Insertion into Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Carbon-Sulfur Moieties Derived from Sulfoxonium Ylides and Elemental Sulfur.

The (3 + 2) cycloaddition of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) with carbon-sulfur 2π components has become an emerging method to rapidly assemble tetrahydrothiophenes. Starting materials donating the carbon-sulfur unit are often isolated from thionation of carbonyls or carboxylic acid derivatives. Herein we report a method for the cycloaddition of DACs with carbon-sulfur moieties presumably formed in situ via β-sulfuration of α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides with elemental sulfur. The insertion occurred without the assistance of Lewis acid, perhaps due to the strongly polarized carbon-sulfur-co…

Sulfur cathode design for high-energy-density metal-sulfur batteries: from liquid to solid electrolyte cells.

Metal-sulfur batteries are attracting broad interest as next-generation energy-storage systems because sulfur offers a high theoretical capacity, low cost, and natural abundance. Among them, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries remain the most extensively studied, while room-temperature sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries are emerging as attractive alternatives for low-cost and large-scale storage. However, their practical implementation remains limited by inefficient sulfur utilization, sluggish redox kinetics, severe interfacial and chemo-mechanical degradation, and the distinct challenges imposed by …

Maximizing elemental sulfur production using an enriched sulfur-oxidizing bacterial consortium in a fed-batch bioreactor.

Biological desulfurization provides a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional physicochemical methods for removing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from industrial gas streams, particularly in medium-scale applications. This study investigates the enrichment and application of an enriched sulfur-oxidizing bacterial (SOB) consortium, isolated from sulfur-rich natural environments in Iran, for the selective biological conversion of sulfide to elemental sulfur in a fed-batch airlift bioreactor. A Central Composite Design-Response Surface Methodology (CCD-RSM) was employed to statisticall…

Determination of sulfur species by cathodic square wave stripping voltammetry; Compounds relevant to natural sulfur mineralization.

The feasibility of rapid analysis of a number of environmentally important sulfur compounds by cathodic square wave stripping voltammetry at a mercury electrode has been investigated. For cysteine/cystine a relatively anodic peak was identified, which is ascribed to the stripping of a mercurous species. The dependence of the peak currents on pH was found to be different for cysteine and cystine. Methionine and thioproline gave similar stripping peaks to those for cysteine. It is proposed that they arise from species deposited by oxidative hydrolysis. A complex ion is proposed to cause the stri…

Investigation of the Solubility of Elemental Sulfur (S) in Sulfur-Containing Natural Gas with Machine Learning Methods.

Some natural gases are toxic because they contain hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The solubility pattern of elemental sulfur (S) in toxic natural gas needs to be studied for environmental protection and life safety. Some methods (e.g., experiments) may pose safety risks. Measuring sulfur solubility using a machine learning (ML) method is fast and accurate. Considering the limited experimental data on sulfur solubility, this study used consensus nested cross-validation (cnCV) to obtain more information. The global search capability and learning efficiency of random forest (RF) and weighted least square…

Formation of microbial inhibitors in steam-explosion pretreatment of softwood impregnated with sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide.

Wood chips of Norway spruce were pretreated by steam explosion at 195-215 °C after impregnation with either sulfuric acid (SA) or sulfur dioxide (SD). The effects of different pretreatment conditions on formation of microbial inhibitors were investigated, and the inhibitory effects on yeast of pretreatment liquids and of specific inhibitors that were found in the pretreatment liquids were elucidated. Whereas the concentrations of most inhibitors increased with increasing pretreatment temperatures, there were exceptions, such as formaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The highest concentration …

The Sulfur Oxygenase Reductase Activity Assay: Catalyzing a Reaction with Elemental Sulfur as Substrate at High Temperatures.

The sulfur oxygenase reductase (SOR) reaction is a dioxygen-dependent disproportionation of elemental sulfur (S0), catalyzed at optimal temperatures between 65 °C and 85 °C. Thiosulfate and sulfite are formed as oxidized products as well hydrogen sulfide as reduced product. External co-factors are not required. Usually, the SOR assay is performed in a milliliter scale in S0-containing Tris-buffer at high temperatures followed by colorimetric product quantification. In order to make the SOR assay more sensitive and better reproducible, several modifications were implemented compared to the orig…

Roles of sulfuric acid in elemental mercury removal by activated carbon and sulfur-impregnated activated carbon.

This work addresses the discrepancy in the literature regarding the effects of sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) on elemental Hg uptake by activated carbon (AC). H(2)SO(4) in AC substantially increased Hg uptake by absorption particularly in the presence of oxygen. Hg uptake increased with acid amount and temperature exceeding 500 mg-Hg/g-AC after 3 days at 200 °C with AC treated with 20% H(2)SO(4). In the absence of other strong oxidizers, oxygen was able to oxidize Hg. Upon oxidation, Hg was more readily soluble in the acid, greatly enhancing its uptake by acid-treated AC. Without O(2), S(VI) in H(2…

On the transformation of sulfur-containing amino acids and peptides to volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the human mouth.

