This study reports for the first time the excellent nonvolatile and volatile digital memory characteristics of polymers bearing 2-pyrrolidone and succinimide moieties. A series of new polymers is synthesized from poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) and four alcohol derivatives with and without 2-pyrrolidone and succinimide moieties. A Pd-catalyzed asymmetric isomerization-hydroamidocarbonylation of amide-containing alkenes was developed, affording a variety of chiral α-alkyl succinimides in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivities. The key to success was introducing bulky 1-adamentyl P-substitution and 2,3,5,6-tetramethoxyphenyl group into the rigid P-chirogenic bisphosphine ligand to create stronger steric hinderance and deeper catalytic pocket. By this approach, regio- or stereo-convergent synthesis of enantiomeric succinimides from the mixture of olefin isomers was achieved.

Herein, an efficient, base catalyzed cascade vinylogous Michael/Michael cycloaddition reaction of α-alkylidene succinimides and oxindole-derived pyrazolones has been successfully developed. A variety of highly functionalized cyclopentanes fused with spirooxindoles were obtained in good yields, with excellent diastereoselectivities and exclusive vinylogous site-selectivities. This strategy represents the first example of α-alkylidene succinimides serving as nucleophilic reagents to trigger a vinylogous cascade reaction.

An enantioselective three-component reaction of vinyl diazosuccinimdes with alcohols and imines has been realized by a cooperative catalysis of Rh2(OAc)4 and a chiral phosphoric acid, leading to chiral 3,3-disubstituted succinimides in good to high yields with high to excellent enantioselectivity. Synthesis and physicochemical properties of new N-pyridyl derivatives of 3-phenyl and 3,3-diphenylsuccinimides (1-12) have been described. The obtained compounds were evaluated in respect of their anticonvulsant activity. The formation of aspartyl succinimide is a common post-translational modification of protein pharmaceuticals under acidic conditions. We present a method to detect and quantitate succinimide in intact protein via hydrazine trapping and chemical derivatization.
