Active social engagement and health among older adults: assessing differences by cancer survivorship status.

INTRODUCTION: The number of older adults who are cancer survivors is rapidly growing. Evidence is needed to inform interventions to support successful aging among older adults (including older adult cancer survivors). Active engagement with life, that is, spending time with family and/or close friends, may be related to health outcomes, but this concept remains understudied. METHODS: We used survey data to assess active engagement among older adults (ages 50 + years) from seven mid-Atlantic US states (n = 2,914), and geocoded their residence to collect collected measures of community availabi

Hearing Status Affects Children's Emotion Understanding in Dynamic Social Situations: An Eye-Tracking Study.

OBJECTIVES: For children to understand the emotional behavior of others, the first two steps involve emotion encoding and emotion interpreting, according to the Social Information Processing model. Access to daily social interactions is prerequisite to a child acquiring these skills, and barriers to communication such as hearing loss impede this access. Therefore, it could be challenging for children with hearing loss to develop these two skills. The present study aimed to understand the effect of prelingual hearing loss on children's emotion understanding, by examining how they encode and int

From social status to emotions: Asymmetric contests predict emotional responses to victory and defeat.

Social status plays a key role in expressing different emotions. However, little is known about which mechanisms underlie the variability of emotional responses that are linked to social hierarchy. Status instability-a natural characteristic of hierarchies-can help to untangle the status-emotion relationship. Therefore, we verified whether the emotional expressions of fighters could be predicted by the degree of asymmetry in their fighting abilities during a contest. Emotional expressions upon the announcement of victory or defeat were evaluated using three different methods: nonverbal behavio…

Social Integration, Marital Status, and Ovarian Cancer Risk: A 20-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Low social integration and divorce/widowhood are chronic psychosocial stressors that may affect health. When assessed after cancer diagnosis, they have been associated with poorer survival, but their role in cancer development, particularly ovarian cancer (OvCA), is less understood. We investigated whether social integration and marital status were related to OvCA risk in a large population-based study. METHODS: Women from the Nurses' Health Study completed the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index and reported their marital status every 4 years starting in 1992 (N = 72,206), and were

Does THA Improve Social Status Among Turkish Women With Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

BACKGROUND: In traditional societies, patients who reach adulthood with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may be labeled "disabled" and may be considered "defective," causing them psychologic pain and problems with social interactions. In some patriarchal societies, women disproportionately experience these problems, because they may be seen as insufficient in terms of marriage and sexual intercourse owing to hip-related limitations, and they may be married through arranged marriages to people who also have disabilities. This patriarchal structure limits the ways women can engage in soc

Childhood language ability predicts intergenerational persistence and social mobility in socioeconomic status of adults.

This study examined early language abilities as a mediator of intergenerational socioeconomic status (SES). In a 30-year longitudinal study (N = 114, 98% White, 53% male, monolingual English speakers), participants were tracked from kindergarten to age 36 with measures of language, nonverbal IQ, academic achievement, and SES. Early language ability, independent of IQ, explained nearly a quarter (24%) of adult SES variance through two pathways. The persistence pathway (7.8%) showed language mediated 66% of intergenerational SES transmission. The mobility pathway (16.1%) showed language predicte

"Associations between maternal perceptions of social support and adolescent weight status: A longitudinal analysis".

Social support is a well-established predictor of improved physical health outcomes among adults. Establishing whether maternal social support may have an inter-generational positive impact on their child's physical health will provide important information for developing potential interventions and policies. Elevated body mass index (BMI) is one indicator of child health that is linked to increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other morbidities later in life. There is some evidence that maternal social support is associated with improved child and adolescent weight status; however, no

Food insecurity, social needs, and smoking status among patients in a county hospital system.

Tobacco use in the U.S. is increasingly concentrated among populations with socioeconomic disadvantages such as food insecurity. Building on prior studies showing that food insecurity increases odds of cigarette smoking, the current study sought to examine how food insecurity and other social needs, particularly financial strain, transportation barriers, and housing/utility insecurity, were associated with smoking status among adult patients seen in a county hospital system. We analyzed data from the electronic health record of patients from The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), cover

Subjective social status, COVID-19 health worries, and mental health symptoms in perinatal women.

