Polymorphonuclear leukocyte random migration and chemotaxis in psoriatic and healthy adult smokers and non-smokers.

Random migration and chemotactic responsiveness of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) from psoriatic and control smokers and non-smokers were studied in vitro and in vivo. In vivo, but not in vitro, PMNs from psoriatic smokers responded to a significantly greater degree to a standard chemotaxin than did PMNs from psoriatic non-smokers, control smokers and control non-smokers. This suggests that smoking has a selective effect on psoriatic PMNs. The possible relevance of this to the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris and to palmoplantar pustulosis is discussed.

Bronchiolitis in young female smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a growing concern among young women. However, the pulmonary effects of smoking in young female smokers in their 20's are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether young female smokers demonstrate smoking-related lung abnormalities such as bronchiolitis in their 20's. METHODS: We recruited young females (20-30 yr) from Izmir, Turkey; 29 smokers and 31 lifetime non-smokers. They were all asymptomatic. All subjects performed complete lung function measurements and underwent thoracic computed tomography (CT) scanning at suspended full inspirati…

Legionnaires disease in cannabis smokers.

Tobacco smoking is a well-recognized risk factor for Legionnaires disease. However, it may be potentiated by cannabis use, as there is strong evidence that Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol impairs immune functions in vitro and in vivo. We report herein two out of three cases of severe Legionnaires disease in three men with no overt comorbid illnesses, aged 38, 28, and 48 years, respectively. All of them were heavy cigarette and cannabis smokers.

Pulmonary edema in cocaine smokers.

Cocaine smoking can cause a number of medical complications. Pneumomediastinum and pneumothorax due to barotrauma have been the most common radiographic abnormalities reported in the medical literature. The hospital records of five patients with pulmonary edema who smoked cocaine just before admission were reviewed. Except for cocaine abuse no other possible cause for the pulmonary edema was found. Although chest radiographic abnormalities in these patients are uncommon, these cases are reported to inform the radiologist of this possible complication of cocaine smoking. The presence of pulmona

A network analysis of appetite and dietary behaviour patterns: differences between smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is associated with differences in appetite and dietary behaviours, but how these behaviours are interrelated within smokers and non-smokers remains unclear. This study used network analysis to compare group-specific associations of appetite and dietary behaviour patterns in Chinese adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of the 2023 Psychological and Behavioural Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) was conducted, including 30,054 adults (4,938 current smokers and 25,116 non-smokers). Appetite and dietary behaviour variables, along with sociodemographic and psycho…

Physical and mental health status of former smokers and non-smokers patients with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 70% individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are lifetime tobacco smokers, a major modifiable risk factor for morbidity. However, quitting smoking is rarely proposed to individuals with BD, mainly because of fear of unfavorable metabolic or psychiatric changes. Evaluating the physical and mental impact of tobacco cessation is primordial. The aim of this study was to characterize the psychiatric and nonpsychiatric correlates of tobacco smoking status (never- vs. current vs. former smokers) in individuals with BD. METHODS: 3860 individuals with ascertained BD recruited in the ne…

Expression of tight junction proteins in smokers and non-smokers with generalized Stage III periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin (Occ), and tricellulin (Tric) in periodontitis, as well as their alterations due to smoking. BACKGROUND: Tight junctions (TJ), which consist of transmembrane and cytoplasmic scaffolding proteins, connect the epithelial cells of the periodontium. Occ, claudins, junctional adhesion molecules, and Tric are transmembrane TJ proteins found at the cell membrane. The transmembrane TJ proteins and the intracellular cytoskeleton are directly linked b

Salivary-soluble CD44 levels in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the most important environmental risk factor for periodontal disease. Elevated levels of serum-soluble CD44 (sCD44) have been detected in smokers and also have been recognized as a diagnostic marker in some smoking-induced diseases. The present study investigates the salivary sCD44 profiles of smokers and non-smokers with and without chronic periodontitis in response to scaling and root planing (SRP). METHODS: The study included 44 subjects divided into two groups: 22 patients with chronic periodontitis and 22 periodontally healthy subjects. Both groups were equally sub…

Bronchial mucosal dendritic cells in smokers and ex-smokers with COPD: an electron microscopic study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial mucosal dendritic cells (DCs) initiate and regulate immune responses to inhaled antigens, viruses and bacteria. Currently, little is known of their numbers in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While reductions in their numbers have been reported recently in smokers with asthma, nothing is known of the effects of cigarette smoking on bronchial DCs in COPD. The present study compares DC numbers in smokers and ex-smokers with COPD. METHODS: Endobronchial biopsies were obtained from 15 patients with moderate to severe COPD (10 current smokers with m…

Bronchus associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) in human lung: its distribution in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Bronchus associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) is a normal component of the lung's immune system in many animals and may be analogous to gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). This study aimed at assessing the nature and extent of BALT in human lung and determining whether its expression is induced within the human airway in response to smoking. METHODS: Paraffin embedded, formalin fixed full thickness bronchial wall sections were examined from 31 whole lung specimens derived from both smokers and non-smokers. Samples were taken from throughout the bronchial tree to include main stem …

Self-discontinuity, smoker and ex-smoker identity, and smoking relapse: A multilevel longitudinal study.

The present study examined longitudinal associations between smoking-related self-discontinuity (i.e. the perception that quitting smoking has disrupted the stability of one's self-concept over time), smoker and ex-smoker identity, and smoking relapse. We tested a mediation model in which increases in self-discontinuity were expected to increase relapse risk through concurrent and prospective increases in smoker identity and decreases in ex-smoker identity. The model was evaluated in a four-wave longitudinal study conducted over 1 year among former smokers who had quit within the previous 5 ye…

Vaginal cells of smokers are more resistant to human papillomavirus infection than that of non-smokers.

To evaluate effect of HPV and smoking on DNA double-strand breaks in vaginal samples, vaginal specimens collected from participants (n=76) were classified based on HPV and smoking status, and DNA double-strand breaks measured using comet assay. Mean tail length (31.2±18.7μm) and tail moment (2.4±2.8 arbitrary units) for HPV-positive patients were lower (p<0.001) compared with HPV-negative patients (61.7±22.6μm; 8.7±4.9AU). Never-smokers were found to have a higher level (p<0.001) of double-strand breaks (57.7±24.5μm, 7.5±5.5AU) compared with ever smokers (35.3±21.9μm; 3.4±3.7AU). Among HPV inf…
