Measures of religiosity are linked to health outcomes, possibly indicating mediating effects of associated psychological and social factors. We examined cross-sectional data from 92,539 postmenopausal participants of the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study who responded to questions on religious service attendance, psychological characteristics, and social support domains. We present odds ratios from multiple logistic regressions controlling for covariates. Women attending services weekly during the past month, compared with those not attending at all in the past month, were less lik

BACKGROUND: Participation after stroke is shaped by motor recovery and contextual factors within the ICF framework. Although social support is considered an important environmental factor, its association with participation-related health outcomes in chronic stroke remains insufficiently understood.
AIMS: To examine the associations of motor recovery and perceived social support with participation-related outcomes in individuals with chronic stroke and to provide descriptive comparisons with healthy controls.
METHODS: Forty community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke (≥3 months post-s

In the context of population aging and the active aging strategy, the snowbirds model of seasonal residence has emerged as a new form of inter-regional older adult care. This study employs a mixed-methods design to investigate the relationship between older adult snowbirds' sport participation and their social integration experiences in the destination. Study 1 is qualitative and interpretive, involving in-depth interviews. Based on qualitative findings and literature review, this study conceptualized social identity as one key psychological dimension within the broader process of social integ

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Population aging has heightened the importance of ensuring older adults' equal participation in social life and access to public services. Public transportation is central to mobility, independence, and social participation in later life, yet older adults may face age-based discrimination in everyday public settings. This study explored older adults' experiences of ageism in public transportation and examined how these experiences affect mobility and social participation.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study used a qualitative design in Türkiye. Semistructured int…

PURPOSE: Participation in sports contributes substantially to children's physical health, psychological well-being, and cognitive development. Despite national initiatives to increase youth sports participation, inequities remain. Socioeconomic disadvantage, racial and ethnic minority status, and other social determinants of health (SDOH) are associated with lower engagement. However, most research addresses isolated factors rather than cumulative neighborhood-level SDOH. This study identified neighborhood SDOH profiles and examined their associations with sports participation.

BACKGROUND: Members of racial and ethnic minority groups with multiple sclerosis (MS) often face increased stigma due to their marginalized identities and lack of coping resources, leading to negative social consequences such as unfair evaluations, exclusion, and limited opportunities.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this cross-sectional study was to assess how stigma is associated with social participation in members of racial and ethnic minority groups with MS.
METHODS: A total of 224 members of racial and ethnic minority groups with MS participated in the study. Hierarchical regression analysis wa…

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) frequently experience invisible symptoms, including cognitive impairment, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and psychosocial factors such as stigma, which can substantially affect social role participation (SRP). These factors are often under-recognized in clinical care despite their functional impact.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the unique contributions of invisible MS-related symptoms to SRP after accounting for demographic characteristics and objective cognitive performance.
METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 434 PwMS was recruited from a large ou

As researchers, advocates, and policymakers continue to emphasize community participation for people with serious mental illness (SMI), it is important to understand and strengthen the natural ties that these individuals have in the community. This study investigated how the social support provided by natural supports (i.e., relationships that occur in everyday life, such as friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors) relates to community participation. It was hypothesized that natural supports would be positively associated with community participation. Forty-eight participants comple

Autistic adults often report high levels of social anxiety and significant life impacts from this anxiety on well-being and functioning. Although cognitive-behavioural therapy in group settings has been adapted for autistic populations, there is a paucity of research exploring how autistic individuals experience CBT interventions. This qualitative study investigated autistic adults' experiences of a modified cognitive-behavioural therapy group programme for social anxiety. Twenty-seven autistic participants were recruited through clinical services and community outreach. Following the interven

AIMS: By the end of 2022, an estimated 108.4 million individuals worldwide experienced forced displacement. Identifying modifiable factors associated with the mental illness of refugees is crucial for promoting successful integration and developing effective health policies. This study aims to examine the associations between the changes in the diversity of social participation and psychological distress among refugees throughout the resettlement process, specifically focusing on gender differences.
METHODS: Utilizing data from three waves of a longitudinal, nationally representative cohort s…

BACKGROUND: Low social participation is a potentially modifiable risk factor for cognitive deterioration in the general population and related to lower quality of life (QoL). We aimed to find out whether social participation is linked to cognitive deterioration and QoL for people with borderline intellectual functioning and mild intellectual disability.
METHOD: We used data from the National Child Development Study, consisting of people born during one week in 1958, to compare midlife social participation in people with mild intellectual disability, borderline intellectual functioning, and wi…

This study used in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of women with disabilities in Burkina Faso to explore how discrimination based on gender and disability intersects and influences exposure to violence, as well as the impact of such discrimination on social participation, a theme barely studied in West Africa. The study thematically analysed the narratives of 35 women with disabilities - including mental, physical, auditory and visual - (age range = 15-53), rural and urban that were collected through four focus groups and eight case stories of rape survivors. As presented in the statem…

People with mobility impairments (MIs; use assistive devices to ambulate) have twice the smoking prevalence versus the general population. A Facebook intervention could improve reach to smokers with MIs, but use and patterns of use are unknown. The study examined: (a) Facebook use and relationship with Facebook-based social support and (b) whether Facebook use differs by motivation to quit smoking. Participants (N = 510; 56.3% female, mean age = 42.4 years) were recruited via a recruitment company to complete a one-time online survey assessing motivation to quit within 30 days, Facebook use (F

Social Role Participation Questionnaire (SRPQ) is used to evaluate the social participation with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Although the SRPQ has English and Dutch versions, there is no Chinese version even though China has the largest population of patients with AS. The objective of our study was to translate the SRPQ into Chinese version and assess its reliability and validity in Chinese patients with AS. The C-SRPQ was developed in a five-step translation and cross-cultural adaptation procedure. A total of 105 patients with AS were recruited during the time from September 2014 to June 201…

BACKGROUND: Patients' satisfaction with methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is a key measure of treatment quality. The main objective of the present study is to identify independent factors that contribute significantly to satisfaction with MMT.
METHOD: Participants were a representative sample of methadone-maintained patients (n=123) from the region of La Rioja. Satisfaction with MMT was assessed with the Verona Service Satisfaction Scale for Methadone Treatment (VSSS-MT), and mental health status with the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28).
