OBJECTIVES: Prior research has found that insomnia symptoms and nightmares are associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and death by suicide. However, to the best of our knowledge, no research has examined the relation between insomnia symptoms, nightmares, and suicidal ideation in older adults. The current project aimed to fill this void by investigating the relation between insomnia symptoms, nightmares, and suicidal ideation in an older adult sample.
METHOD: The study utilized a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 81 older adult patients (age ≥ 65 years) recruited f

Huntington disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by cognitive impairments, motor abnormalities, and psychiatric disturbance. An increased risk for suicide has been documented. The majority of HD research has focused on cognitive and motor features of HD; the implications of psychiatric manifestations have received less consideration. Recent studies have sought to identify the stages of HD in which patients are at increased risk to experience suicidal ideation, though no study has examined possible risk factors for suicidality. The current study examines the presence of ps

This article assesses the psychosocial adjustment to illness and examines the relationship between adjustment and psychosocial and medical variables in 91 ambulatory HIV-infected patients. The 91 subjects were receiving ambulatory medical care in hospitals (Memorial Hospital, New York Hospital, and St. Vincent's Hospital) and in private medical consult (Gay Men's Health Crisis) in New York. The majority (74.5%) of subjects had AIDS. The sample was composed principally of white Roman Catholic homosexual men living alone. However, 49.5% were black or hispanic, 31.9% had intravenous drug use as t

OBJECTIVE: An initial finding of heightened risk of suicidal ideation or behavior among individuals in a random community sample who met diagnostic criteria for panic disorder or panic attacks was not replicated in later studies of both general and specific groups of psychiatric outpatients. The present study represented another effort to validate the finding.
METHOD: The participants included 209 outpatients who had attempted suicide or were at high risk for continued suicidal behavior or eventual suicide. All subjects were evaluated with a structured clinical interview for assigning DSM-III

This study examined the relationship of early parental loss to suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in a group of university students attending a university mental health clinic. Seventy-five subjects with a history of parental loss before the age of 16 were compared to a control group of 61 subjects from intact homes for the presence of suicidal ideation and overt suicidal behaviour. Subjects with a history of early loss demonstrated significantly more suicidal ideation and more had made suicide attempts than had subjects from intact homes, and this relationship was even more marked when th

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) in reducing anger and suicidal ideation among individuals with suicidal behavior.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was used, with 30 participants randomly assigned to an experimental or a medication-only control group. Participants, recently hospitalized in Kermanshah, Iran, because of suicide attempt, were assessed via the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 and the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation at baseline and posttreatment. Treatment began after group assignment.

OBJECTIVE: To examine sex-specific associations between non-cephalic pain and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in patients with migraine, controlling for depression and other risk factors for suicide.
BACKGROUND: In patients with migraine, co-occurring pain conditions are common and are associated with worse physical and psychosocial function, but the association with suicide has not been determined.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, we included 10,690 patients with migraine who were consecutively recruited from headache clinics. All participants provided information on sociod

OBJECTIVE: Rumination is often cited as a risk factor for suicide, yet few studies of rumination have utilized clinical samples, and no studies have examined its prospective association with suicide attempts. The purpose of this study was to examine concurrent and prospective associations of brooding and reflection (the two components of rumination) with suicide ideation and suicide attempts among a high-risk clinical sample.
METHOD: Participants were 286 adolescents and young adults (77% Caucasian, 59% female) aged 13-25 seeking psychiatric emergency services. A majority (71%) were presentin

The high mortality rate among drug users, which is partly due to the HIV epidemic and partly due to drug-related accidental deaths and suicides, presents a major public health problem. Knowing more about prevalence, incidence, and risk factors is important for the development of rational preventive and therapeutic programs. This article attempts to give an overview of studies of the relations between substance abuse, suicidal ideation, suicide, and drug-related death. Research in this field is hampered by the absence of clear definitions, and results of studies are rarely comparable. There is,

This study considers variables that best distinguish among attempters, ideators, and nonsuicidal youth in a sample of 527 homeless and runaway adolescents from four Midwestern states. Univariate results indicate that attempters are significantly more likely than ideators and nonsuicidal youth to have experienced physical or sexual abuse by an adult caretaker, to have experienced sexual victimization while on their own, and to have a friend who attempted suicide. Multivariate analyses reveal five variables that best distinguish among the three groups: self-esteem, depression, physical abuse, se

