Impact of Bisphosphonate Therapy on Oral Health in Patients with Breast and Prostate Cancer and Bone Metastases: A Comprehensive Study.

This study investigates the impact of bisphosphonate therapy on the stomatognathic system in 80 patients with cancer of the breast and prostate with bone metastases. Bisphosphonates are integral for managing skeletal complications in these malignancies but are associated with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), affecting 0.8-18.5% of patients. BRONJ manifests with pain, neuropathy, tissue swelling, mucosal ulceration, tooth mobility, and abscesses, yet its pathogenesis remains elusive, complicating risk prediction. The research employed comprehensive dental and radiologica…

[Otological symptoms among patients with temporomandibular joint disorders].

Middle ear muscles have a common embryological and functional origin with masticatory and facial muscles. Therefore, symptoms referred to the ear may originate from the stomatognathic area. When a primary otological cause is discarded in the diagnostic work up for tinnitus, vertigo, hypoacousia, hyperacousia, ear pain or sensation of occluded ear, a temporomandibular joint dysfunction may be the cause of these symptoms. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is twice more common among women and has environmental, physiological and behavioral causes. Among patients with this dysfunction, the preva

EMG-assisted forward dynamics simulation of subject-specific mandible musculoskeletal system.

Assessment of mandibular dynamics is essential for examining stomatognathic functions, and many kinds of stomatognathic diseases, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and jaw tumors, require individual diagnosis and rehabilitation treatments. Musculoskeletal models of the mandible system provide an efficient tool for fulfilling these tasks, but most existing models are generic, without direct correlation to subject-specific data. For this reason, the objective of this study was to establish a subject-specific mandible modeling framework based on clinical measurements, including medic

Temporomandibular Joint and Otitis Media: A Narrative Review of Implications in Etiopathogenesis and Treatment.

Otitis media (OM) and its recurring (rAOM), effusive (OME), and chronic forms, represent a frequent clinical challenge. The middle ear, the mandible, and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) share several embryological and anatomical connections. Despite that, the role of mandibular malposition and TMJ dysfunction is frequently overlooked in the management of otitis media. In this narrative review, we present current evidence supporting the etiopathogenetic role of a dysfunctional stomatognathic system in the onset of OM and the effectiveness of orthognathic treatment in preventing rAOM and OME. …

Oro-dental findings in Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

The Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a human genetic disorder with an array of clinical features affecting many body systems. BBS is a pleiotropic disorder with mostly monogenic causes. It is also considered a primary ciliopathy syndrome. It is characterised by obesity, pigmentary retinopathy, polydactyly, mental deficiency and hypogonadism and recently a sixth feature, renal disease, has also been described. Since none of the diverse symptoms of BBS by itself is diagnostic of the disorder and many of the symptoms only become apparent over time, diagnosis of the BBS is often delayed until about

Teratomas of the head and neck.

Teratomas of the head and neck are uncommon. They are composed of tissues from all three germ layers with varying degrees of differentiation. They arise from pluripotent stem cells and ectopic embryonic nongerm cells. Head and neck teratomas most commonly emerge during the neonatal period and are associated with airway obstruction and high rates of mortality in untreated patients. The tumors are usually benign, but when found during adulthood, they have a high incidence of malignancy. The most common site of occurrence is the cervical region and the nasopharynx. We presented a rare case of ter

Problematic intubation in soldiers: are there predisposing factors?

Attempts by a combat medical officer to secure the airway of a multiple-injury patient in the field may frequently end in failure. The recurrence of such failures, despite Advanced Trauma Life Support training, is perplexing; therefore, we studied the prevalence of clinical criteria that could predispose active soldiers to difficult intubation. Such known anatomical features and the Mallampati classification were assessed by experts in 250 soldiers at a military outpatient clinic of the Israel Defense Forces. It was found that most soldiers had normal airways. Limitations of head and neck move

Longitudinal analysis of bite force and strength of orofacial tissues during orthodontic aligner treatment.

PURPOSE: Orthodontic aligners have introduced new approaches in orthodontics, but their effects on the stomatognathic system remain debated. This longitudinal study evaluated the maximum molar bite force and strength of orofacial tissues during orthodontic treatment with aligners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty individuals (16 women and 4 men) participated, with an average age of 30.8 ± 10.9 years, all having natural permanent dentition except for the third molars and no temporomandibular dysfunction. All participants were indicated for treatment with aligners and monitored over four timepoint…

Assessment of Thermal Influence on an Orthodontic System by Means of the Finite Element Method.

The development of the finite element method (FEM) combined block polynomial interpolation with the concepts of finite difference formats and the variation principle. Because of this combination, the FEM overcomes the shortcomings of traditional variation methods while maintaining the benefits of current variation methods and the flexibility of the finite difference method. As a result, the FEM is an advancement above the traditional variation methods. The purpose of this study is to experimentally highlight the thermal behavior of two stomatognathic systems, one a control and the other presen…

Use of light-cured resin to manufacture occlusal splints: report of two cases.

This article presents selected cases of patients with functional disorders of the stomatognathic system. This group of patients had a need to made different types of removable occlusal splints. In the past, occlusal appliances were made mostly using self-cured acrylate materials, which for many years had no replacements. The rapid development of dental materials technology led to creation of thermo-formable materials and resins, which can successfully replace traditional acrylic materials in daily clinical practice. A practical application of light-cured resin in the fabrication of the occlusa…

[Changes in temporomandibular joint functions in various general anesthesia procedures].

In a clinical study conducted in 1986 on 100 patients, we were able to demonstrate that intubation leads to the occurrence of temporary disturbances of the stomatognathic system. To verify these results, a double-blind study was conducted involving 140 patients of ASA groups I and II. Further acceptance criteria were: operation outside of the head and neck area, no throat pack or gastric tube, and the requirement of dental antagonists on the left and right side. Group composition: Group A: oral intubation with a laryngoscope (n = 50); Group B: nasal intubation using a fiberoptic endoscope (n =…
