Rapid Access From Primary Care to a Multidisciplinary Clinic at Tertiary Care Improves Clinical Outcomes for Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Results From Diabetic Foot in Primary and Tertiary (DEFINITE) Care's Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention Program (LEAPP) Clinic.

Diabetic Foot in Primary and Tertiary (DEFINITE) Care is an inter-institutional, multidisciplinary team (MDT) program for patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) within a healthcare cluster in Singapore. This is one of our subgroup analyses within DEFINITE Care, assessing clinical outcomes of lower extremity amputation prevention program (LEAPP), a multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic, and non-LEAPP patients within the program. From June 2020 to June 2022, 2798 patients within the DEFINITE cohort completed a minimum of 12-month follow up. Of these patients, 20.6% were managed by LEAPP, wher

The Consistency of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Prevention Definitions in the Context of Musculoskeletal Sports Injuries: A Rapid Review and Critical Exploration of Common Terms of Usage.

BACKGROUND: Formal statements articulating the meaning of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention concepts are commonly used in the musculoskeletal sports injuries literature, but appear to be employed inconsistently and incorrectly. Standard definitions, appropriate to athletic health and performance practice, are required to systematically develop the state-of-the-art. To accomplish this, we summarized prevention definitions with the aim of improving conceptual clarity across the musculoskeletal sports injuries literature. MAIN BODY: We used a rapid literature review method, searching Sc…

High Burden of Adverse Drug Reactions to Isoniazid Preventive Therapy in People Living With HIV at 3 Tertiary Hospitals in Uganda: Associated Factors.

BACKGROUND: HIV is one of the most important risk factors of tuberculosis (TB)-related morbidity and mortality. Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) is recommended to prevent latent TB reactivation in patients with HIV. However, due to multiple therapies and comorbidities, these patients are predisposed to adverse drug reactions (ADRs) that lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of suspected IPT-linked ADRs in HIV-positive patients using IPT. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and March

External validation of the risk assessment model of the International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE) for medical patients in a tertiary health system.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized medical patients are at risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Universal application of pharmacological thromboprophylaxis has the potential to place a large number of patients at increased bleeding risk. In this study, we aimed to externally validate the International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE) VTE risk assessment model in a hospitalized general medical population. METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified medical discharges that met the IMPROVE protocol. Cases were defined as hospital-acquired VTE and confirmed by diagnostic study withi

Evaluation of the level of awareness of the role of folic acid in the prevention of neural tube defects amongst women of reproductive age in a tertiary health institution.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects are major cause of infant mortality and disability. Their occurrence has been linked to folate deficiency during pregnancy. Periconceptional use of folate has been shown to significantly reduce their incidence. Awareness of this relationship is key to adopting appropriate measures to prevent them. This study was carried out to assess the level of this awareness among reproductive-age female employees in a tertiary hospital. METHODOLOGY: Questionnaires designed to assess respondents' knowledge about neural tube defects and folic acid were completed by women of c