OBJECTIVE: Involvement of personality traits in susceptibility to suicidality has been the subject of research since the 1950s. Because of the diversity of conceptual and methodological approaches, the extent of their independent contribution has been difficult to establish. Here, we review conceptual background and empirical evidence investigating roles of traits in suicidal behaviors.
METHOD: We selected original studies published in English in MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases, focusing on suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, or suicide completions, and using standardized personality measures

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. The cross-national lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts has been reported to be 9.2%, with rates increasing considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some studies have explored suicidality in Iceland, research on risk factors remains limited. This study addresses this gap in the literature by presenting descriptive statistics on the prevalence of suicidal behaviors and evaluating risk factors to advance knowledge about suicide Iceland. Data were drawn from a random general population sample (n = 1029). Suicidalit

OBJECTIVE: We explored the epidemiological characteristics of suicide attempts and identified suicide trends and associated factors.
METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional, observational, and single-center study included consecutive 412 patients who were admitted to Emergency Department for follow-up and treatment after a suicide attempt between June 2019 and June 2022. We assessed patient demographics, suicidal behavior, previous suicide attempts, psychiatric disorders, drug use, visits to the psychiatry clinic within the past 6 months, the persistence of suicidal ideation, and clinica

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity and aggression have been associated with all forms of suicidal behaviour and linked to theories of suicide capability. There is a need to clarify the role of impulsivity and aggression in the progression from suicidal thoughts to suicide attempts and suicide.
METHOD: In this naturalistic cross-sectional study, suicide ideators (35), low lethal suicide attempters (37), and high lethal suicide attempters (26) were compared with the Columbia-suicide severity rating scale (C-SSRS), Barratt impulsiveness scale (BIS-11), and the Buss & Perry aggression questionnaire (AQ).

BACKGROUND: Although research has identified a wide range of risk factors for suicidal behavior in prisoners, it does not establish who is most likely to act on their suicidal thoughts while incarcerated.
METHODS: Self-report data were collected from a random sample of 1,203 adult men incarcerated across 15 prisons in Belgium, who represent 12% of all male prisoners nationwide.
RESULTS: One-third (33%) of participants reported having suicidal thoughts during their incarceration, of whom 26% attempted suicide in prison (9% of all prisoners). Factors independently associated with suicide attem

BACKGROUND: Adults in their twenties appear to be at high risk for suicidal behaviors (SBs) and there is substantial evidence suggesting that certain personality traits may increase individual vulnerability to suicide.
METHOD: We investigated relationships of personality traits with two SBs in a cohort (n=1140) of 21- to 24-year-old adults, representative of the general population of Quebec. Subjects were assessed using a series of structured diagnostic and personality trait questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify personality trait correlates of sui

To assess relationships of total plasma cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) values to suicide, suicide ideation, and hospitalization for psychiatric disease, we studied 220 children, ages 5 to 18 y, hospitalized with affective, adjustment, disruptive, anxiety, schizophrenic, other, and organic psychiatric disorders. The 135 male and 85 female patients had higher TG values (p = 0.0001 and 0.0003, respectively) and higher Quetelet Indices (p = 0.0001 and 0.003, respectively) than the 732 male and 316 female schoolchild controls; male patients had higher TC values than male controls (p = 0.014

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal ideation (SI) represent significant mental health challenges among university students. In low- and middle-income contexts like Bangladesh, there is limited understanding of how these behaviors differentially affect students with and without mental illness. This study addresses these gaps by investigating the prevalence and risk factors of NSSI and SI, with stratified analyses by mental illness status, to predict these behaviors. This cross-sectional study recruited 1401 university students between December 2024 and January 2025. Data was collected

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) places individuals at risk for suicidality. Inconsistencies regarding the associated features of suicidality and OCD remain.
METHODS: Regression analysis determined the extent to which psychiatric comorbidity, illness severity, OCD symptom dimensions, childhood trauma history, and the Val66Met (rs6265) polymorphism of the brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene predict lifetime suicidal ideation and attempts in adults with OCD.
RESULTS: Among the 496 participants, 51.8% reported suicidal ideation and 16.5% reported ≥1 suicide attempts. Fem

UNLABELLED: Rumination has been shown to be positively associated with suicide ideation. Yet, only few studies have attempted to explain potential mediators of this association. Perceptions of entrapment are a core component of recent psychological models of suicidality and might mediate the relationship between rumination and suicide ideation. Possible mediator effects were investigated in an online sample (n = 142) and a clinical sample (n = 226) of adults receiving outpatient psychotherapy. Results demonstrated that perceptions of entrapment fully mediated the association between ruminative
