Acute acalculous cholecystitis: a rare complication of snake bite.

Snake bite is an environmental and occupational hazard in many tropical and subtropical countries. It demands a high level of knowledge and skill in managing the envenomation syndrome. Herein, we describe a rare case of acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) that developed in a 36-year-old man after an Indian cobra (Naja naja) bite in the absence of any other predisposing factors for AAC. The probable mechanisms for the occurrence of AAC have been highlighted. Recognizing the possibility of such a complication after envenomation will definitely aid in early diagnosis and, subsequently, a better

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a snake bite victim: a case report.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy occurs in patients with severe emotional or physiologic stress. The prognosis is usually favorable, and the left ventricular wall motion dyskinesis normalizes within days to weeks. In this paper we report a case of snake bite complicated by takotsubo cardiomyopathy. We advise physicians to consider not only cardioinhibitory effect of snake venom but also takotsubo cardiomyopathy as a differential diagnosis if the patient develops cardiac dysfunction following snake bite.

A case report of scrotal gangrene from snake bite.

A case of snake bite of the scrotum in a 43-year-old male Fulani farmer cum herdsman is presented. Gangrene of the scrotum developed 4 days after the bite together with an increase in size of the scrotum to about 59cm in circumference. The patient received polyvalent snake anti venom almost 10 hours after the bite. Surgery to excise the gangrenous part, together with multiple longitudinal skin incisions of scrotum and penis were carried out The scrotal size reduced to almost half of the morbid size within 48 hours of surgery.

Snake bite in Australia: first aid and envenomation management.

Australia is inhabited by a large variety of snakes, including some of the most poisonous in the world. Sightings are regular, and the incidence of snake bite is estimated to be several thousand a year. A bite does not necessarily result in envenomation occurring, however there are at least 300 snakebites a year requiring treatment of envenomation, with between 1 and 4 fatalities every year. The incidence of fatalities from snake bite has increased over recent years. The explanation for this is unclear, but possible reasons include the urban sprawl, and a delay in application of appropriate fi

[Bites by snakes in the genus Bothrops: a series of 3,139 cases].

Medical records of 3,139 patients bitten by Bothrops snakes and attended at Vital Brazil Hospital (HVB) from 1981 to 1990 were reviewed. They were more frequent in males (75.7%). In 1,412 cases (45.0%) the snake was classified by species, and 1,376 were B. jararaca, 20 B. jararacussu, 11 B. neuwiedi, 2 B. moojeni, 2 B. alternatus e 1 B. pradoi. The most frequent bitten anatomic regions were: foot (47.5%) and hand (21.3%). Tourniquet was used in 38.2% of the cases and its frequency fell down during the study period (p < 0.05). The clinical features at the bite site were: pain (95.6%), swelling

Snake-bite-induced acute renal failure in India.

Acute renal failure complicates the course in 5% to 30% of victims of severe viper poisoning. No consensus exists on the single mechanism causing acute renal failure after viper bite. It is known, however, that viper venom induces several clinical abnormalities that favor the development of acute renal failure. These alterations include a varying degree of bleeding, hypotension, circulatory collapse, intravascular hemolysis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation with or without microangiopathy. A direct cytotoxic action of snake venom on the kidney is suspected, but convincing evidence is

[First aid and treatment of bites by snakes of the genus Vipera].

The amount of injected snake venom, the seriousness of the poisoning, the local and general clinical manifestations are influenced by several causes, which are analysed here. The most recent discoveries suggest the tight binding the bitten limb, extending the bandages as high as possible and applying a splint to the limb, in the first aid. The main steps of treatment, the laboratory tests, which may help the physician to follow the course of the poisoning, are then reported.

Prolonged defibrination after a bite from a 'nonvenomous' snake.

The distinction between venomous, potentially dangerous snakes and snakes considered to be harmless to humans is not always clear. A man was bitten by an assumed harmless pet snake, Rhabdophis subminatus (the red neck keelback), that had been obtained from a pet store. The patient experienced a severe coagulopathy with life-threatening hemorrhage unresponsive to transfusion. Since this snake frequently is sold legally in the United States, we wish to alert the medical community to its potential danger and to discuss the pathophysiological mechanism by which the coagulopathy was produced.

Hydrocephalus in snake bite: a rare manifestation with review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Snake bites are pretty common in the rural farming population of India. Approximately 300 species of snakes are considered medically significant by the WHO. Snake bites can be venomous or non-venomous. The toxins present in the saliva of the snake are called venom, which can cause detrimental effects on the human body, the reason being multiple enzymes and molecules that act on various tissues of the human body. The toxin can be neurotoxins or hematotoxins, or it can also have a mixed effect as well. Intracranial manifestations due to snake bites are not quite common. They may have…

Erythema Nodosum Triggered by a Bite From a Copperhead Snake.

Erythema nodosum (EN) is a form of septal panniculitis that can occur secondary to multiple etiologies including inflammatory disorders, infections, or medications. We describe a 42-year-old woman who developed tender, erythematous, subcutaneous nodules persisting for 4 months following a copperhead snakebite. The diagnosis of EN was confirmed via histopathology, and the patient was treated with colchicine. Physicians should be aware of possible etiologies of EN to evaluate patients who present with new-onset tender subcutaneous nodules. Additionally, physicians should understand the various c

Hemorrhagic Stroke Revealing a Snake Bite: A Case Report.

In Morocco, envenomations caused by viper bites and scorpion stings are frequent and associated with high lethality. It occurs mainly during the summer season with a peak between June and August. It is a medical emergency requiring intensive care. It is a life-threatening disease mainly due to the systemic hemorrhagic syndrome. Here, we present the clinical course of a patient in his 50s who suffered a snakebite and describe the neurological sequelae. The patient was admitted to the emergency room in a state of unconsciousness with gangrene on the right foot. An emergency brain scan showed men

Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation due to Venomous Snake Bite.

Snake bites are common all around the world with a great prevalence in South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Although they are associated with common complications such as local swelling, bleeding at site of bite, coagulopathy, etc., few rare cardiac complications such as myocardial infarctions and arrhythmias have also been described in literature. The following is a case report of a patient who had a snake bite with a Russell's viper which resulted in atrial fibrillation, which resolved on treatment with anti snake venom.

The North-South divide in snake bite envenomation in India.

Snake bite envenomations are common in rural areas and the incidence peaks during monsoons in India. Prominent venomous species have been traditionally labeled as the 'big four' that includes Cobra, Krait, Russel's viper and Saw scaled viper. Systematic attempts for identification and classification of prevalent snakes in various states of India are missing till now and there is no concrete data on this aspect. The published literature however shows that some species of snakes are more prevalent in a particular region than the other parts of India e.g. Saw scaled vipers in Rajasthan. We review
