Neonatal suppurative parotitis is a rare condition characterized by swelling, pain and erythema over the parotid gland. There may be a purulent exsudate from the Stensen duct. The predominant etiology is Staphylococcus aureus but cases with gram negative bacteria and streptococci have been reported. Most cases are managed conservatively with intravenous antibiotic therapy, and early treatment reduces risks of complications like sepsis and intraglandular abscess. We report two cases of neonatal suppurative parotitis; two 14-days-old males, both with one day history of parotid swelling and eryth

Three cases are reported of pyogenic (non-tuberculous) myositis involving the ilio-psoas and/or iliacus muscles in children presenting to John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, Australia, in a 12-month period. In one, cultures grew Haemophilus influenzae type B and in the other two Staphylococcus aureus was isolated. Biopsy of the abscess cavity from the second child confirmed an antecedent haematoma as the underlying cause. The third had underlying sacroiliac septic arthritis with a history of antecedent trauma. The classification, investigation, and treatment of myositis is discussed.

The parotid is the salivary gland most affected by inflammatory process. The authors reviewed the records of 36 patients with acute suppurative parotitis admitted between July 1996 and June 2002. All patients had unilateral swelling of the cheek that extended to the angle of the jaw; 23 had fever (64%) and 6 diabetes (17%). Even though Staphylococcus aureus is the usual pathogen in acute suppurative parotitis, in the present study, alpha-hemolytic streptococci predominated. Adequate hydration and administration of parenteral antimicrobials are essential managements of suppurative parotitis. In

Upper respiratory tract (viral) infection is the most common predisposing cause of suppurative sinusitis. Acute disease is manifested by pain, nasal discharge, systemic manifestations, and nasal obstruction. In chronic disease (greater than 3 months' duration) nasal airway obstruction and postnasal discharge may be the only symptoms. Diagnosis is made on the basis of the history and physical examination, supported by roentgenographic findings and, if necessary, cultures. Acute infection is treated with antibiotics, decongestants, and analgesics. If medical management fails, surgery is necessar

Suppurative cholangitis in 5 aged cats was characterized clinically by weight loss, depression, dehydration, icterus, and fever. The major abnormal laboratory findings were a severe left shift of WBC and a high, conjugated bilirubin concentration consistent with an inflammatory process and cholestasis. Gross pathologic findings included periductal biliary fibrosis (4 cats), periductal pancreatic fibrosis (2 cats), cholelithiasis (2 cats), deformation of the gallbladder (2 cats), and chronic interstitial pancreatitis (2 cats). Histopathologic findings in all cases were portal hepatic fibrosis,

Two patients had nonaneurysmal suppurative aortitis. In one, the aortic ruptured and the patient died. The second patient had Salmonella sepsis and occlusion of the infrarenal aorta. He was treated with aortic resection and extra-anatomic bypass, but died 20 months later of an unrelated illness. Patients with Salmonella sepsis who are over 50 years of age or who are suspected of having aortic atherosclerosis should be evaluated carefully for aortitis since rupture or aneurysm formation is associated with a dismal prognosis.
