BACKGROUND: Plantarflexion of the first ray is an important component of cavovarus foot deformities, which is thought to be due to the pull of the peroneus longus muscle. We inferred its action by studying its insertion into the peroneus longus tubercle (PLT). Our aim was to determine how PLT orientation and morphology differs in cavovarus feet compared to controls on weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT) imaging.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 30 WBCT scans from patients with cavovarus feet and Charcot-Marie Tooth disease. We compared these to 30 normal feet using previously describ

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a common inherited neurologic disorder, significantly impacts the morphology of foot bones, particularly the talus. The disease has been classified into types based on specific mutations, with the most common being CMT type 1 (CMT1; demyelinating) and CMT type 2 (CMT2; axonal). However, the specific osseous morphologic variations in CMT patients and their major genetic subgroups remain insufficiently understood, posing challenges in clinical management and surgical intervention.
METHODS: This study analyzed talar morphology in individuals with CM

Cavus foot, defined by a high medial arch, alters plantar pressure distribution and gait biomechanics, often leading to increased forefoot and heel loading, joint stiffness, and musculoskeletal complications. However, specific kinematic differences compared to normal feet remain underexplored. This study aims to analyse gait kinematics differences in subjects with cavus foot versus those with normally aligned feet. A case-control study was carried out in 100 subjects (50 with bilateral cavus foot and 50 with neutral foot) using the PODOSmart® system, which consists of one pairs of smart insole

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a progressive inherited neurologic disorder causing muscle weakness and lower extremity deformity. The goal of foot and ankle surgical treatment is to create a stable, plantigrade foot, with the potential elimination of brace-wear for ambulation. The aim of this study was to report baseline CMT patient function and subsequent outcome improvement from surgical treatment, as determined by PROMIS physical function (PF), pain interference (PI), and mental health/depression (D) scores.
METHODS: Retrospective data were collected on consecutive CMT pa

High-arched feet affect approximately 10%-15% of the general population. Although the relationship between plantar pressure and bilateral symmetry is well studied, there is limited evidence regarding the use of Symmetry Index and pressure platforms. The objective of the study is to compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index during gait between subjects with Pes Cavus and subjects with normal feet. The analysis of asymmetric pressure patterns could benefit from studies that compare dynamic foot pressures and Symmetry Index values in subjects with high-arched feet and normal feet. This an

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether Broström with InternalBrace™ augmentation enables patients with structural cavovarus deformity to achieve satisfactory patient-reported outcomes. Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures of physical function (PF) and pain interference (PI) are validated metrics of orthopaedic foot and ankle clinical outcomes. The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) is a validated metric of ankle stability. This study aimed to determine whether augmentation results in better PROMIS and CAIT for patients with deformities compared to non-aug

CAPOS syndrome is an autosomal dominant neurological disorder caused by mutations in the ATP1A3 gene. Initial symptoms, often fever-induced, include recurrent acute ataxic encephalopathy in childhood, featuring cerebellar ataxia, optic atrophy, areflflexia, sensorineural hearing loss, and in some cases, pes cavus. This report details a case of CAPOS syndrome resulting from a maternal ATP1A3 gene mutation. Both the child and her mother exhibited symptoms post-febrile induction, including severe sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, ataxia, areflexia, and decreased vision. Additionally, the pa

INTRODUCTION: Hypomelanosis of Ito was originally described as a purely cutaneous disease. Extracutaneous manifestations were described later, forming a neurocutaneous syndrome including skeletal, muscular, ocular and central nervous system symptoms.Hypomelanosis of Ito is characterized by a depigmentation along the lines of Blaschko on the trunk and extremities in certain patterns. The aim of this article was to report another case and give an overview of the related orthopedic symptoms that have been previously described. It was also our wish to contribute with recommendations for considerati

The cavus foot deformity is an often less understood deformity within the spectrum of foot and ankle conditions. The hallmark concern is the possibility of an underlying neurologic or neuromuscular disorder. Although a proportion of these deformities are idiopathic, a significant majority do correlate with an underlying disorder. The appropriate evaluation of this deformity, in coordination within the multidisciplinary scope of health care, allows for a timely diagnosis and understanding of the patient's condition. We provide an abbreviated survey of possible underlying etiologies for the pati

CONTEXT: Arch height is one important aspect of foot posture. An estimated 20% of the population has pes planus and 20% has pes cavus. These abnormal foot postures can alter lower extremity kinematics and plantar loading and contribute to injury risk. Ankle bracing is commonly used in sport to prevent these injuries, but no researchers have examined the effects of ankle bracing on plantar loading.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of ankle braces on plantar loading during athletic tasks.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Laboratory.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 36 part

BACKGROUND: Variations in foot posture, such as pes planus (low medial longitudinal arch) or pes cavus (high medial longitudinal arch) are associated with some lower limb injuries. However, the mechanism that links foot posture to injury is not clear. Research question The aim of this study was to compare plantar pressure between healthy individuals with normal, planus or cavus feet.
METHODS: Ninety-two healthy volunteers (aged 18 to 45) were classified as either normal (n = 35), pes planus (n = 31) or pes cavus (n = 26) based on the Foot Posture Index, Arch Index and normalised navicular hei

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a hereditary peripheral neuropathy leading to neuromuscular impairments, muscle atrophy, and functional limitations. Currently, no specific treatment exists to restore muscle strength in patients with CMT, and the disease can be severely disabling. Surgical correction of cavus foot has been suggested as a potential intervention to alleviate pain and improve gait in selected patients. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects and analyze the subsequent improvement in quality of life. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 45 patients (57 feet)

BACKGROUND: Chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI), frequently resulting from ankle sprains, is often associated with undiagnosed hindfoot varus deformities, specifically subtle cavus foot (SCF). While ligament reconstruction remains the standard treatment for CLAI with SCF, there is ongoing debate regarding the need for adjunctive calcaneal osteotomy to correct the underlying malalignment. Our study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and necessity of minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy combined with arthroscopic modified Broström procedure in patients with CLAI with SCF.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a common cause of cavovarus foot deformity in children. This deformity is often quoted as being forefoot driven, with a primary deformity of first ray plantarflexion driving the hindfoot into varus by virtue of the tripod effect of the foot, which was hypothesized by Coleman and is commonly assessed clinically using his eponymous block test. The primary goal of this study was to objectively investigate this hypothesis using dynamic pedobarography.
METHODS: A review of the gait lab archives at a large tertiary referral center was carried out to

BACKGROUND: Cavus foot is a deformity represented by an increased and rigid medial longitudinal arch, and it is often associated with persistent pain and gait disturbances. None of the conservative conventional treatments for cavus foot have shown conclusive evidence of effectiveness, and so further is research needed to understand how to manage this condition better. This study aimed to assess the immediate and short-term radiological changes after combining static stretching and transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the plantar fascia in adults with idiopathic cavus foot.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), also known as clubfoot, is a common musculoskeletal entity that affects one to two per 1000 live births worldwide. Imaging modalities including radiography, US, and MRI have emerged as valuable tools for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of CTEV. The deformity is characterized by midfoot cavus, forefoot adductus, and hindfoot varus and equinus. The Ponseti method of manipulation and serial casting is the standard treatment of CTEV. Radiography shows the anatomy, position, and relationships of the different bones of the foot. US allows accurate asse
