Integrated assessment of environmental infrastructural and social risks for urban public safety.

Urban public safety is shaped by the interaction of environmental, infrastructural, and social risks that often overlap across rapidly urbanizing regions. This study develops an integrated framework combining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), and machine learning models to assess composite urban risk. Using spatial datasets on land surface temperature, air quality, drainage, building conditions, demographics, and crime from the selected metropolitan region, the study constructs risk indicators and evaluates cross-domain interactions. Study Protocol: Homelessness and Health: Integrating Structural, Social, and Behavioral Pathways.

This protocol paper describes the methods of a multi-year study examining individual, community, and structural-level influences on health among people experiencing homelessness in a mid-sized Oregon city. We draw on biocultural theory and method to examine three distinct social ecologies of homelessness in the study setting: unsheltered homelessness, temporarily sheltered homelessness, and permanent supportive or transitional housing. Our mixed-method approach incorporates epidemiological-style questionnaires, biomarkers sampled via finger prick blood and hair, and in-depth case study intervi

Understanding Social Camouflaging in Autistic Adults: Integrating Cognitive and Psychosocial Predictors.

Camouflaging refers to strategies used by autistic individuals to mask traits and adapt to neurotypical norms. Beyond socio-cognitive abilities, recent work suggests that camouflaging is also shaped by psychosocial factors. This study tested an integrative, prediction-oriented model of camouflaging. We hypothesized that higher levels of camouflaging would be associated with socio-cognitive functioning, perceived social misfit, mental health, and lower autism acceptance, and that an integrative model combining these factors would predict individual differences in camouflaging. Participants were

Social disconnection integrates genetic and proteomic risks in suicidal ideation and depression.

Suicidal ideation (SI) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are complex psychiatric conditions arising from the interplay of genetic liability, molecular processes, and psychosocial factors. While these dimensions have been extensively studied in isolation, their joint contribution to SI and MDD remains unclear. This study integrates multi-modal data to elucidate these synergistic effects and develop robust models for individual-level risk stratification. Leveraging longitudinal multi-modal data from 13,085 UK Biobank participants, we integrated genomic, proteomic, and social connection profile

Integrating social and neurobehavioral understandings of epilepsy stigma into personalized care strategies.

There is a bidirectional relationship between epilepsy-related stigma (ERS) and medical outcomes. ERS negatively influences treatment adherence and disease management, whereas insufficient medical improvement can, in turn, exacerbate ERS. ERS remains a significant challenge, often leading to delays in diagnosis, limiting appropriate therapies, and creating difficulties in social integration for patients with epilepsy. Even when treatment successfully achieves seizure cessation, failure to address ERS can limit patient social integration, reduce quality of life, and hamper long-term psychosocia…

[Albinism: an integrative review of its epidemiological, symbolic and social rights aspects].

Social invisibility represents a real challenge for people with albinism in obtaining appropriate health care. The aim of this research was to analytically encompass what the scientific literature reveals on the subject, by means of an integrative literature review in the SciELO database. Nineteen original articles were included, available in full and covering topics such as: culture; social, family and economic aspects; human rights and life experiences. The results were categorized into epidemiological characteristics, symbolic perspectives and social rights. It was found that epidemiologica

New Directions in Geroscience: Integrating Social and Behavioral Drivers of Biological Aging.

The "geroscience hypothesis" posits that slowing the physiological processes of aging would lead to delayed disease onset and longer healthspan and lifespan. This shift from a focus on solely treating existing disease to slowing the aging process is a shift toward prevention, including a focus on risk factors found in the social environment. Although geroscience traditionally has focused on the molecular and cellular drivers of biological aging, more fundamental causes of aging may be found in the social exposome-the complex array of human social environmental exposures that shape health and d

A review and agenda for integrated disease models including social and behavioural factors.

Social and behavioural factors are critical to the emergence, spread and containment of human disease, and are key determinants of the course, duration and outcomes of disease outbreaks. Recent epidemics of Ebola in West Africa and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) globally have reinforced the importance of developing infectious disease models that better integrate social and behavioural dynamics and theories. Meanwhile, the growth in capacity, coordination and prioritization of social science research and of risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) practice within the current pand

Homeless persons' experiences of health- and social care: A systematic integrative review.

Homelessness is associated with high risks of morbidity and premature death. Many interventions aimed to improve physical and mental health exist, but do not reach the population of persons experiencing homelessness. Despite the widely reported unmet healthcare needs, more information about the barriers and facilitators that affect access to care for persons experiencing homelessness is needed. A systematic integrative review was performed to explore experiences and needs of health- and social care for persons experiencing homelessness. The following databases were searched: AMED, ASSIA, Acade

Integrating Social Media Monitoring Into Public Health Emergency Response Operations.

