The role of thermography in the diagnosis of soft tissue lesions of the shoulder was evaluated by screening 28 patients with unilateral frozen shoulder and 86 patients with unilateral rotator cuff lesions. Index shoulders were then compared with the normal side. Differences in skin temperature distribution were found in 82% of subjects with frozen shoulder, nearly three-quarters of whom had reduced skin temperature. Out of one hundred and sixty-two patients that examined by contact thermography, forty-five cases involving 55 cancers were assessed for malignancy. The sensitivity and the specificity of this method of testing were 81.5% and 83.5%, respectively. False negative cases included early stage, small sized and papillotubular carcinomas. Ninety-seven primary, operable cancer patients were followed after surgery with a median follow-up of 44 months. Thermograms were classified into 3 categories: normal, equivocal and abnormal. There has been no recurrence in patients with normal thermographic pattern. Patients with abnormal thermographic pattern showed poor prognosis: 88% survival and 80% recurrence-free survival rate at 3 years. In 349 patients with clinical diagnosis of cervicobrachial syndrome thermographic examinations were made during 1987 and 1988. Liquid crystal thermography (LCT) for the localization of undescended testicles was performed in 28 patients, in 21 of whom ultrasonography (US) was also performed: Among the 21 operated cases, LCT correctly localized the testicles in 19, and US in 18 cases.
