Test Anxiety Among College Students With Specific Reading Disability (Dyslexia): Nonverbal Ability and Working Memory as Predictors.

Test anxiety and its correlates were examined with college students with and without specific reading disability (RD; n = 50 in each group). Results indicated that college students with RD reported higher test anxiety than did those without RD, and the magnitude of these differences was in the medium range on two test anxiety scales. Relative to college students without RD, up to 5 times as many college students with RD reported clinically significant test anxiety. College students with RD reported significantly higher cognitively based test anxiety than physically based test anxiety. Reading

The relationship between academic self-efficacy and test anxiety: a meta-analysis of Chinese secondary school students.

Existing empirical studies report inconsistent correlation coefficients, ranging from -0.105 to -0.792, for the association between academic self-efficacy and test anxiety among Chinese secondary school students. Although evidence indicates that academic self-efficacy predicts test anxiety more strongly than domain-general self-efficacy (global confidence across all life domains), most prior meta-analyses have focused on the latter rather than on academic self-efficacy (perceived competence in specific academic domains). Furthermore, few quantitative meta-analyses have systematically decompose

High definition tDCS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex modulates nonlinear HRV in high test anxiety individuals.

Prior neurostimulation research has underscored the importance of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the modulation of autonomic nervous system responses, with activation of this region significantly enhancing heart rate variability (HRV) - a key indicator of autonomic flexibility. High test anxiety (HTA) individuals often demonstrate diminished HRV in evaluative scenarios, signalling reduced physiological adaptability to stress. This study investigates the effects of offline high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeting the left DLPFC on nonlinear

Sex, drugs, and zebrafish: Acute exposure to anxiety-modulating compounds in a modified novel tank dive test.

This study investigated the effects of anxiogenic and anxiolytic drugs on zebrafish (Danio rerio) behaviour using a modified novel tank dive test with higher walls and a narrower depth. Zebrafish were administered chondroitin sulfate, beta-carboline, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), ethanol, and beta-caryophyllene, and their behaviours were evaluated for geotaxis, swimming velocity, and immobility. Both anxiogenic and anxiolytic compounds generally increased bottom-dwelling behaviour, suggesting that the tank's modified dimensions significantly influence zebrafish responses. EC50 values for

PLDT (planarian light/dark test): an invertebrate assay to quantify defensive responding and study anxiety-like effects.

BACKGROUND: Planarians, like rodents, instinctively spend more time in dark versus light environments when given a choice. This behavioral phenomenon is called negative phototaxis, which may reflect defensive responding related to an anxiety-like phenotype. NEW METHOD: We propose a planarian light/dark test, designated PLDT, to predict anxiogenic- or anxiolytic-like effects. Experimentally, we placed a planarian at the midline of a Petri dish, containing test compound or water, that was split evenly into light and dark compartments and determined time spent in the light over 10min. RESULTS:

Effects of cognitive behavioral therapy with relaxation vs. imagery rescripting on test anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety is a common condition in students, which may lead to impaired academic performance as well as to distress. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two cognitive-behavioral interventions designed to reduce test anxiety. Test anxiety in the participants was diagnosed as social or specific phobia according to DSM-IV. Subsequently subjects were randomized to three groups: a moderated self-help group, which served as a control group, and two treatment groups, where either relaxation techniques or imagery rescripting were applied. METHODS: S

Testing the potential therapeutic effects of an online creative arts-based intervention for people with anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Creative arts-based interventions are a relatively new addition to the toolkit of psychological treatments for mental afflictions. As such, the therapeutic efficacy of these therapies when conducted remotely via digital media has been under-researched. To address this gap, this study tested the effects of an online creative arts-based intervention to alleviate anxiety. METHOD: A repeated measures quasi-experimental design was employed on a sample of British adults (N = 41). Data were collected using pre- and post-intervention scores on the General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) and Warw

Intentional and automatic processing of numerical information in mathematical anxiety: testing the influence of emotional priming.

Current theoretical approaches suggest that mathematical anxiety (MA) manifests itself as a weakness in quantity manipulations. This study is the first to examine automatic versus intentional processing of numerical information using the numerical Stroop paradigm in participants with high MA. To manipulate anxiety levels, we combined the numerical Stroop task with an affective priming paradigm. We took a group of college students with high MA and compared their performance to a group of participants with low MA. Under low anxiety conditions (neutral priming), participants with high MA showed r

Cannabinoids & Stress: impact of HU-210 on behavioral tests of anxiety in acutely stressed mice.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent classes of mental disorders affecting the general population, but current treatment strategies are restricted by their limited efficacy and side effect profiles. Although the cannabinoid system is speculated to be a key player in the modulation of stress responses and emotionality, the vast majority of current research initiatives had not incorporated stress exposure into their experimental designs. This study was the first to investigate the impact of exogenous cannabinoid administration in an acutely stressed mouse model, where CD1 mice were pr

A test of anxiety that distinguishes between the actions of benzodiazepines and those of other minor tranquilisers and of stimulants.

The effects of minor tranquilisers and of stimulant drugs were studied in the Social Interaction test of anxiety in which the illuminance and unfamiliarity of the test arena are manipulated. Acute administration of sodium phenobarbitone (25 mg/kg) was without effect. Acute administration of sodium phenobarbitone (35 mg/kg) and of meprobamate (60 mg/kg) produced sedation: both locomotor activity and social interaction were reduced. On the other hand, amphetamine sulphate (2 mg/kg) and caffeine citrate (20 mg/kg) reduced social interaction, but increased locomotor activity. Chronic administratio

Distinct Illness Representation Profiles Are Associated With Anxiety in Women Testing Positive for Human Papillomavirus.

