Six patients with arterial occlusions of the legs underwent VRLS: a small incision is made in the flank, the retroperitoneum pushed aside with a 1.5-1-balloon catheter, the lumbar sympathicus endoscopically severed and/or partially excised with video assistance. One year after bilateral lumbar sympathectomy for Raynaud's syndrome, a young woman underwent fascicular biopsy of the sural nerve to help elucidate the cause of lower limb pain. The morphological features, density, and diameter spectrum of unmyelinated fibers were normal. The sympathetic nervous system appears to contribute few, if any, axons to the total population of unmyelinated axons in this cutaneous nerve.

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an uncommon and potentially fatal cardiac channelopathy. Treatment options can be medical with β-blockers or surgical with implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantations and left cardiac sympathetic denervation (LCSD). BACKGROUND: Thoracic sympathetic ablation was introduced over a century ago. While some of the early indications have become obsolete, new ones have emerged. Sympathetic ablation is being still performed for some odd indications thus prompting the present study, which reviews the evidence base for current practice.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis can cause significant professional and social handicaps. Although treatments such as oral medication, botox, and iontophoresis are available, surgical sympathectomy is being increasingly utilized.
METHODS: Between January 1997 and December 2002, 180 patients with palmar, axillary, facial, or plantar hyperhidrosis underwent a thoracoscopic sympathectomy. Surgical technique evolved during our study period and included excision of the sympathetic ganglia at T(2), T(3), or T(4) depending on the location of the sweating using monopolar cautery.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the learning curve of upper dorsal thoracoscopic sympathectomy. From June 1993 to December 1996, we performed 232 sympathectomies on 116 patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis. The T2-T3 ganglia were resected by electrocuting and were removed for histologic examination. The series was divided into two groups of 58 patients each, and operations in each group occurred during a period of 21 months. A 5-year experience of 50 endoscopic transaxillary dorsal sympathectomies is presented. The procedure was successful in either curing or improving the symptoms of hyperhidrosis in the great majority of patients. The commonest side effects were compensatory sweating (75%) and gustatory sweating (48%); despite this, there was an extremely high level of patient satisfaction. Permanent Horner's syndrome did not occur. The procedure is effective, simple, cheap, and requires only an overnight stay; and is recommended as the method of choice for the surgical treatment of upper limb hyperhidrosis.

Noise-induced hearing loss was assessed in unilaterally sympathectomized rats exposed one month to 100 dB Leq(lin) noise. The systolic blood pressure of these animals was in the range of 110-140 mmHg. Auditory sensitivity was determined electrophysiologically by brainstem response audiometry to 1/3-octave filtered clicks. The results showed that the loss of sensitivity was about 10 dB smaller (p less than 0.01) on the sympathectomized side.