Halitosis is most often caused by oral conditions. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), constituting the major components of oral malodor, are produced by anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria retained mainly in periodontal pockets or on the tongue dorsum. Sulfur-containing amino acids serve as substrate for these bacteria. VSC have also been found to have unfavorable effect on the tissue. The aim of this study was to examine whether normal, healthy individuals with no history of halitosis were able to produce VSC from cysteine, when applied as a mouthrinse. A further aim of the study was to investiga…

Gas chromatographic-sulfur chemiluminescent detector procedures for the simultaneous determination of free forms of volatile sulfur compounds including sulfur dioxide and for the determination of their metal-complexed forms.

Three different procedures for the quantitative assessment of free and metal complexed volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and for the determination of truly free SO2 have been developed, taking advantage of a GC-sulfur chemiluminescent detector system (GC-SCD) with cryotrapping. The inertness of the inlet systems, together with the column used (SPB-1 sulfur) makes it possible to obtain a non-saturated perfectly Gaussian peak for SO2, well resolved from H2S. In the main procedure, the injection of 1 mL of the headspace of a sample prepared in complete anoxia and equilibrated at 30 °C makes it pos…

Sulfur fluoride exchange with carbon pronucleophiles.

Aryl alkyl sulfones are an important class of compounds in drug discovery; thus, new methods toward their synthesis are desirable. A general sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx) method to couple aryl sulfonyl fluorides with alkyl carbon pronucleophiles to make aryl alkyl sulfones is described. The reaction was applied to a diverse set of pronucleophiles, including esters, amides, heteroarenes, nitriles, sulfones, sulfoxides, and sulfonamides, at room temperature under mild conditions. We highlight the application of this transformation in parallel medicinal chemistry for the high-throughput genera…

Lewis Acid-Catalyzed Sulfur Fluoride Exchange.

A new method uses metal Lewis acids as catalysts to convert sulfonyl fluorides, fluorosulfates, and sulfamoyl fluorides with silyl amines into S-N bond-containing compounds via sulfur fluoride exchange. The reaction successfully employs Ca(NTf2)2 as a catalyst to form sulfonamides, sulfamates, and sulfamides using in situ-generated or commercially available silyl amines in 35-99% yields. Other metal Lewis acids are also demonstrated to be catalysts in SuFEx, forming sulfonamides and sulfamates in yields comparable to those of Ca(NTf2)2.

Reactive Sulfur Species in Human Diseases.

Significance: Reactive sulfur species (RSS) have been recently recognized as redox molecules no less important than reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species. They possess regulatory and protective properties and are involved in various metabolic processes, thereby contributing to the maintenance of human health. It has been documented that many disorders, including neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus (DM), and cancer, are related to the disruption of RSS homeostasis. Recent Advances: There is still a growing interest in the role of RSS in human…

Sulfur incorporation into biomolecules: recent advances.

Sulfur is an essential element for a variety of cellular constituents in all living organisms and adds considerable functionality to a wide range of biomolecules. The pathways for incorporating sulfur into central metabolites of the cell such as cysteine, methionine, cystathionine, and homocysteine have long been established. Furthermore, the importance of persulfide intermediates during the biosynthesis of thionucleotide-containing tRNAs, iron-sulfur clusters, thiamin diphosphate, and the molybdenum cofactor are well known. This review briefly surveys these topics while emphasizing more recen…

Sensing free sulfur dioxide in wine.

Sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) is important in the winemaking process as it aids in preventing microbial growth and the oxidation of wine. These processes and others consume the SO(2) over time, resulting in wines with little SO(2) protection. Furthermore, SO(2) and sulfiting agents are known to be allergens to many individuals and for that reason their levels need to be monitored and regulated in final wine products. Many of the current techniques for monitoring SO(2) in wine require the SO(2) to be separated from the wine prior to analysis. This investigation demonstrates a technique capable of meas…

Sulfur mustard-induced ocular surface disorders.

Sulfur mustard is a vesicant agent with severe irritating effects on living tissues, including skin, mucous membranes, eyes, and respiratory tract. The eyes are the most susceptible tissue to mustard gas effects, and varying degrees of ocular involvement are seen in 75% to 90% of exposed individuals. Most cases resolve uneventfully; however, a minority of exposed patients will have a continuous process, which manifests clinically either as a persistent smoldering inflammation (chronic form) or late-onset lesions appearing many years after a variable "silent" period (delayed form). Distinctive …
