Perceptual Classification of Motor Speech Disorders: The Role of Severity, Speech Task, and Listener's Expertise.

PURPOSE: The clinical diagnosis of motor speech disorders (MSDs) is mainly based on perceptual approaches. However, studies on perceptual classification of MSDs often indicate low classification accuracy. The aim of this study was to determine in a forced-choice dichotomous decision-making task (a) how accuracy of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in perceptually classifying apraxia of speech (AoS) and dysarthria is impacted by speech task, severity of MSD, and listener's expertise and (b) which perceptual features they use to classify. METHOD: Speech samples from 29 neurotypical speakers, …

Speech Perception Skills of Children With Speech Sound Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate whether preschool- and early school-age children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) have difficulties with speech perception. Method Systematic searching of 8 electronic databases identified 73 eligible studies across 71 articles examining the speech perception skills of children with SSDs. The findings and methodological characteristics of each study were reviewed, and the reporting of methodological information in each article was rated. A meta-analysis was conducted with studies that used the m

Stability and composition of functional synergies for speech movements in children with developmental speech disorders.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to investigate the consistency and composition of functional synergies for speech movements in children with developmental speech disorders. Kinematic data were collected on the reiterated productions of syllables spa(/spaː/) and paas(/paːs/) by 10 6- to 9-year-olds with developmental speech disorders (five with speech sound disorder [SSD] and five with subtype childhood apraxia of speech [CAS]) and six normally speaking children using electro-magnetic midsagittal articulography (EMMA). Results showed a higher variability of tongue tip movement trajectorie…

Articulatory disorders in speech among Finnish-speaking students according to age, sex, and speech therapy.

A group of Finnish-speaking students (n = 451) was examined clinically to study occurrence of articulatory disorders in speech, controlling for the possible effects of age, sex, and previous speech therapy. Distortions of the /s/ sound were found in 16%, of the /r/ sound in 3%, and of the /l/, /n/, or /d/ sounds in about 1% of the subjects; the rarest faultily produced sounds were usually combined with other articulatory disorders. According to fitted log-linear functions, age and sex were not related to prevalence of articulatory disorders in speech among young adults, while there was a tende

Part I: Speech Characteristics of the Disorder.

Practicing speech-language pathologists frequently ask about the existence of information regarding developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) that they can share with the parents of their clients and patients. Hoping to fill a need, a series of letters, addressed to the parent(s) of a child with DAS, has been written. These letters discuss such issues as the nature and causes of DAS, other problems often associated with the disorder, and the treatment of DAS. This initial letter discusses the characteristics involved in the disorder. Included with this letter is an appendix of publications that ma

Cantonese Oral and Speech Motor Assessment for Preschool Children With and Without Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: Oral and speech motor abilities are key components of assessments of Cantonese speakers with speech sound disorder (SSD), especially childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This study aims to investigate the oral and speech motor abilities of Cantonese preschool children with and without SSD using an adapted version of a popular English assessment protocol. METHOD: A total of 104 Cantonese-speaking children, aged between 3 and 5 years, were assigned to three main groups: typical development (TD), non-CAS SSD, and CAS. They were tested using the Cantonese Oral and Speech Motor Assessment (

Importance of copy number variants in childhood apraxia of speech and other speech sound disorders.

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a severe and rare form of speech sound disorder (SSD). CAS is typically sporadic, but may segregate in families with broader speech and language deficits. We hypothesize that genetic changes may be involved in the etiology of CAS. We conduct whole-genome sequencing in 27 families with CAS, 101 individuals in all. We identify 17 genomic regions including 19 unique copy number variants (CNVs). Three variants are shared across families, but the rest are unique; three events are de novo. In four families, siblings with milder phenotypes co-inherited the same CN

A Systematic Review of Online Speech Therapy Systems for Intervention in Childhood Speech Communication Disorders.

Currently, not all children that need speech therapy have access to a therapist. With the current international shortage of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), there is a demand for online tools to support SLPs with their daily tasks. Several online speech therapy (OST) systems have been designed and proposed in the literature; however, the implementation of these systems is lacking. The technical knowledge that is needed to use these programs is a challenge for SLPs. There has been limited effort to systematically identify, analyze and report the findings of prior studies. We provide the res

[Speech sound distortion of neuromotor speech disorders: a comparison between cerebral dysarthria and verbal apraxia].

Speech sound distortion is considered to be a salient feature of neuromotor speech disorders such as cerebellar dysarthria and apraxia of speech. The aim of this study was to compare the temporal and spatial aspects of speech of two persons with acquired cerebellar dysarthria and of one person with acquired apraxia of speech. Voice onset time of [d], duration of articulatory closure of [d], duration of [s] and [l], formants of [l] and the range of acoustic energy of [s] were analysed spectrographically in a number of utterances with various sound structures. The results indicated that spatial …

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Sensitivity to structure in the speech signal by children with speech sound disorder and reading disability.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and reading disability (RD) have poor phonological awareness, a problem believed to arise largely from deficits in processing the sensory information in speech, specifically individual acoustic cues. However, such cues are details of acoustic structure. Recent theories suggest that listeners also need to be able to integrate those details to perceive linguistically relevant form. This study examined abilities of children with SSD, RD, and SSD+RD not only to process acoustic cues but also to recover linguistically relevant form from the speech
