Hydrolysis of Sulfur Dioxide in Small Clusters of Sulfuric Acid: Mechanistic and Kinetic Study.

The deposition and hydrolysis reaction of SO2 + H2O in small clusters of sulfuric acid and water are studied by theoretical calculations of the molecular clusters SO2-(H2SO4)n-(H2O)m (m = 1,2; n = 1,2). Sulfuric acid exhibits a dramatic catalytic effect on the hydrolysis reaction of SO2 as it lowers the energy barrier by over 20 kcal/mol. The reaction with monohydrated sulfuric acid (SO2 + H2O + H2SO4 - H2O) has the lowest energy barrier of 3.83 kcal/mol, in which the cluster H2SO4-(H2O)2 forms initially at the entrance channel. The energy barriers for the three hydrolysis reactions are in the

Oxidation damage of sulfur dioxide on testicles of mice.

The effects of sulfur dioxide (SO2) on levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), and the activities of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) were investigated in testicles of Kunming albino male mice. SO2 at different concentrations (22, 56, and 112 mg/m3) was administered to animals of SO2 groups in different exposure chambers for 6 h/day for 7 days, while control groups were exposed to filtered air under the same conditions. Our results show that SO2 caused lipid peroxidation and changes in ant…

Cardiopulmonary responses to inhaled sulfur dioxide in the chicken.

Selected cardiopulmonary variables were measured in anesthetized, male, White Leghorn type chickens before, during, and after 60 min exposure to various inhaled SO2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 5000 ppm. In one series of experiments, birds breathed through their nostrils and mouth; in a second series they breathed through a tracheal cannula. Exposure to 5000 ppm SO2 rapidly caused death in all birds with cannulated tracheae and in 4 of 5 birds with an intact respiratory system; one bird in each series of experiments died when exposed to 1000 ppm. Inhaling 100 ppm SO2 did not alter heart ra

Solubility and reactivity of sulfur dioxide in various oils.

Physical-chemical interactions of SO2 and soluble particulate matter have been documented in the potentiation of acute respiratory effects in animals. The possible role of such interactions between SO2 and oils will be examined similarly. By a simple electrochemical technique, the solubility of SO2 in various oils (including motor oils) could be isolated from the chemical reactions. Except for the medicinal mineral oil, large differences in both solubility and reactivity were found among the oils. In these oils, far more SO2 reacted than dissolved.

Sulfur Dioxide: An Endogenous Protector Against Myocardial Injury.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was previously known as a harmful gas in air pollution. Recently, it was reported that SO2 can be endogenously generated in cardiovascular tissues. Many studies have revealed that endogenous SO2 has important physiological and pathophysiological significance and pharmacological potential. As a novel gasotransmitter, SO2 has important regulatory effects on the heart. It has a dose-dependent negative inotropic effect on cardiac function, in which L-type calcium channels are involved. SO2 can also attenuate myocardial injury caused by various harmful stimuli and play an impor…

Sulfur dioxide resistance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae: beyond SSU1.

Sulfite resistance is an important oenological trait for wine yeasts because this compound is used during winemaking as a microbial inhibitor and antioxidant. The molecular mechanisms by which Saccharomyces cerevisiae responds and tolerates SO2 have been mainly focused on the sulfite efflux pump encoded by SSU1. Different chromosomal rearrangements in the regulatory region of this gene have been correlated with improved sulfite tolerance. However, other molecular factors must contribute to this trait because the SSU1 gene activity does not always fit with sulfite tolerance. An interesting appr

Benzosulfones as photochemically activated sulfur dioxide (SO2) donors.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a gaseous environmental pollutant which is routinely used in industry as a preservative and antimicrobial. Recent data suggests that SO2 may have value as a therapeutic agent. However, due to its gaseous nature, localizing SO2 generation is challenging. Herein, various 1,3-dihydrobenzo[c]thiophene 2,2-dioxides (benzosulfones) were prepared as candidates for photochemically activated sulfur dioxide (SO2) generation. These compounds were found to be stable in buffer but were photolysed upon irradiation with UV light to generate SO2. Our data indicates that photolysis of b…

Sulfur dioxide, a double-faced molecule in mammals.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a common air pollutant and is detrimental to many organs. Its toxic effects including oxidative damage, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage and inflammation have been extensively studied. However, recent studies showed that SO2 can be generated endogenously in mammals. In contrast to the toxic effects of SO2, protective effects have also been found in mammals. Endogenous SO2 has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertension, and anti-atherogenic effects and regulates vascular tone and cardiac function in mammals. SO2 may have a dual role in regulating physiological a…

Reactive collisions of sulfur dioxide with molten carbonates.

Molecular beam scattering experiments are used to investigate reactions of SO(2) at the surface of a molten alkali carbonate eutectic at 683 K. We find that two-thirds of the SO(2) molecules that thermalize at the surface of the melt are converted to gaseous CO(2) via the reaction SO(2)(g) + CO(3)(2-) --> CO(2)(g) + SO(3)(-2). The CO(2) product is formed from SO(2) in less than 10(-6) s, implying that the reaction takes place in a shallow liquid region less than 100 A deep. The reaction probability does not vary between 683 and 883 K, further implying a compensation between decreasing SO(2) re
