Exploring social support for eating disorders in Indigenous contexts.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of cultural and ethnic background. However, culturally situated understandings of eating disorders are important for optimizing care. Moreover, social support is widely recognized as a key component in the recovery of eating disorders. Established Euro-Western treatment models generally conceptualize social support as the role family and close friends play in providing emotional and practical support during a loved one's recovery. Indigenous perspectives of social support, which may include connection to ancestors, community, non-human…

The effect of online social support on experimental pain.

Ample evidence shows that in-person social support can alleviate both acute and chronic pain complaints. However, less is known about the effectiveness of online social support. Disparities in availability of and access to in-person social support could make online social support a promising and cost-effective alternative. To this end we aimed to compare the effects of online versus in-person social support on pain induced with a cold-pressor task (CPT). Specifically, 62 pain-free female participants immersed their feet in cold water (1) alone, (2) in the physical presence of a supportive othe…

Social support among women with genital fistula in Uganda.

Resulting from prolonged obstructed labour, iatrogenic and traumatic aetiologies, female genital fistula in low-resource settings causes a significant physical and psychosocial burden. Social support is an important mechanism to build resilience to health challenges. This study aimed to understand the role of emotional, informational and tangible social support for Ugandan women affected by fistula. Thirty-three participants who had had fistula surgery 6-24 months prior to the study were recruited from Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. Data from in-depth interviews (n = 16) and 4 focus group…

Association of Social Support With Brain Volume and Cognition.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive resilience refers to the general capacity of cognitive processes to be less susceptible to differences in brain structure from age- and disease-related changes. Studies suggest that supportive social networks reduce Alzheimer disease and related disorder (ADRD) risk by enhancing cognitive resilience, but data on specific social support mechanisms are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of individual forms of social support with a global neuroanatomical measure of early ADRD vulnerability and cognition. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cros…

Social support and sleep quality in older benzodiazepine users.

Objective: Benzodiazepines (BZD) are often prescribed to address sleep difficulties but many BZD users report a poor quality of sleep. Although social support was found to be associated with quality of sleep in a recent meta-analysis, this relationship was never studied in older BZD users. This study thus aims to examine how social support is associated with quality of sleep in older BZD users.Method: Seventy-two older adults (age 60-85) using BZD were recruited. Data was collected during the pre-test of the ''PASSE-60+; Support program for a successful withdrawal, NCT02281175'' study. Quality…

Cardiovascular responses to mental activation of social support schemas.

While perceived social support appears to be associated with buffered cardiovascular reactivity to short-term stressors, its impact on cardiovascular recovery is less clear. This relationship might be affected by trait hostility, with hostile individuals benefiting less from social support. However, despite the possibility that support provision might enhance well-being, limited empirical work has manipulated this in a laboratory context. The present study sought to investigate whether mentally activated support provision and support receipt influenced cardiovascular recovery from cognitive st…

Effect of social support on nocturnal blood pressure dipping.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if nocturnal blood pressure (BP) dipping among non-Hispanic blacks is influenced by social support. Non-Hispanic blacks have higher rates of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality from hypertension and are more likely to have ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) that remains high at night (nondipping). METHODS: A total of 68 non-Hispanic black normotensive and 13 untreated hypertensive participants (age 72 +/- 10 years, 48% female) free of clinical cardiovascular disease completed 24-hour ABP monitoring and a questionnaire that included a modified version of the CARDIA Stud…

Women living with HIV: disclosure, violence, and social support.

This paper describes the frequency of women's disclosure of their HIV status, examines the extent to which they experience adverse social and physical consequences when others learn they are infected, and analyzes correlates of these negative outcomes. There were 257 HIV-positive women between the ages of 18 and 44, recruited from HIV/AIDS primary care clinics and from community sites, who completed a face-to-face interview. Women in the sample were 33 years old on average; 92% were African-American; 54% had less than 12 years of education; 56% had used intravenous drugs; and 30% knew they wer

Experience of social support in rehabilitation: a phenomenological study.

The progressive muscular weakness brought on by muscular dystrophy causes the sufferer many problems in everyday life. Earlier studies in Sweden have shown that adults with hereditary muscular dystrophy often have difficulty in gaining access to rehabilitation. For this reason a special rehabilitation programme was drawn up and carried out, extending over a period of 18 months. The purpose of the study is to describe the participants' experience of social support in connection with the programme. Thirty-seven participants (21 women and 16 men) were interviewed. The analytical method was phenom…

Social support and depression in men during alcoholism treatment.

Psychiatric comorbidities have been shown to be important predictors of the outcome of alcoholism treatment. This study examines whether perceived lack of social support can be identified as an independent predictor of symptoms of depression experienced during alcoholism treatment over and above the effects of personality characteristics and the severity of alcohol and psychiatric history. We studied 189 alcoholic men in treatment at a rural midwestern Department of Veterans Affairs medical center. Multiple regression analyses found that reduced social support significantly predicted depressio…

Suitability of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support as a measure of functional social support among incarcerated adults with major depressive disorder.

The multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) is a 12-item measure of functional social support (SS); however, the psychometric properties of the MSPSS have not been evaluated in prisoners. We used measures of known-groups validity, convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency reliability and factor structure to assess the suitability of the MSPSS for measuring SS among 184 individuals in prison in the U.S., who were diagnosed with depression. The MSPSS was correlated with scores on scales measuring related constructs (i.e., loneliness), and uncorrelated with unr…
