The rate of appearance (entry) of 22Na into the posterior chamber of the eye was determined in eight dogs under control conditions and again after pretreatment with acetazolamide, 50 mg/kg i.v. In comparison with the paired controls, pretreatment with acetazolamide decreased the average rate of entry of 22Na by 29% during the first 3 minutes after the intravenous administration of a tracer dose of the isotope. To examine the renal handling of the trace element chromium, clearance studies were performed in pentobarbital sodium-anesthetized mongrel dogs following either gavage or intravenous administration of chromium-51(III) chloride. A commercially available system of caesium iodide crystal mini-detectors (Oakfield Instruments, Oxon, UK) was modified so that it was suitable for dual isotopic measurement of the plasma protein accumulation index (PPA)- a measure of pulmonary endothelial permeability. Global climate variations have intensified the transformation of salt lakes and saline-alkali playas in arid regions into major sources of saline-alkali dust storms, actively influencing atmospheric circulation and climate dynamics.
