Electromagnetic Field Exposure Changes Due to the Digital Television Switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece.

In the present work, the changes in the exposure to electromagnetic fields due to television signals incurred by the digital switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece, are investigated. It is shown that the measured electric fields comply with ICNIRP guidelines but are higher than those in the reported literature for other countries. However, this may be attributed to the selection of measurement points. Moreover, it is shown that the median value of the power density dropped from 60 μW m during analog broadcasting to 13.3 μW m for digital television. This finding indicates that the digital switchove…

Television advertisements for high-sugar foods and beverages: effect on children's snack food intake.

Energy-dense food advertising affects children's eating behaviour. However, the impact of high-sugar food advertising specifically on the intake of sweet foods is underexplored. This study sought to determine whether children would increase their intake of sugar and total energy following high-sugar food advertising (relative to toy advertising) and whether dental health, weight status and socio-economic status (SES) would moderate any effect. In a crossover, randomised controlled trial, 101 UK children (forty male) aged 8-10 years were exposed to high-sugar food/beverage and toy advertisement

Discordance Between Patient Reported Motivations to Seek Treatment for Psoriasis Compared to Television Advertisements.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a growing arsenal of therapies for psoriasis and, consequently, an increasing number of advertisements for these treatments, many psoriasis patients still remain untreated. While the primary treatment seeking motivations for these patients have been identified, it is unknown if the commercials for the medications designed to encourage patient engagement in treatment are relevant to these concerns. METHODS: Online databases for national television advertisements were searched for psoriasis treatment commercials broadcast between 2000 and 2018. Each advertisement video was…

Television viewing time among statin users and non-users. The Polish Norwegian Study (PONS).

Sedentary behavior has emerged as an independent cardiovascular disease risk factor. Uncertainty exists about the behaviors of statin users, who may exhibit either a healthy adherer or a false reassurance effect. We conducted this study in order to assess and compare TV viewing among statin users and nonusers. We used data from a cross-sectional study of 12,754 participants, from south-east Poland, age 45 to 64 years in 2010-11. Statin use during last 30 days was recorded by trained nurses. Participants reported time spent viewing TV/week. There were 1728 (13.5%) statin users of which 628 (36.

Coccidioidomycosis among cast and crew members at an outdoor television filming event--California, 2012.

In March 2013, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified two Doctor's First Reports of Occupational Injury or Illness (DFRs) regarding Los Angeles County residents who had worked at the same jobsite in January 2012 and had been evaluated for possible work-associated coccidioidomycosis (valley fever). Occupational exposure to Coccidioides, the causative fungi, typically is associated with soil-disrupting activities. The physicians noted that both workers were cast or crew members filming a television series episode, and the site of possible exposure was an outdoor set in Vent…

An eye tracking examination of fantasy television's immediate influence on children's executive functions.

Several studies have investigated the immediate impact of viewing fantastical television (TV) programs on children's cognitive function; however, the results have been inconsistent. This study experimentally investigates the immediate impact of TV content (high fantasy vs. low fantasy) on the executive functions (EFs), specifically visual attention and inhibitory control, of 65 children aged 5-7. Children were randomly assigned to view either high fantasy (HF) or low fantasy (LF) programs, and their EFs were assessed with eye-tracking pro/anti-saccade tasks before and after viewing the program…

"That's not a beer bong, it's a breast pump!" representations of breastfeeding in prime-time fictional television.

Breastfeeding has been recognized as one of the key determinant in one's future health. Yet although most people are aware of the benefits, many women do not breastfeed their babies past the first few months. These low rates can be partially explained by negative cultural attitudes toward breastfeeding, which have been reinforced by media messages. This research explored representations of breastfeeding in entertainment media-an area that has been overlooked. A textual analysis was conducted on 53 fictional television breastfeeding representations, ranging in genre and audience, from Beavis an…

Are sedentary television watching and computer use behaviors associated with anxiety and depressive disorders?

Sedentary behaviors may be more common among persons with mental disorders and thereby result in poorer health outcomes. This study examined whether independently of general physical activity level, mental disorders are linked to two important examples of sedentary behavior: computer use and watching television. We used cross-sectional data from The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Our study sample consisted of 2353 participants (age 18-65) of whom 1701 had a current anxiety and/or depressive diagnosis and 652 were healthy controls. Anxiety and depression diagnoses were con…

Is television traumatic? Dreams, stress, and media exposure in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were traumatic for people living throughout the United States. It has been suggested that people living far from the attacks experienced increased stress because of their exposure to the terrorist events via the media, particularly via television. Following a traumatic or stressful event, individuals may have dreams that reflect that experience. As part of a course on dreaming, individuals recorded their dreams both prior to and following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. On September 12, these same individuals reported their activities a…

Alcohol Advertising Across Spanish and English Television and Radio Networks in New York City.

Latinx residents in New York City experience greater disparities in alcohol use behaviors, chronic liver disease mortality, and other health and legal consequences from high-risk alcohol use compared to non-Latinx White residents. As media-based advertising of alcohol can influence health behaviors, this study aimed to take an "upstream" approach by analyzing rates of alcohol advertising across primetime English- and Spanish-language television networks and radio station broadcasting in New York City during September 7-27, 2022. A systematic content analysis of a randomly drawn, two-week compo…
