[The course after amputation of upper extremities with special reference to the use of prostheses and social conditions].

Sixty-six patients with upper limb amputations were followed-up in their homes. The object of this article was to assess the course as regards the prosthesis, the extent to which this was employed, and to investigate the factors which influence the type of prosthesis and the social conditions of the patient. The amputees were divided into four groups. Twenty-six employed an active prosthesis for more than eight hours daily, six for less than eight hours daily, 16 employed passive prostheses and 18 did not employ prostheses. 65% of the amputations were performed on account of accidents. A group…

Laboratory conditions matter: social housing in male and female laboratory mice in a multicenter study approach.

Despite numerous studies and literature reviews, the social housing of laboratory mice is still under debate. Aggression and social stress can lead to physiological and behavioral alterations, especially in male mice, whereas single housing is a potential source of discomfort, particularly in female mice. This multicenter study aimed to assess the impact of single versus group housing on severity in both sexes and to examine whether a general recommendation could be made. C57BL/6NRj mice from the same litters of a commercial breeder were housed either singly or in groups of four across four di

Decomposing socioeconomic differences in self-rated health and healthcare expenditure by chronic conditions and social determinants.

BACKGROUND: Lower socioeconomic status is associated with lower self-rated health and higher healthcare expenditure. This study identifies which chronic conditions and social determinants contribute most to socioeconomic differences in self-rated health and healthcare expenditure. METHODS: Registry and survey data combining 3 socioeconomic indicators (income, education, and financial welfare), 26 social determinants, 20 chronic conditions, age, sex, self-rated health, and healthcare expenditure for 135,183 Dutch individuals aged 25-65, were linked at individual level. Social Relationships and Onset of Functional Limitation among Older Adults with Chronic Conditions: Does gender matter?

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between social relationships and physical functioning among community-dwelling older adults with chronic conditions. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaires were distributed and collected between 2014 and 2017 from participants ≥65 years old. The Index of Social Interaction was used to evaluate social relationships and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) subscale of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence was used to examine functional status. RESULTS: A total of 422 participants (19

Housing conditions during self-administration determine motivation for cocaine in mice following chronic social defeat stress.

RATIONALE: Stress exposure has a lasting impact on motivated behavior and can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities for developing a substance use disorder. Several models have been developed to examine how stressful experiences shape drug reward. These range from locomotor sensitization and conditioned place preference to the propensity for drug self-administration or responding to drug-predictive cues. While self-administration studies are considered to have more translational relevance, most of the studies to date have been conducted in rats. Further, many self-administration studies are cond

Impact of secondary health conditions on social role participation for a long-term physical disability cohort.

For people living with long-term physical disability (LTPD) social participation may involve managing physical impairments and secondary health conditions (SHCs) that are not due to the pathophysiology of the LTPD diagnosis itself. Prior research found a negative relationship between SHCs and participation in social roles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). We expand on this research by investigating the influence of SHCs on participation in social roles for people with one of four LTPDs, controlling for co-variates. We (1) evaluated the associations between SHCs and participation in soci

Psychological and social factors in undergoing reconstructive surgery among individuals with craniofacial conditions: an exploratory study.

Objective : Reconstructive surgery to improve psychological well-being is commonly offered to children with craniofacial conditions. Few studies have explored the challenges of reconstructive surgery beyond the physical risks: poor treatment outcomes, infection, brain damage, and death. This qualitative study aims to understand the psychological and social implications such interventions can have for individuals with craniofacial conditions. Design : A total of 38 individuals between the ages of 12 and 61 with such craniofacial conditions as Sturge-Weber syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Mö

Life course social and health conditions linked to frailty in Latin American older men and women.

BACKGROUND: Gender, social conditions, and health throughout the life course affect functional health in later life. This article addresses two specific hypotheses: i) life-course social and health conditions are associated with frailty; and ii) differential exposure and/or vulnerability of women and men to life-course conditions may account for gender differences in frailty. METHODS: Data originated from a cross-national survey of older adults living in five large Latin American cities. Frailty was defined as the presence of three or more of five criteria: unintentional weight loss (10 pound…

[Hepatitis C virus infections among persons attending special clinics dealing with problems related to social conditions].

We have studied the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibodies among 526 persons who attended an HIV diagnostic and counselling clinic and a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Oslo, Norway, during a 4-month period in early 1990. Possible risk factors for contracting hepatitis C virus infection were analysed and compared with results of the anti-hepatitis C virus test. The over-all prevalence rate of positive anti-hepatitis C virus tests was 7%. The prevalence rate was highest, 70%, among intravenous drug users (26/37). When intravenous drug users were excluded, only 2% of the remainin

The Prevalence of Co-Occurring Conditions and an Exploration of Social Factors Influencing Health in Down Syndrome.

