BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) is dependent upon accurate preoperative parathyroid localization. We hypothesized that surgeon recognition of subtle differences in radiotracer accumulation would increase the sensitivity of technetium-99m sestamibi imaging and result in more frequent use of MIP.

Study of the labeling of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria with technetium-99m (99mTc) at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 37 degrees C shows that the incorporation of radioactivity in this cercaria increases with the increase in stannous chloride concentration, reaching a constant value threshold at 130.00 microM. Monoclonal antibodies can be labelled with technetium-99m by prereduction of the antibody with 2-mercaptoethanol, then reduction of pertechnetate with an aliquot of a stannous kit, resulting in greater than 97% labelling without the need for further purification. The diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia is one that is often made on the basis of biopsy findings and routine radiographs of involved areas. Until the advent of total body scanning, early cases of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia went undiagnosed until swelling, asymmetry, or deformity was noticed in other body parts. More sensitive radiographic techniques, (this is, bone imaging) are now available which offer a means for early detection of polyostotic involvement and more accurate delineation of lesions of the monostotic variety.

Personal experience with technetium99m pertecnetate scanning in the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is reported. The data reported indicate that the scan can be considered positive when the lower right quadrant of the abdomen shows a definite accumulation of radioactivity.