Social media monitoring for public health emergency response and recovery is an essential response capability for any health department. The value of social media for emergency response lies not only in the capacity to rapidly communicate official and critical incident information, but as a rich source of incoming data that can be gathered to inform leadership decision-making. Social media monitoring is a function that can be formally integrated into the Incident Command System of any response agency. The approach to planning and required resources, such as staffing, logistics, and technology,

Integrating intention and context: assessing social cognition in adults with Asperger syndrome.

Deficits in social cognition are an evident clinical feature of the Asperger syndrome (AS). Although many daily life problems of adults with AS are related to social cognition impairments, few studies have conducted comprehensive research in this area. The current study examined multiple domains of social cognition in adults with AS assessing the executive functions (EF) and exploring the intra and inter-individual variability. Fifteen adult's diagnosed with AS and 15 matched healthy controls completed a battery of social cognition tasks. This battery included measures of emotion recognition,

Predictors of gains in social functioning after cognitive remediation in schizophrenia: Results from the multicenter ISST (Integrated Social Cognition and Social Skills Therapy) trial.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is an evidence-based behavioral intervention that enhances functional outcomes in schizophrenia patients by improving cognition. However, not all patients benefit equally from CRT, and predictors of real-world functional improvement are poorly understood. This study aimed to identify patient-related baseline predictors of functional improvement by evaluating two distinct CRT approaches targeting different types of cognition: social cognition (Integrated Social Cognition and Social Skills Training, ISST) and neurocognition (Neurocognitive Remediati

Sleep disturbance and longitudinal risk of inflammation: Moderating influences of social integration and social isolation in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Both sleep disturbance and social isolation increase the risk for morbidity and mortality. Systemic inflammation is suspected as a potential mechanism of these associations. However, the complex relationships between sleep disturbance, social isolation, and inflammation have not been examined in a population-based longitudinal study. This study examined the longitudinal association between sleep disturbance and systemic inflammation, and the moderating effects of social isolation on this association. The CARDIA study is a population-based longitudinal study conducted in four US cities. Sleep d

Diverse social environments and 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of historically excluded racial/ethnic older adults: A latent class analysis of social integration.

PURPOSE: The association between social integration and mortality in older adults from historically excluded groups may not align with the patterns observed in predominately white samples. We modeled latent groups of social integration and their association with 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of older adults from historically excluded racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: In a sub-sample of a national cohort study of older adults, we used latent class analysis to model social integration using ten item indicators spanning couple status, network characteristics, and neighborhood and communit…

The role of housing stability in predicting social capital: Exploring social support and psychological integration as mediators for individuals with histories of homelessness and vulnerable housing.

Social capital is a collective asset important for individual and population well-being. Individuals who experience homelessness may face barriers in accessing social capital due to health challenges, small social networks, and social exclusion. Data from a 4-year longitudinal study was used to determine if housing stability predicted greater social capital and if this relationship was mediated by social support and psychological integration for a sample of 855 homeless and vulnerably housed participants living in three Canadian cities. Findings showed that housing stability was not associated

The Social-Psychological Consequences of COVID-19: An Integrative Review and Research Agenda.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed profound social-psychological vulnerabilities and strengths across societies worldwide. Beyond its immediate health implications, the pandemic has triggered a wave of mental health issues, disrupted social cohesion, and challenged community resilience. This paper synthesizes the current literature, critically discusses five recent studies as part of the Special Issue "Mental Health Consequences of COVID-19: The Role of Social Determinants", and articulates an agenda for future research within a social-psychological framework. Moving beyond mere negative effec

Integrating social determinants of health and genetic risk in disease risk models.

Complex diseases are shaped by heritable factors and non-genetic environmental, behavioral, and social determinants of health, but these are rarely modeled together. The growing availability of large-scale, multimodal biobanks creates new opportunities to integrate diverse data types into more accurate disease risk models. Here, we apply multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) to over 100 environmental, behavioral, and social variables from the All of Us biobank (n = 413,457 individuals) to generate low-dimensional embeddings that quantify non-genetic risk for six common chronic conditions: ast

The Impacts of Binge Drinking and Hangover on the Social Brain: An Integrative Narrative Review.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time, whereas hangover is a cluster of unpleasant mental symptoms and physical signs that typically manifest the next day after binge drinking. Binge drinking is a prevalent pattern of alcohol consumption, especially in adolescents, with dualistic effects on social behavior. While some studies demonstrate that a single episode of binge drinking enhances sociability and preference for social novelty, other studies indicate that repeating cycles of binge drinking and hangover can lead to persistent negative aff