Measuring health, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in Down syndrome (DS) was recently achieved through creation of a new health measure. However, additional information on health-related medical topics and how health measurement varies in demographic groups from that cohort has not been presented. We surveyed caregivers of individuals age 0-21 with Down syndrome (DS) from a national sample about the health of their son or daughter with DS as part of a broader study to create a valid, reliable health measure in DS. I

Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t

Social cognition and bulimic symptoms in male undergraduate students: The conditional effect of emotion dysregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Research demonstrates associations between poor social cognition and eating disorder (ED) pathology. Moreover, research shows that individuals with EDs struggle with emotion regulation. The present study replicates and extends the literature on social cognition and ED pathology, which previously focused largely on symptoms of anorexia nervosa among women while the present study focuses on symptoms of bulimia nervosa among undergraduate men. Further, this study tests the hypothesis that better emotion regulation mitigates the association between social cognition and ED pathology. ME

Perspectives of older adults with a chronic condition on functioning, social participation and health: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Problems with mobility, functioning and social participation make living independently difficult for frail older adults. To continue living independently, therapy adherence is a prerequisite. The causes for non-adherence among older adults are multiple and complex, which is why insight into older adults' perspectives regarding their functioning is an essential factor to increase therapy adherence. This study investigates the perspectives of older adults on their functioning, social participation and health, and the factors influencing these elements. METHODS: We conducted a qualit

People with activity limitations' perceptions of their health condition and their relationships with social participation and experienced autonomy.

BACKGROUND: People with activity limitations participate less in society, which may be due to both societal barriers and personal factors. The aim of this study was to examine the role of one specific personal factor, namely the perceptions that people have of their health condition. We hypothesized that perceptions of more personal control and less negative consequences increase the likelihood of participation in social activities and of experiencing autonomy in participation. METHODS: Survey data of 1681 people with activity limitations participating in a Dutch nationwide panel-study were a

Social aversive conditioning in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis and with psychosis: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition and emotion processing are compromised in schizophrenia. Disruptions in these domains may also be present during the psychosis-risk state. Aversive conditioning is an established translational research paradigm to investigate affective reactivity and learning. Using an aversive conditioning ERP paradigm with social cues, we examined whether psychosis patients and at-risk youths differentially respond to aversively conditioned faces. METHODS: Participants (ages 10-30) were enrolled into three demographically-matched groups: clinical risk for psychosis (CR, n = 32),

Indomethacin blocks the increased conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine induced by repeated social defeat.

It is well established that repeated social defeat stress can induce negative long-term consequences such as increased anxiety-like behavior and enhances the reinforcing effect of psychostimulants in rodents. In the current study, we evaluated how the immune system may play a role in these long-term effects of stress. A total of 148 OF1 mice were divided into different experimental groups according to stress condition (exploration or social defeat) and pre-treatment (saline, 5 or 10 mg/kg of the anti-inflammatory indomethacin) before each social defeat or exploration episode. Three weeks after

Kamishoyosan reduces conditioned fear-induced freezing behavior in socially isolated ovariectomized rats.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of kamishoyosan (KSS) on conditioned fear-induced freezing in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Socially isolated OVX rats showed the longest freezing time among the following four groups: group-housed sham-operated (Sham), isolated Sham, group-housed OVX, and isolated OVX rats. Repeated oral administration of KSS (30-300 mg/kg) reduced conditioned fear-induced freezing in socially isolated OVX rats. The reduction of freezing by KSS was reversed by flumazenil (3 mg/kg) and bicuculline (3 mg/kg). These findings suggest that the GABAA-benzodiazepine rece

Prediction of Prevalent Cardiovascular Disease Using Social, Environmental, and Behavioral Factors: A Vital Conditions Framework Approach.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. We examined whether a model that classifies prevalent CVD using clinical risk factor precursors (social, environmental, and behavioral factors), age, and sex, organized according to the Vital Conditions for Health framework, demonstrates good discrimination and calibration. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the 2021 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) dataset (N = 18,435 adults). Cardiovascular disease prevalence was defined using self-reporte

Experiences of Social Relationships for Adults Living With Multiple Long-Term Conditions: A Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Social relationships are important for self-management and outcomes of multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). Previous research indicates MLTC negatively impacts social relationships and people living with MLTC do not feel adequately supported to manage their health. However, there is limited understanding of the processes and contextual factors that influence social relationships in the context of MLTC. This study explored experiences of social relationships for adults living with MLTC to improve understanding of their social relationship needs. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone

Associations between constructs related to social relationships and mental health conditions and symptoms: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognised as prevalent among people with mental health problems, and as potential targets for interventions to improve quality of life and outcomes, as well as for preventive strategies. Understanding the relationship between quality and quantity of social relationships and a range of mental health conditions is a helpful step towards development of such interventions. PURPOSE: Our aim was to give an overview of associations between constructs related to social relationships (including loneliness and social isolation) and diagnosed
