Trajectories of community fire adaptation: Social diversity, social fragmentation and the temporal evolution of wildfire action.

There is increasing acknowledgement that the unique characteristics (i.e., social contexts) of human communities influence variable means for adapting to the growing risks posed by wildland fire. However, there has been less work documenting how community social contexts evolve over time, and the ways they might influence collective mitigations pursued in partnership with professionals when addressing wildfire planning. We conducted 73 semi-structured interviews with 112 residents, emergency management professionals, government officials and members of community organizations in two Nevada Cou

The Healthy Neighborhood, Healthy Families Initiative.

: media-1vid110.1542/5799877332001PEDS-VA_2018-0261Video Abstract : Extreme poverty and the associated effects, such as blight, housing insecurity, and crime, have debilitating consequences on child development. Health care institutions are largely ineffective in changing those outcomes 1 child at a time. We present a case study of a hospital treating the adjacent neighborhood as a "patient" to address social determinants. The community represents a largely impoverished and housing-unstable neighborhood that underwent an assessment by community partners and treatment with a multifaceted housin

An evaluation of a multidisciplinary care planning tool for people with intellectual disabilities and behaviours of concern.

BackgroundMultidisciplinary care planning for people with intellectual disabilities who engage in behaviours of concern (BoC) is challenging and complex. Effective collaborative understanding and action planning across all stakeholders is essential. Cornwall's Adult Community Learning Disability Team developed a care planning tool (Connect Behaviour) using contemporary evidence and best practice. Connect Behaviour is designed to facilitate care planning by collaborative and enhanced shared understanding and is also available as an interactive web-based tool.AimTo evaluate Connect behaviour usi

Social Accountability in Medical Student Scholarly Projects: A Call for Intentional Integration.

BACKGROUND: While social accountability is integrated into clinical training at many institutions, its role in medical scholarly projects remains unexplored. While much has been studied on social accountability in medical education and service, little is known about how it is approached in research. Therefore, we examined whether community partnerships were included in student plans, the community's role in the research process, and health equity outcomes as measures of social accountability. METHODS: We approached this observational study in two stages. In stage 1, we reviewed medical studen

Factors associated with advance care planning among older women in Southwest Florida.

As the nation's population continues to age, many older women will face care needs that can be anticipated in advance. However, little is known about the advance care plans of older women and the characteristics of those who plan. This study utilized a stratified random sampling design to survey older women (n = 124) in the state of Florida regarding their attitudes toward future care and planning behavior in social-environmental, health, and financial domains. Regression analyses were conducted to determine factors most predictive of attitudes toward future care and planning behavior by domai

Social work practice with childbirth-injured women in Nigeria.

Nigerian social workers in health care settings have been actively involved in the treatment of women in northern Nigeria who suffer from childbirth injury during obstructed labor. The patient population studied suffers from vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a debilitating and chronic condition whereby a woman leaks urine uncontrollably and experiences grave social consequences. Crisis intervention, social rehabilitation, fighting stigma, and discharge planning similar to the American professional model were functions of the social workers in addressing the needs of this patient population. Implica

Psychological health maintenance on Space Station Freedom.

The scheduling of crew rotations for up to 180 days on Space Station Freedom presents a special challenge for behavioral scientists who are tasked with providing psychological support for the crews, their families, and mission flight controllers. Preflight psychological support planning may minimize the negative impact of psychological and social issues on mission success, as well as assist NASA management in making real-time mission planning decisions in the event of a significant social event (for example, the death of a family member). During flight, the combined psychological, emotional, a

Reconciling recovery, personalisation and Housing First: integrating practice and outcome in the field of multiple exclusion homelessness.

'Recovery' is a key concept in the organisation and delivery of interdisciplinary support for people experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness (MEH, that is, situations where homelessness overlaps with a range of other complex problems such as mental health issues and drug and alcohol dependencies). At the level of individual support planning, practitioners are expected to 'work together' to motivate service users to make positive changes to their lives and to secure outcomes (results) such as employment and permanent accommodation. Drawing on the accounts of 34 (n = 34) people with first-h

Experiences among children and adolescents of living with spina bifida and their visions of the future.

Purpose Transitioning to independence may be problematic for persons with spina bifida (SB). Experiences of young persons with SB may provide insights into this group's needs for support. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate children's and adolescents' experiences of living with SB, their social and emotional adjustment, and their thoughts about becoming independent adults. Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young persons with SB (N = 8, age range 10-17 years). Social and emotional problems were assessed using Beck Youth Inventories. Issues emerging from the London Learning Disability Plan.

This article gives an overview of the draft of the London Learning Disability Plan developed by the Department of Health, Social Services Inspectorate and the National Health Service Executive. The London Plan is founded on a social model of disability in which there is not only a strong focus on health and social care, but also an integration with housing, education, employment, leisure and other relevant organizations. It advocates integrated commissioning and delivery of specialist learning disability services that will require both health services and nurses to change existing structures a

Unlimited Smartphone Data Plans in Older Adults With Data Deprivation: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The growth of mobile health has underscored the critical importance of equitable internet access in promoting healthy aging. Among older adults, particularly those in digitally underserved populations, access to mobile data is often limited due to affordability and technological barriers, leading to a phenomenon known as "data deprivation." This form of digital inequality limits the older adults' ability to participate in social, recreational, and community-based activities, which are protective against isolation and decline in later life. In South Korea, where unlimited smartphone

[Family size control in Morocco: a qualitative exploratory study among rural women].

OBJECTIVE: Although women play a central role in family planning, their ability to control their fertility is often influenced by social and relational factors. This study explores the knowledge, attitudes and practices of married women of childbearing age living in rural areas of Morocco regarding family planning and the contraceptive methods currently available. METHOD: In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with 49 married Moroccan women in a rural maternity ward during their postpartum period. Using open-ended questions, we examined their contraceptive practices, decision-making

Evaluating public health responses to reintroduced smallpox via dynamic, socially structured, and spatially distributed metapopulation models.

The risk of smallpox reintroduction has motivated preparations in potential target countries. After reproducing the spatiotemporal pattern after the 1972 importation into Yugoslavia via coupled, biologically realistic systems of ordinary differential equations, we developed dynamic population models with current US age distributions and typical spatially distributed social structures. Surveillance and containment (S&C) coupled with vaccination of 95% of hospital-based health care workers (HCWs) within 2 days after the first diagnosis (estimated to be 18 days after aerosol release) were modeled

Improving the quality of vascular surgical discharge planning in a hub centre.

Introduction Discharge planning improves patient outcomes, reduces hospital stay and readmission rates, and should involve a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. The efficacy of MDT meetings in discharge planning was examined, as well as reasons for delayed discharge among vascular surgical inpatients. Methods Dedicated weekly MDT meetings were held on the vascular ward in Royal Derby Hospital for three months. Each patient was presented to the discharge planning meeting and an expected date of discharge was decided prospectively. Patients who were discharged after this date were considered
