BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a herpesvirus linked to nine different human tumors and lymphoproliferative disorders. Immunosuppression promotes EBV-driven malignancies. Vulvar smooth muscle tumors have been evaluated using site-specific (1979 and 1996 Vulvar Criteria) or Uterine Criteria. We compared the performance of 3 classification systems for predicting clinical behavior in the largest series of 35 such tumors to date. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) promotes the development of undifferentiated carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract and different types of lymphomas. This ability of tumorigenesis is heightened in many immunocompromised patients who have an increased incidence of lymphoproliferative disorders. The virus also induces smooth muscle proliferation, and those occurring following transplantation are designated as EBV-associated post-transplant smooth muscle tumors.
