Over 25 years experience with fusidic acid in the treatment of bone and joint infections is reviewed. Fusidic acid, usually given concurrently with another antibiotic, has proved effective in a wide variety of staphylococcal infections, including acute osteomyelitis and septic arthritis. It is a valuable adjunct to surgery in patients with chronic osteomyelitis. Oral therapy is generally well tolerated, apart from gastrointestinal side effects in a small proportion of cases. Use of fusidic acid in other orthopaedic situations is considered in the light of recent information.

Snoek was implicated in the food poisoning of 2 people in Bloemfontein. The patients' symptoms and culture of snoek samples suggested Staphylococcus aureus as the causative agent. Enumeration of S. aureus by selective procedures gave counts of 200 000 per gram in snoek obtained from the patients and from the butchery supplying the snoek. Investigations indicated that the snoek was heavily contaminated with S. aureus before arrival at the butchery and that the organisms grew as a result of mishandling after processing.

The spread of Staphylococcus aureus was studied in three general surgical wards of identical design which consisted of a number of separate rooms, and the results were compared with those in the same unit previously studied, in subdivided wards elsewhere and in large open wards. The nasal carrier rate of Staph. aureus by patients rose during their stay in the ward, but its peak rate was comparable with minimum rates reported in other subdivided wards and was lower than in open wards.Staphylococcal sepsis rates were lower than in most open wards and were also much lower than those found previous

In the presence of numerous trigger factors contributing to the exposure of allergodermathosis, there is significant heterogeneity in the phenotypic manifestations of the disease, the severity of its course, as well as the co-morbidity and response to therapy. Objective - to assess the possibility of predicting the severity of allergodermathosis complicated by staphylococcal infection, taking into account the patients' clinical and medical history, bacteriological and immunological indicators. The study included 252 patients with allergodermathosis (95 with atopic dermatitis (AD) and 157 with

BACKGROUND: Linezolid and vancomycin are both recommended for the treatment of staphylococcal-associated central nervous system (CNS) infections. However, to date, no data are available comparing the outcomes of patients treated with vancomycin or linezolid for these infections. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of treatment failure and adverse events (AEs) associated with vancomycin and linezolid in staphylococcal-associated CNS infections.
METHODS: This retrospective monocentric observational study was conducted between 01/01/2015 and 31/12/2023. All patients with a confirm

BACKGROUND: The evidence supporting rifampin combination therapy in prosthetic joint infections (PJI) is limited due to the lack of controlled studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of adding rifampin to conventional antimicrobial therapy in early staphylococcal PJIs treated with debridement and retention of the implant (DAIR).
METHODS: In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, 99 patients with PJI after hip and knee arthroplasties were enrolled. They were randomly assigned to receive rifampin or not in addition to standard antimicrobial treatment with cloxacillin or

Delayed orthopedic joint prosthesis infections (DOJP-Is) due to staphylococci frequently result in prosthetic revision. Specific and noninvasive diagnostic tests are unavailable, and DOJP-Is are commonly diagnosed at advanced stages of disease. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect serum antibodies against staphylococcal slime polysaccharide antigens. Using a cutoff of 0.35 ELISA units, the test showed a specificity of 95.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 85.4 to 98.7%) and a sensitivity of 89.7% (71.5 to 97.3%) on a sample of 90 individuals.