BACKGROUND: Testing positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) at cervical cancer screening has been associated with heightened anxiety. To date, the cognitive determinants of heightened anxiety remain unclear, making it difficult to design effective interventions. PURPOSE: This study investigated latent illness representation profiles in women testing positive for HPV with no abnormal cells (normal cytology) and explored associations between these profiles and anxiety. METHODS: Women aged 24-66 (n = 646) who had tested HPV-positive with normal cytology at routine HPV primary screening in Engla

Hostility, aggression, and anxiety levels of divorce and nondivorce children as manifested in their responses to projective tests.

The effects of parental divorce on the levels of aggression, hostility, and anxiety in children, as measured by the Rorschach test, together with the type and direction of aggression, as measured by the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration (P-F) Study, were studied. The Rorschach and the Rosenzweig P-F study were administered to a nonclinical sample of 108 Swedish children ranging in age from 10 to 12 years old. The subjects constituted a divorce and a nondivorce group of 27 girls and 27 boys each. Children of divorced parents (hereafter referred to as divorce children, divorce boys, or divorce girl

COPD Assessment Test as a Screening Tool for Anxiety and Depression in Stable COPD Patients: A Feasibility Study.

Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients but are often under-diagnosed. We aimed to assess the suitability of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) in screening anxiety and depression in patients with COPD. Stable COPD patients from a cross-sectional observational study were assessed by CAT. Anxiety and depression were identified using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were used to

Development and psychometric evaluation of a scrambled sentences test specifically for worry in individuals with generalised anxiety disorder.

The tendency to draw negative conclusions from ambiguous information (interpretation bias) is prevalent across emotional disorders and plays a key role in the development and maintenance of pathological worry and anxious mood. Assessing interpretation bias using valid and reliable measures is central to empirical research. A commonly used measure of interpretation bias is the scrambled sentences test (SST), originally relating to depression. Given the association between interpretation bias and worry, we aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate a new version of the SST with items pertain

Pre-test anxiety levels and postoperative pain in non-obstructive azoospermic patients: Is klinefelter syndrome a predisposing factor?

INTRODUCTION: Increased depression and anxiety incidence in infertile individuals treated with assisted reproductive techniques have been shown in studies. Postoperative pain perception after testicular sperm extraction (TESE) is thought to be related to preoperative anxiety in non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with Klinefelter syndrome (KS) and twenty male patients with normal karyotype NOA planned for TESE under local anaesthesia due to azoospermia were included in the study. Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T and STAI-S) inventory was

Refinement of the novel tank diving test: toward standardized and robust analysis of anxiety-like behavior in zebrafish.

The novel tank diving test (NTT) is a widely used behavioral assay for evaluating anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish; however, results often exhibit considerable variability across different experimental settings. In this study, we systematically analyzed various methodological factors influencing the outcomes of NTT and introduced refinements to enhance its reliability and reproducibility. We optimized the detection parameters for region entry and freezing behavior using logistic regression analysis, significantly reducing false-positive classifications caused by tracking artifacts. Anxiety levels and wild running susceptibility in rats: assessment with elevated plus maze test and predator odor exposure.

It is reported in the literature that nearly 20% of rats are susceptible to displays of wild running (WR) behavior when submitted to high intensity acoustic stimulation. Some characteristics of WR suggest that it can be viewed as a panic-like reaction. This work aimed to test whether WR-sensitive rats show higher levels of anxiety in elevated-plus-maze (EPM) and predator-odor exposure paradigms in comparison with WR-resistant ones. Male adult Wistar rats were submitted to two trials of acoustic stimulation (104 dB, 60 s) in order to assess WR susceptibility. Seven WR-sensitive and 15 WR-resist

Cross cultural evaluation of smokers risk for panic and anxiety pathology: a test in a Russian epidemiological sample.

The present study evaluated the main and interactive effects of level of smoking (cigarettes per day) and anxiety sensitivity (fear of anxiety and anxiety related sensations) in predicting panic and anxiety variables in an epidemiologically-defined sample of smokers from Moscow (n=95). The combination of high levels of anxiety sensitivity and smoking predicted agoraphobic avoidance, but not frequency of panic attacks during the past week. These findings suggest anxiety sensitivity may moderate the relation between level of smoking and prototypical panic psychopathology variables (panic attacks

Effects of benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonists in the elevated plus maze test of anxiety in the rat.

The present series of experiments examined the effects of five benzodiazepine receptor (BZR) partial inverse agonists on the behaviour of rats on an elevated plus maze. The drugs were tested in a standard plus maze with 3-cm walls added to the open arms, as this has been shown to increase the sensitivity of the plus maze to anxiogenic-like drugs effects (Jones and Cole 1995). The drugs tested were FG 7142 (0-100 mg/kg), beta-CCE (0-30 mg/kg), ZK 132,556 (0-100 mg/kg), ZK 90 886 (0-30 mg/kg) and Ro 15-4513 (0-30 mg/kg). Body composition, anxiety, and fitness test performance in Chinese college students: biopsychosocial association patterns across gender-differentiated testing contexts.

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological factors jointly relate to physical performance, yet few studies have examined the indirect associations through which body composition and exercise behavior relate to performance via psychological factors. This study examined whether biopsychosocial association patterns with fitness test performance differ across gender-differentiated testing contexts that impose different physical demands, using China's mandatory national fitness testing system as a naturalistic paradigm. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,916 Chinese college student
