The spleen is a complex organ that is perfectly adapted to selectively filtering and destroying senescent red blood cells (RBCs), infectious microorganisms and Plasmodium-parasitized RBCs. Infection by malaria is the most common cause of spleen rupture and splenomegaly, albeit variably, a landmark of malaria infection. Here, the role of the spleen in malaria is reviewed with special emphasis in lessons learned from human infections and mouse models.

Accessory spleens (AS) may be formed during embryonic development when some of the cells from the developing spleen are deposited along the path from the midline, where the spleen forms, over to its final location on the left side of the abdomen. An accessory spleen is usually near the spleen's hilum, but it may be embedded partly or wholly in the tail of the pancreas. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and distribution of AS during routine forensic autopsies. AS were investigated in 720 consecutive autopsy cases. Fifty-four AS were found in 48 (6.7%) cases. AS were found i…

Wandering spleen is a rare condition defined as a mobile spleen only attached with its pedicle. It can be complicated by a volvulus, which is a surgical abdominal emergency. Preventing infarction is the aim of a prompt surgery that can preserve the spleen and then proceed to splenopexy. We report a rare case of torsion of a wandering spleen associated with a dolichosigmoοd.

The spleen is a parenchymatous organ located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, in the splenic lodge. The normal spleen is 10-12 cm long and 3-5 cm thick. The ultrasound examination of the spleen is better performed in a fasting patient, in supine or right lateral position, using an intercostal approach, with a 3.5 to 5 MHz transducer. Due to the high position of this organ, covered by the ribs, inviting the patient to take a deep breath could be useful.

A wide range of vascular disorders can affect the spleen. Although clinical presentation is often nonspecific, early diagnosis and treatment are mandatory in most conditions. Noninvasive imaging techniques are well suited to meet these objectives. Familiarity with normal macroscopic and microscopic vascular anatomy is a prerequisite to understand the pathophysiology of vascular disorders of the spleen. This article deals with diseases of the splenic vasculature (aneurysms, arteriovenous fistula, splenic vein thrombosis, collateral circulation in portal hypertension) as well as vascular disorde…

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumors are benign tumor lesions of an unknown etiology that can appear almost at any organ, sometimes along with infectious agens, like Epstein-Barr virus. They are extremely rare in the spleen, with less than 80 cases described in the world literature. It is a single, very rarely multinodal lesion. Middle aged patients are mostly affected. Symptoms are either absent or uncharacteristic, so that the tumors are discovered by chance or during investigations of other diseases.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 56-year-old woman in whom a nodal lesion of 2 cm in diameter …

This is a survey of normal variants and pathologic conditions involving the spleen and retroperitoneum. The study focuses on the various sonographic appearances of trauma, infection, and neoplasm involving these areas in an attempt to complement works dealing specifically with the pancreas, kidneys, and great vessels. Ultrasound-guided intervention (biopsy, drainage) is included.

The wandering spleen is caused by congenital absence of fixating ligaments or abnormally long ligaments. It is an uncommon clinical entity, which rarely affects children. The clinical presentation of wandering spleen is variable, but the most dangerous complication is splenic torsion. A 7 year-old boy presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. The abdominal ultrasound scan discovered spleen ischemia. Volvulus of the spleen was evoked. Laparotomy was carried out and the patient underwent splenectomy. In this case the anatomical means of spleen fixity were absent. Because wandering spleen is un…

We analyzed the efficacy of splenic irradiation in a population of patients with hematologic diseases. The records of the Radiation Oncology Division, Naval Medical Center San Diego were retrospectively reviewed for all patients treated with splenic irradiation (SI) between January 1, 1990 and March 1, 2001. The charts of 17 patients were identified: 5 patients had chronic myelogenous leukemia, 4 had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, 4 had idiopathic myelofibrosis, 2 had polycythemia vera, and 1 patient each had idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and acute myelogenous leukemia. Patient ages range

Infectious mononucleosis is an extremely common problem in the athletic population. "Mono" occurs in 3% of college students. Diagnosing infectious mononucleosis requires an understanding of the clinical features such as fever, lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, and splenomegaly, as well as laboratory findings. The time at which these clinical features and laboratory abnormalities develop is also important to understand. Splenomegaly is common, but splenic rupture is very rare. Whether an athlete may return to activity usually relates to the presence of splenomegaly and the duration of the illness.

The authors report a rare case of littoral hemangioma of the spleen (LHS) accompanied by a revision of the literature on the argument. A male 65-year-old patient was referred to their attention with suspected ultrasonographic diagnosis of lymphoma with a splenic localisation. The complete CT diagnosis led to suspected splenic angioma. During surgery, anatomopathological analysis of the biopsy revealed LHS. The pathological anatomy showed lesions ranging in size from small foci to large nodules which almost completely replaced the splenic parenchyma. These areas were made up of vascular canals …