Pregnant women and those who have recently given birth are considered an at-risk population during the COVID-19 pandemic with regards to the impact of both general stress and pandemic-related stressors. The extent to which subjective social status (SSS), one's perception of relative standing compared to others in a social hierarchy, might mitigate the effects of COVID-19-related health worries on mental health has not yet been reported, despite SSS often outperforming socioeconomic status as a predictor of various health outcomes including depression. This cross-sectional survey study tested t…

Association Between Marital Status and Depressive Symptoms Among Family Caregivers in Japan: The Moderating Roles of Subjective Economic Status and Social Support.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the main effect of marital status on depressive symptoms and the interactions of marital status with subjective economic status and social support among Japanese family caregivers. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among 1,260 primary family caregivers aged 20 years or older, who provided care to their biological mother or father aged 65 or older and certified as requiring long-term care under Japan's long-term care insurance system. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Japanese version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies De

Profiles of Social Status Among at-Risk Adolescents in a Residential Setting: A Person-Centered Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents often care about their social status which may be influenced by various personality and behavioral characteristics. This study used a person-centered approach to examine intrapersonal (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, self-esteem) and interpersonal (i.e., aggression, prosocial behavior) factors associated with how adolescents are perceived by peers. METHODS: Participants were 256 adolescents (61% of participants identified as male), ages 16-19, attending a 22-week quasi-military residential program. Self-report and peer-nomination data were collected. RESULTS: Latent …

Exploring the status of online social support for older adults with cancer: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The estimated number of new cases among older adults with cancer has been increasing. Considering the decrease in social networks as adults age, their need for social support is often unmet. Notably, an increasing number of older adults with cancer have access to social support through online technologies, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened the need for online social support. Little is known, however, about the extent to which online social support for older people with cancer has developed. This scoping review aims to explore the developments in online soci

The impact on social capital of mobility disability and weight status: the Stockholm Public Health Cohort.

BACKGROUND: People with mobility disability are more often overweight or obese and have lower social capital than people without mobility disability. It is unclear whether having a combination of mobility disability and overweight or obesity furthers negative development of social capital over time. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether there were differences in social capital between normal-weight, overweight and obese people with or without mobility disability over a period of 8 years. METHODS: We included 14,481 individuals (18-64 at baseline) from the Stockholm Public Health Cohort that started

Sexual attraction status and adolescent suicide proneness: the roles of hopelessness, depression, and social support.

This study explored the relationship between sexual attraction status (same-sex, both-sex, and opposite-sex) and suicidal behavior in a diverse sample of adolescents (N = 1,533 youth). Adolescents with attractions to both sexes reported greater suicide proneness, recent and lifetime suicidal ideation, and past suicide attempts than those with exclusively opposite-sex attractions; individuals reporting same-sex attractions generally demonstrated moderate elevations on these variables. As hypothesized, both hopelessness and depression mediated the relationship between sexual attraction status an

Latent variable model for suicide risk in relation to social capital and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence on the association between suicide outcomes (ideation, attempts, self-harm) and social capital. This paper investigates such associations using a structural equation model based on health survey data, and allowing for both individual and contextual risk factors. METHODS: Social capital and other major risk factors for suicide, namely socioeconomic status and social isolation, are modelled as latent variables that are proxied (or measured) by observed indicators or question responses for survey subjects. These latent scales predict suicide risk in the struc

A trouble shared is a trouble halved: social context and status affect pain in mouse dyads.

In mice behavioral response to pain is modulated by social status. Recently, social context also has been shown to affect pain sensitivity. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of interaction between status and social context in dyads of outbred CD-1 male mice in which the dominance/submission relationship was stable. Mice were assessed for pain response in a formalin (1% concentration) test either alone (individually tested-IT), or in pairs of dominant and subordinate mice. In the latter condition, they could be either both injected (BI) or only one injected (OI) with formalin. W…

The influence of subjective social status on vulnerability to postpartum smoking among young pregnant women.

OBJECTIVES: Associations between subjective social status, a subjective measure of socioeconomic status, and predictors of risk for postpartum smoking were examined among 123 pregnant women (aged 18-24 years) who stopped smoking because of pregnancy. The goal was to identify how subjective social status might influence the risk for postpartum smoking and to elucidate targets for intervention. METHODS: We used multiple regression equations to examine the predictive relations between subjective social status and tobacco dependence, self-rated likelihood of postpartum smoking, confidence, tempta…
