, we present a versatile dip-coating approach to fabricate robust smart textile with acid/base-driven chromotropic capability. Owing to the introduction of novel maleimide-based copolymers bearing azobenzene derivative moieties, smart textiles possess rapid color switching between yellow and orange

Biotemplated Fabrication of a Multifunctional Superwettable Shape Memory Film for Wearable Sensing Electronics and Smart Liquid Droplet Manipulation.

Wearable superwettable surfaces with dynamic tunable wettability and self-healability are promising for advanced wearable electronics, whereas have been rarely reported. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic shape memory film (SSMF) with switchable surface wettability and high strain sensitivity has been conveniently fabricated. The surface topography of the SSMF can be finely adjusted by a reversible stretching (bending)/recovery way, which makes it feasible to control the surface-switchable adhesive superhydrophobicity by simple body movements, demonstrating great advantages in selective dropl

Lung Biopsy Tract Sealant and Fiducial Marker Based on a Hydrogel/Shape Memory Polymer Foam Composite With Multimodal Contrast.

Lung tissue biopsies can result in a collapsed lung in the patient via leakage of air (pneumothorax) from an open biopsy tract. To reduce the risk of pneumothorax, clinicians will implant a sealant to prevent leakage of air from the tract. However, current technologies used in the clinic have been proven to be ineffective in preventing pneumothorax and do not have any imaging contrast for visualization of the device and tissue of interest in post-op imaging. We have previously developed a biopsy tract plug based on a shape memory polymer foam and poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel composite. Here,

Peripheral Designed Indigo Bola-Amphiphiles for Supramolecular Assembled Nanoarchitectonics in Aqueous Media.

Indigo, an ancient natural dye, featured excellent biodegradability to advance in sustainable polymer. Indigo amphiphiles can pave a way for sustainable supramolecular polymers in aqueous media for potential biomedical functional materials. However, contemporary indigo amphiphiles supramolecular commonly assemble into low aspect ratio nanostructures, which hampers the macroscopic soft scaffolds fabrications and smart functional material applications. In this study, we report a novel peripheral designed indigo bola-amphiphiles (IBAs), which assemble into high aspect ratio supramolecular nanofib

Simple synthesis of smart magnetically driven fibrous films for remote controllable oil removal.

Inspired by the marine mussel adhesive protein, smart, magnetically controllable, oil adsorption nanofibrous materials were successfully fabricated in this research. Taking advantage of the properties of dopamine whose molecular structure mimics the single unit of the marine mussel adhesive protein and can be polymerized in alkaline solution forming a "glue" layer on many kinds of material surfaces, magnetic iron(II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were easily and robustly anchored on to electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) fibrous films. After fluorination, the as-prepared hierarchical stru

From nature-inspired electron acceptors to BioAIE materials with polarity- and polymorphism-dependence for anti-counterfeiting.

Organic optical functional materials show immense potential in smart materials, bioimaging, and theranostics. Despite their widespread utility, most photofunctional materials are principally derived from petrochemical sources, facing limitations in sustainability and monotonous skeletal structure. Nature-derived compounds offer unique molecular scaffolds that can inspire the design of innovative optical functional materials in addition to renewability and sustainability. Herein, we report the rational design of a novel biomass-based electron acceptor, dehydroabietic acid quinoxaline (DAQx), de…

Smart Biomaterials for Bone Regeneration: From Microenvironmental Modulation to Personalized Therapy.

The rapid evolution of smart biomaterials has opened new therapeutic avenues for complex bone defects, non-union fractures, and post-tumor resection reconstruction. Conventional bone substitutes often suffer from insufficient bioactivity, mechanical mismatch, and a lack of capacity to modulate the healing microenvironment. In contrast, smart biomaterials can dynamically adjust their physicochemical properties in response to external stimuli (light, electricity, magnetic fields, or mechanical forces) or internal cues (ROS, pH, or enzyme activity), enabling precise control over cellular behavior
